I'm definitely about as deep as I can go sanding...so I have to take care of this finish now.

I'll get a good UV wax on there and then get it winterized...

Any recommendations for polishing up the rails?

The difference is amazing! You started with 125 grit?  :o

I did...started with 125 Grit on my little weak B&D Mouse sander...light & quick sanded just until it was smooth to the touch.  Didn't take much at all.

Then using my sanding block, 600 Grit, with 600 grit again with my hand to hit any spots the block couldn't get to.

Then 1000 Grit by hand (no block), then 2000 Grit (no block) to get everything to a slight shine...

Then Meguire's OneStep Compound (has a slight fine grit) by hand to get the spots the buffer can't, then with the buffer...

Then Meguire's Polish with the buffer, then a 2nd coat by hand.

My cheap little Harbor Freight buffer smells like the motor is burning up after about 2 mins of work...hoping it makes it through!

The fixed areas look much more gold then copper, it could almost be the CV-27's little brother now.

I think everyone knows (hopefully by now) that I post pictures for my own motivation to keep me moving on my projects...otherwise Goldie wouldn't even have a floor in it yet.

I want to get the dash & control mount wood done over the winter...that's the next project.

Well, just about finished...I've been hesitant to really dig into the engine cover as its definitely the worst.  Before even starting I could already see black through the metalflake, so I knew there wasn't much left.

Think I've got it looking pretty good, but there's still a little 'haze' to some of it.  I also found a spot that didn't fade...so now it looks out of place.  Regardless, its miles and miles better than it used to be!

Looks fantastic!  You and us other Glastron flake nuts will be the only ones who will know it's faded.  Making it shine and making it go has been an enormous project that not that many would have braved.  You've got a unique boat, and you enjoy it! It will always attract attention on the road and on the lake.  It's a Glastron/Carlson!!!!!  And it's YOURS!!!   ;D

Looks great Doran, AND your arms muscles are "buffed up" too, I'll bet!   ;D

Mark - My arms are rubber...but my fingernails has never looked better.

Chris - It looks so much better.  The Yellow is jumping out again, and to have it smooth to the touch is just so nice.

I have a few interior-side small sections to do yet, but its an amazing transformation, couldn't be happier.

Now, just need to finish up, and get the bow trimmed down to fit the cover.  That'll complete my fall goals for this year.

I have a 2nd parts boat located (not the one in KS), so I may have some other goodies for it soon as well.

Looking great! Could you tell me what grit papers you used for the sanding? I wouldn't mind doing mine someday. But the catch is Mine was cleared at one point, so I would have to sand that off first...

Looking excellent Doran! I went through the same thing with my CVX18 a few years back. Lot's of work but worth the effort and very satisfying. Sounds like you got a lead to get the interior finished. It will be a different boat next summer! Now treat yourself after all the hard work you've put into that boat with a couple of new GC emblems on the engine cover. ;)

Yeah, its looking like my lead on the donor boat is drying up.

I've found a lead on yet another CVZ-19 (same colors as goldie) for $150.00...but sounds like its been thoroughly gutted.

Now I want a GMC RV...so there's a problem there.   ;)

I'm also thinking about seeing how close I could get a vinyl wrap to match for the bow cover...

I also meant to say that I was surprised you went as course as 125 grit when you started. It obviously worked and once again I'm amazed at how tough and resilient these finishes are. I've got some belms in the solid color on my boat that I may have to revisit with a much courser grit than I tried the first time.

Good time of the year for donor boats. Something will pop up, they always do!

That was Hotwired's recommendation to knock down the rough finish...so I used my wimpy little Black & Decker 'Mouse' sander...figured I couldn't sand through too much too quickly...and it allowed me to get into angles & corners of the boat.

Once it was no longer rough, I moved up to 600 Grit on a block & by hand...but it was really just to get through the flake that was sticking up through the clear.
