Title: 2011 Annual Meet Thread
Post by: ChfBrianB on July 25, 2011, 09:54:47 AM
Friends,
The meet is FAST approaching!  I need your help in getting the registrations in, and getting the word out!  As you know, you can be a part of the largest gathering of Glastron and Glastron Carlson boats in the world!

I would like to make this year a very special event!

Are there things that you are aware of that might make the meet better?  I know that last year there was a Glastron dealer that said we should contact them for support this year.

I'm interested in knowing what your thoughts are on special events at the meet, activities, plans, etc.  This is YOUR meet!  How can it be better?

As always, I would really like to have the reservations in as soon as possible!  I know that this summer has been strange for many of us, but it's not over yet!  Get those reservations in ASAP so that we can properly allocate you slips and space!

Many of you have asked what you can do to help!  THANK YOU!  For those of you who have been to the campground before, you know the things we need!  Feel free to post here what you have and what you can bring.  As you know, in past years it has run very smoothly, so think of the things that you remember and go from there!  Also, you can help by promoting the event!  Get a buzz going, and encourage people to join us!  This year, it's going to be challenging to get our members to come.  We want to let every club member know that we want them to be a part of this event!

I'm very excited to see you all again!  Get those registrations in, and let's have a GREAT weekend!

Brian

I, for one, am one of the many coming...but not yet 'officially' registered (which means...I haven't paid yet...), but...I'll be there!

I know last year there were some law changes that Green & TonkaJim pointed out...anything like that would be a nice reminder.  I never have to think about this stuff on the lakes I boat on...but the river is a different level than I'm used to.

Allan may want to respond to this regarding river rules.
The main 2 things for anyone towing a boat in Minnesota is the new invasive  species laws.
1) All lake weeds must be removed before leaving the landing.
2) All drain plugs must be removed & left out while transporting on public roads.

I'll be there. 19-21. Can't wait!

FYI. If you pay via paypal, when sending the money click the PERSONAL tab then select GIFT. That way Brian does not need to pay the paypal fees. Or just throw in a couple extra bucks to cover the fees.

E-mail sent with info  ;D

I brought way too much stuff last year, I will be down-sizing this year.
I will have a tool box & air pump.
Will you need my deep fryer again this year?

My event suggestions;
Keep it simple & leave lots of free time to visit.
1)Friday night - Dinner, bring a main course for yourselves & something to share - Boat run after supper.
2)Saturday - Breakfast on your own - Group trip to Lake City, own picnic lunch - Supper, Brian's cooking Fried Chicken, Jerry's beans. Bring something to share.
3)Sunday - Break camp - Group trip to 'The Island' for brunch  ;)

Are there things that you are aware of that might make the meet better?

1. My boat fixed up.
2. Gas money for the trip there and back from the north border, and running the boat around.
3. A different weekend. That's the same weekend we go to Itasca for their pioneer show (http://www.itascapioneerfarmers.com/).

I would love to be able to help you with all of these things, but unfortunatly...  I can't  :)

You are always welcome to come down without your boat (to save gas).  Many of our members make trips for a part of the weekend and don't always even bring a boat.  There are MANY people that will be joining that have extra seats for a river run of for a day trip on the water.  Last year we had people join us from 7 different states.  It was a meet to remember, and it's all because people like you are able to join us.  Remember, it's not just about the boat, it's about the fellowship with other Glastron fans!

I would also like to know the answer to that question as I've got a camper I would like to possibly park Thursday night even though I don't plan on coming until Friday. I sent my reservation info in a month ago and asked that question but never heard back either way.

Yes, We are able to come in on Thursday Afternoon.  I'm keeping track of how many people that will be since I need to make sure that Bob and Margi are prepared for us.

Kip,
I know that Chris Kochman is coming but it sounds like they are not bringing a motorhome, so you should be able to grap his spot with no problems.

This year just won't happen for me.  I would like to meet you guys in person. I think Steve (WexRocks) will be there this year. He lives about 15 min from me. I am jealous. Have a great time! and take picture! :P I want to see what I missed.

Also for those of you traveling, I hope you have a safe trip!

OK Everyone...

It's time to get those registrations in!   I've got just shy of 50 people that have contacted me.  Last year, we had 98 registered as we went into the meet weekend.

Let's get on it everyone!

Newspaper ads, bill boards, tv commercials...  Let's get the word out there!  And, if you haven't contacted me, now is the time!  I even want to know if you are just coming for the day.

Don't make me come to your house!  :)  Everyone, pick 5 people and send them an e-mail to their account asking them if they have registered.  Have some fun, and get people excited!  The meet is almost here!

It's going to be great this year!

For those coming from the South/SouthWest of Red Wing.  I fell victim to the routing of the Google Maps last year, and I know others did as well, that routed us through Northfield, MN, Cannon Falls, MN to Red Wing.

(While the route through Northfield may be slightly shorter via Mileage, it will take you longer to get to Red Wing, and you'll be stuck on 2 Lane Hwy's longer than you will using the route below.)

