Friends Engine Block , Not Glastron
« on: July 13, 2018, 11:22:51 AM »
My friend said his 5.7 Indmar from his 1992 ski boat came up overheating with cooling component failures and cracked block.  I said he should have the frost plugs checked for freeze, like it did not get winterized, because cracked blocks come from Ice, not heat.  And the other damaged components in the cooling system the damage could have originated with a freeze.   Am I on the right track with that thinking?

What is best way to determine if it was not properly winterized by the dealer, and if he has a claim?

I think you’re on the right track, over heating would not crack the block.

Yes, but a lot of times the frost plugs don't pop or only come out a little bit. I look for rust lines from cracks or better yet, hook up a hose and fire it up to look for leaks.

Overheating can cause a number of issues, but cracked block is generally not one of them.  It appears the owner wants to put this issue on the shop that winterized it.  Do your research, have all the service records extending several years back.  It will be difficult to determine when and how the block got cracked.   Most importantly, be nice with the shop.  Not to say an issue like this won't end in a court battle, maybe they will work with you to correct the problem.   If you walk in kicking and screaming, your not going to get far.

I think he has been using them for many years.  They are reputable.  Thanks for the advise, and seems thee consensus is that heat usually does not crack blocks.   In Minnesota, that probably means it froze.

Where is the block cracked? Are the cylinder heads or manifolds cracked?

Yes, but a lot of times the frost plugs don't pop or only come out a little bit.

The term "frost plug" is incorrect and misleading.   These plugs purpose is to hold the sand casting cores in place to form the water jackets during the casting process, and to allow the removal of the cores from the casting.

He will provide more detail on what cracks and where they are, soon.  Boat is up north, he does not get there every week. Thanks for following this story.
