Title: Anyone running 70-80hp motor on a CVX16?
Post by: Buckey on January 17, 2021, 12:11:19 PM
I picked up a CVX-16 recently as an upgrade from a GT150 I have now.  I have a 1980 75 Evinrude (49ci) on the GT-150 and get a top speed of 41mph with a comfortable cruising speed of 34-35 (with 19p prop).  The GT is I think 625lbs and the CVX is around 100lbs more I believe.  Until I find something else, I'm going to bolt the 75 to the CVX and wondered if anyone else has run this combination, and if so what is it like?  Thank you

Awesome stuff, thank you, exactly what I was looking for and more.  The 75 there identical to mine. :)

Looks like the 75 oddly enough might be a good fit for the CVX16.  The reviews were reporting 41mph top speed with 4gph at cruising speed (29-30) with both the 70 and 75 around the same.  They ran the 17p on the 70 and a 19p prop on the 75.  No problem at all pulling a skier which was a surprise.  I'm glad that material was passed along to me, much appreciated.  I thought I was going to have to move up to a 115 or so for this boat.

Now what I might do is invest in a decent prop for the 75.

I had a 1972 V156 with a 1994 60 HP Johnson .. would do about 40 to 42 MPH / GPS.
The V156 had a pad and was about same weight as your CVX.
I was running a 17P aluminum OMC prop.
I tried a 17P stainless steel OMC prop and didn't get any performance improvement so used the aluminum.

Impressive, and with a 60hp.  That 60 mind you would have been rated at the prop, correct?  My old motor was 75 at the crank I think.  Thanks for the feedback on the props as well.

Correct .. prop rated.
Not sure when they changed rating or when they went to 56 ci motors.
The 1983 brochure lists the 70 / 75 as 49 ci and 1986 brochure lists 70 as 56 ci.

Evinrude Owners Manuals & brochures ..

It was in very nice shape  .. Guy I sold it to back in 2011,  sent me pictures of it this summer.
He has taken good care of it ..

On a 80 mile river run the V156 / 60 HP would use about 9 gal. of fuel.
My CV16 / 115 HP uses over 18 gal. on same run ..

Actually, my preference would be that boat as it would fit my need more than the ski boat.  The open bow is perfect for the kids/extra passengers.

And the fuel efficiency makes a difference for sure which is why I'm jazzed now to see this material on the 75 being on the CVX.

Can you post some pictures of your CVX ?
Are you in Minnesota ?

Hi, actually, the boats I have are Glastron replicas.  For purposes of posting on forums to gather information I specify the Glastron equivalent because nobody knows what I'm talking about when I name my boats.  So I have a 1980 Vanguard 'Banshee' which is a copy of the GT150.  And, now I have a DeltaCraft 170 XLT which copies the hull of the CVX exactly.  I'll be moving the 75 over from the Banshee to the 170.  I hope by coming clean I won't have to leave the site :)

And, I'm actually in Canada, I grew up on Lake of the Woods Ontario, across from Minnesota, and did lots of boating/fishing/Guiding there.  This is not a very good pic but of coarse its the 170 XLT.  Fairly solid, needs some seat work.  I'll have to see if I can find a pic of the Banshee.  The Banshee has a split windshield which you never see.  In that boat I did the stringers and floor.

For the 170 I can buy the Mariner, it has good compression but other than that I wouldn't know what I'm getting into, and I'm way more familiar with OMC.

Not a Glastron .. Oh Oh .. LOL
Don't worry .. your welcome here ..

WOW .. That's an almost direct copy of a CVX.
I have seen a splash from Canada, I think it was a "Swiftsure" or something like that, but stern was different without cut outs for step on stern. There was another brand also .. but can't remember there name.

Even the seats look like late 70's Glastron / Carlson's.
You could sell the ladder and retire and live like a millionaire ... everyone wants one !

Is there a HIN on the right side of stern, just under rub rail ?
Could you post it ?

I know there was at least four company's making GT150 splash's in Canada.

I think Vanguard copied the CVX hull as well, and called it 'Phantom'.
There is a number on the right side of the stern but I don't have the boat here, its still at the marina where I bought it.  Yeah, this one is an exact copy of the CVX hull, even has the little indentation on each side about a 1/3 of the way up from the back of the boat.