I don't know about you guys, but once I'm up to speed, the last thing I want is to be constantly be slowing down on a 2 lane highway.

I-35 North to I-90 East  (Interstate)
I-90 East just North of Albert Lea, MN to Hwy 63 North (Stewartville, MN)  (4 Lane Hwy)
Hwy 63 to Hwy 52 North (Southern part of Rochester)  (Interstate to 4 Lane Hwy)
Hwy 52 North (at Zumbrota , MN) to Hwy 58 to Red Wing, MN  (2 Lane Hwy for last 23 miles to Red Wing, and no towns after Zumbrota to slow you down.)

This route also puts you into downtown Red Wing 2 blocks from the bridge over the river...the other route had us North of Red Wing and coming back into town.

Google Maps appears to have pulled up the correct route for me this year:

Ha!  Yes Jim,  I am aware that I need to get a list of the adgenda and needed items on the board.  I also realize that all of you die hard fans need to know what is needed so that you can contribute your items, skills, and abilities.

I must be honest...  I'm still grinding it out at the job, and still have to put in a full day tomorrow.  I expect that I'll be able to commit to meet planning ventures by Sunday.

As far as the count goes...  I currently have 78 reservations!  It's going to be really good!  Last year at this time, I had 98, so we are not too far off.  There are some good friends of the club that will be highly missed, but we always hope for next year.

The count is irrelevant to me and my crew.  Lawson is on the road as we toy around on the internet, driving to Phoenix from Glencoe, MN to pick up his CV-23 and me.  We should be arriving Red Wing Thursday and look forward to cruising the river, watching the barges come and go, and chatting with a bunch of friends I/we get to see only once a year. He will be logging over 4000 miles to make the show.  It would have been very simple to say we just can't make it.  He/we are making it happen for us.  I hope everyone else on this board can someday come to the annual meet. Life is short .... play as much as you can!  ;D

This event is yearly MUST SEE for me.

UPDATE:
As of today, I have 78 people registered.  6 parties will be bringing RV's (which is up from 4 last year) so we will have to squeeze them in where we can.  That's a good group, and there will be more that are coming for the day on saturday that haven't registered.

NEEDED ITEMS:Please consider the types of items that are needed to make group camping more comfortable.  Please feel free to sign up for any of the listed items, or bring other things that you have available.

1) Paper plates, cups, napkins, etc. (Paper is best as it can be burned).
2) Plastic cutlery
3) Table cloths or coverings with clips for the wind
4) Lawn Chairs
5) Tiki Torches / Citronella Candles
6) Projector and screen for kids movies
7) Awnings / Tents / Sun Screens, etc for shade and rain protection
8 ) Firewood - (or money to purchase wood. there is fire wood available at the campground for a fee.)
9) General tool kit, spot lights, backup up fuel cans, emergency gear.
10 ) Coolers with bottled water / beverages
11) 2 turkey fryers with propane and frying oil

I'm interested if you can think of otherthings that I should post.  Please reply if you have any of these things, or are willing to bring them.

Thanks!

REGARDING MEALS AND FOOD

I am happy to say that I will again be providing my famous fried chicken on Saturday evening after the run to Lake City.  I will have Fried Chicken and Jo-Jo potatoes for everyone!  Yummy!  I highly encourage everyone to make plans to attend that meal as it is one of the highlights of fellowship for the group.  If at all possible, if you are coming for the day, plan to stay thru the meal and get to experience the group atmosphere around the meal.

Regarding the other meals at the event...  all of the other meals at the Glastron Classic are informal.  Please review the event schedule located here...  http://www.cgoamn.com/75.html

I would like to ask that we have these meals as bring something for yourself, and something to share with the group.  For example, breakfast and social time on Saturday is at 8:30am.  Something nice would be a bunch of banana's and a few loafs of coffee cake.  If each person brought something for themselves and enough for 4-6 others, we would all have a great selection of items, and no one would be overwhelmed with extra responsibility or cost.

Saturday lunch will be picnic style on the beach at Hok-Si-La campground in Lake city.

Please let me know if you have any questions!

Should we have this list on here so people can see what is needed or how should we go about that? That way things could be addressed as needed and we can see what is still needed.
Maybe Doran, Jason or Gregg (with administrator access) could set up a spreadsheet with things needed and they could be checked off as fulfilled? We are running out of time and this could take some burden off Brian. Also we could list how many or how much of each we have. I have both a screen house and canopy but dont want to bring and set up if not needed, but I certainly will.

I'll be bringing some firewood but I dont know that it will be enough for fires friday and Saturday night but right now, just thrown into the back of my truck, it covers about 1/2 the 8' box. As long as they have some to buy, we should be good.

Doran, did you find a good grocery store? Where about? The one I went to was kinda crappy... probably 3-4 blocks north of the bridge and 1-2 blocks off the main drag.  I was anxious to get to our site so didnt feel like dragging a boat thru town. Dragged my skeg leaving their parking lot.
Barb, if nothing else, you could get there and get settled then go over with someone that knows where stuff is. I may do that too. Its just accross the river.

