140 torque specs
« on: October 21, 2014, 09:55:21 PM »
Jason pulled the 140 out of  V174 because I had a slight rod knock.
Inspection found wear in #3 rod bearing.
I will be installing new rod & main bearings and wondering if anyone knows the torque specs?

Thanks,
Jim

Clymer Mercruiser Stern Drive Shop Manual

1964-1985 ( also includes 1986-1987 TR and TRS models)

Connecting rod cap nuts 11/32-24 33 ft.lb.
                                     3/8-24    40 ft.lb.

Main bearing caps                          65 ft.lb.

Brandon has the same book that i got these specs from, and I suggest if he doesn't mind looking them up to confirm...:)

sorry to hear about the rod:(

Check the crank! Mic it to make sure it's round or you will be doing it all over.

Jim - I helped my buddy pull the 3.0 out of his Maxum that had spun a main bearing & he ended up buying a new/reconditioned crank with a matched set of bearings. I remember he got it at a pretty reasonable price. That was over 10 years ago but it is something you could check in to.

Update;

Installed new main & rod bearings. Hooked-up water & test ran engine about 10 minutes.
Checked oil & found water contamination. Engine was in my heated garage all winter so could not have froze. Pressure test found 150 PSI in all cyls, head should be good.
Removed manifold & riser, disassembled & had pressure tested.
Shop said both good but maybe a gasket problem between them. Installed new gaskets, new oil & filter & test ran.
Every thing OK now. Jason installed engine & outdrive yesterday.

Hooked up muffs to test before splash.
Everything OK except engine dies when shifted into reverse.
I know there is a cable adjustment to solve this but I forgot

The shift cable can be adjusted if the cable is trying to pull beyond its travel limit, however more often than not it could be you need to replace the lower shift cable - the one that goes from the shift interrupt plate to the drive.

Below are pics for adjustment, the first is my interpretation for MR/R/Alpha but can probably be adapted to earlier versions. The second from Mercstuff.com in a less simplified version.

Update!

A day on the lake found engine not running very well, kills at idle and top RPM around 3200.
I pulled the valve cover and thought I did enough homework to adjust the valves - WRONG!
After adjusting valves it ran very rough - what now!
Joe, (the duceman) offered to look it over & see what I missed.
He found poor compression and a couple valves not closing all the way.
I guess I didn't have the lifters primed when I tried to adjust valves.
Hoping to get it in the water this week - wish me luck!

THANKS JOE