The one thing it doesn't have is the aluminum supports on each side of the windshield.  I'd like to add those on, but they aren't cheap.

Hey, I wonder what the chances are of the foam under the floor being dry?

Here is a part pic of the Banshee with the 75.

I'm surprised you found these pics, there aren't many out there for the DeltaCraft.  Your right, the deck doesn't have the nice CVX scoop and the dash is plane jane, they could have spruced that up.

I like the checkered flag decals on mine, there in good shape.  Gelcoat/metal flake will need a light sanding and buff.  I'm impressed with the article on the 75 pushing this same boat, and getting the 41mph with excellent fuel econony.  I likely will buy the 115 Mariner though.  Its a 1982 which would have been when they started reporting HP at the prop.  But again, I'm not sure what I'd be getting into with it.

I look thru my "Boat Mfg. Codes" and didn't find any DeltaCraft listed .. or the ZLE code ?
But remember I also couldn't find the Swiftsure code ..

Will be interesting to see how they built your boat, some early CVX's had fuel tank running front to back and newer versions running side to side. Not sure but I've been told that older versions had a small piece of transom wood and latter versions had full width wood that was tabbed and glassed better.

My foam under floor and in stern boxes was dry, but wood floor under splash well, even though coated with resin, was rotted and transom wood behind left side was so bad (rotted) that I removed it with my fingers.

The mileage we get on the river run was 50% cruising (30 to 40 mph) 35% full or almost full throttle and 15% no wake / idling.
If you were pulling kids around on a tube all day at 30 mph you would most likely get much better MPG.

1982 was first year for prop rated 115 HP Merc / Mariner's and with some set up and prop testing get you mid 50's pretty easily.
I'm getting 53 to 54 MPH / GPS with my CV16 / 1989 115 HP Mariner and Dave's get a few mph more with his CVX16 / Johnson 115 HP.

Your bolt hole's in transom will be different from the Mariner to the 75 HP OMC motor.

This build still has some pictures ..

Thanks for all the great info.
Ah, so you have a 115 Mariner.  I'll have to learn about some of the things to look out for when I go to pick up the motor.  As far as the boat goes, there is a bit of floor under the splash well that's showing a bit of rot.  The foam boxes are both split, meaning maybe they soaked up some water at some point.  Oh, and here's another thing, I need to repair the transom on both sides as the owner that consigned it, at the marina its at now, brought it there with no suspension on the trailer, and no transom saver on the motor/leg so that was enough to crack the transom on both sides.  Hull is all good though, not a scratch, and no stress cracking.  I'm ok doing the transom repair.

I wonder why the 115 is getting more top end than your Mariner?
The trim on my 75 leaks down so I'm fixing that, how do you find the quality of the trim on the Mariner?
I'll check next time I'm out there and take some pics of the transom and gas tank.

I was looking at your reply again, and noticed the link to a restore thread.  Wow, someone did a great job on that restoration, nice boat.  I like the triangular supports back to the transom.  And air chisel, great idea.  Any boat this old I suppose is going to need some attention, I'm hoping I can avoid extensive restoration though.  I didn't go to the extent like this when I did the Banshee, but I remember it was a dirty job, very important to be prepared with all the right gear for the job.

From the picture you posted your Mariner has old style tilt and trim with external trim rams. But according to chart I posted it is a ADI ignition system.
My Mariner is first year for the four cylinder 2+2 115 HP motor ( same motor as 100 HP pictured below )  and has internal three ram system.
After the 100 & 115 HP Merc's came out they started breaking cranks ..so Merc issued a service bulletin to reduce rpm's down to 5250 max rpm's from the 5500 rpm max of older inline six motors.
I believe that hurt performance some .. but Dave's CVX is faster mainly because his, and all CVX16 / C500 / CSS16's have a pad where the CV16 has a rounded bottom.

Bottom picture is CV16 hull and CVX16 hull with pad ..

Thats a nice boat and motor combination, looks like you did a full restoration.  Thats the best way really, then you know what you have and its safe.  Mine has that flat bottom hull pad to.  To bad it -20 here, long way to nice summer days for a burn in the boat.
