Winterized... :(
« on: September 22, 2012, 08:24:35 PM »
Winterized the boat today.

As a test, I did it my old way:  Bucket with a hose on the bottom, hooked up the muffs (after warming the engine on water) and let the impeller take in 6 gallons of RV antifreeze.

Then...I drained the engine petcocks & exhaust manifolds, here's what I ended up with...after 6 gallons, still diluted pretty good with water.    I couldn't actually see that it was pink until it was in a bucket.  Antifreeze tester said I was good to only  +10 degrees.  Yikes!

So...I then proceeded to fill up the engine (via large water pump hose) with 3 gallons (until full), and filled up each riser...feeling much more confident that I have no worries this winter.

Thought you'd like that test Rich!

That's the only way I do it. I don't bother running the antifreeze through the intake with the engine running. I run it first up to temp, drown it with fogging oil down the carb throat, drain the engine and manifolds completely and then refill them with the pink stuff. It only uses about 3 gallons, no waste.

That's essentially what I did the 2nd time around, engine was up to temp and I fogged the carb and killed the engine as it was sputtering.  I just wanted to see how well the 'easy' way worked.  Answer:  Not very good at all!

It could have only been 3 Gal's total...I lost track of my usage when I did it the proper way.  I think it was 2 1/2 in the engine and another gallon between the manifolds.  It was something like that...and honestly not any harder than doing it the 'easy' way either.

That's the way my merc manual I got with my boat says to do, I've been doing it that way since I bought it.

Sometimes its good to own an outboard!!!

Change the lower unit oil, fog the carbs and cylinders, add new plugs, put a can of sta-bil in, pull the prop, plug-
in the trickle charger... I got it down to about about an hour now...

How did you fill the risers...thru the hose?
When you filled the block thru the large hose, are you pouring into the T-stat housing or down into the pump?
I'm just a bit paranoid about getting it into the cylinders since I think thats what I did when I was running the old engine on a garden hose.
Obviously, the exhausts gasses and water meet at some point (in the risers)when its running.

To fill the engine pull the large hose off the T-stat housing, the one that leads to the water circulator, fill the pink stuff into the hose until it comes back out of the T-stat housing - block is full.

Pull the smaller hoses off the T-stat housing that lead to the exhaust manifolds and fill them with pink stuff, when full you should see some trickle out the exhaust outside the boat.

What about the hose that goes to the risers? Just fill the manifold ones only? I know your entire process is saved here somewhere (archived) and I plan on looking for it. So no chance of it back tracking into the heads?

If you have separate hoses for the risers you can fill through those too. The important part is making sure everything is drained before you add the pink stuff. It shouldn't get back into the engine as long as the gaskets between risers and manifolds are good, it should flow down the exhaust pipes behind the engine.
