1900 powersteering pump install
« on: June 14, 2016, 09:19:43 PM »
i have been working at getting this PS pump installed on and off (mostly off) for several weeks.
well its finally on and working, why did it take so long you ask.
motor is a mid 70's 188 (302 ford V8) i have not found PS pump made for this application.
pump is from an early 70's 215E (also a 302 ford V8), which also had a belt driven raw water pump so the PS pump was on the 4th pulley and would not go on my 188 the way its fit in the 1900.
part of this process included cleaning up all the pulleys as they were pitted from rust and would eat belts at an amazing rate. i used emery cloth and a portion of the old belt to clean them up, did the crank and water pump pulleys on the lathe at work, used a drill with a hex bit to turn the alt and PS pump.
fabricated some brackets to hold the pump up high on the port side and run on the second pulley.
also removed the mechanical fuel pump and moved the fuel filter out for clearance.
i was going to install the Mr Gasket elec pump i got last year but when i tried to pull the hose off the outlet the barb fitting it pulled out of the housing :(
so i ordered a Airtex pump with a USCG rating and installed that with an oil pressure cut out switch and a liquid filled fuel pr guage.
all seems to work great.
also had the chance to check on stuff i neglected to do last year, went to change plugs but they looked new so i put them back in.
checked compression, that was all good.
had some over sized 1/8" npt pipe plugs made for the manifolds and risers cuz the threads were warn out
hope the rain quits so i have a chance to test it before Saturday.

Looks like it should work nicely.  I'm envious of the access you have to get to the front of the engine, seems I have to tear out most of the back seat.