Thanks Ross.  I plan to pull in around noon on Thursday and hope to get settled in pretty quickly.  I have to pick up a friend that is flying up there at the minn\st. paul airport at 6:30 that same evening.  I am not bringing much in the way of camping/survival equipment because on Sunday we are heading up to the north shore to spend the week and camping is not on the agenda, but golf is. (Gotta have room for the clubs).  So I will have to drop Burnin Daylight at the campground and head out again anyway and will probably try to pick up some pre-packaged deli items on the way back.  Anyone know how long the drive is from the campground to the airport in Thursday evening traffic??

Barb - If you need hotel recommendations in IA...let me know.  Des Moines is as good a place as any to stop.  Ames would work too.  If you pass Ames though...plan on another 100 miles before a decent stop (Clear Lake, IA) comes again.

Ross - I think it was Econofoods?  Yeah, couple blocks away from the bridge in the downtown area.  Best Black & Bleu burgers I've ever had came from there last year.  I grew up in Winthrop, MN...so we had to drive to a town that had an Econofoods!  (So it feels like 'home' to me.)

Econofoods....that sounds too good for the one I was in, but maybe?

Barb, the drive to the airport should feel short after sitting behind the wheel for 800 miles!  :D
Some "techy" should be able to post a route to and from the airport with drive time. That wouldnt be me.  :o

Thursday traffic going in the north direction should not be that bad. Most people heading south at that time.

I would plan on a hour, maybe less if what Red said about your driving of Brunin Daylight is true.

Thanks Greg.  I had alread googled the address for the airport and put it in as a favorite in my little buddy Tom Tom.  He should guide me there, don't know which route he will advise me to take but I'm sure I can follow it.

Doran, I found a hotel on I-35 in Clive Iowa just south of Des Moines. Programmed that address in also and is 7hrs and 45 min drive from my house. That time doesn't include stops for fuel, food, bathroom, etc.  I usually don't stop very much when I travel.

I got everything packed up today, and tomorrow morning I have an appointment with Olered to check out the wheel bearings and hubs on my boat trailer, and will head out on Wed. morning around 8.

Barb
Route didn't show up on link I posted.
Taking Hwy.61 is your best bet,  if you take Googles route segestion you'll go the Wis. side, which is a nice senic drive ... BUT you want to make it FAST !

Clive is a nice suburb.  Cracker Barrel restaurant is nice, Granite City is a good chain up here, Machine Shed is good comfort food, etc.  You'll be less than 3 miles from me...so I'm sure we'll see you on I-35 on Thursday.  Let me know if you need anything, pm'ing you my cell.

Have a great trip!

Doran I will contact you when I get there, maybe we can caravan on up together on Thursday.  Thanks for the info.

OleRed knows he can drive Burnin Daylight. When he gets close to her on the water I have to pull the keys or the kill switch to get him out of the drivers seat so I can drive.  He is pretty much tied up with that stroker right now and not much else is going to get in his way of figuring that thing out. I promised him I would e-mail pics daily if I could.

Hey Brian, you were wanting a count on Thursday arrivals.  Unless my boss derails my plans, Nancy and I should be there Thursday also.

Thanks,

Terry

Nah, there will be a couple dozen local stands up around Rochester - Red Wing.  The corn here hasn't impressed us yet.

(But...there's tons of corn here.)

Iowa and Nebraska seem to never fail to grow enough corn to contaminate our oil. Fortunately we can still buy 100% premium fuel and Burnin Daylight will be full of it when we get there.

Burnin Daylight will be full of it when we get there.

FYI - There are at least 2 fuel stations in Red Wing that sell non-oxygenated premium.
You can fill her up before she gets wet.

All Iowa stations sell the old stuff Barb...only the '89' mid-grade has 10% ethanol.  The 87 (what I run) and 92 are non-oxy gas.

Does anyone have a second turkey fryer?  We could get by with one, but two would be nice!

The tents and awnings would be nice everyone!  Thanks for everything listed so far!

For better fuel economy on the tow vehical you can fill the boat in Red Wing.

Craig, the parts man at Supreme Marine, recommends either Mobile or BP. Stay away from Holiday or Super America. The debate is whether to use 87 or 92 octane. I have heard both ways. Use 92 myself.

We had an interesting trip to say the least.  Left a day early from AZ and got here 2 days early!  In Glencoe now doing a few more things to the boat. Anyone traveling up give Omaha a wide berth!  Took us 4 hours to get across the river there due to all the flooding.  See you all soon!

So do we have all the real necessities or are there still some things that are absolutely needed? 2 turkey fryers and fire wood. Should be good to go.  ;D

Thanks!

I don't know if any of these things have been spoken for, but I have an 80" tripod screen and projector, plus dvd player, etc that I'd be happy to bring (used to do screenings for my independent movies). I also have a TON of plastic forks/spoons and plates from various Sams Club runs. I'd be happy to bring those too!

I'm packing up tonight to get ready to head down tomorrow afternoon so please let me know!

Thanks,
Josh

Josh - Bring 'em.  I have a projector, dvd player, speakers, but we need a screen...and the project & etc would be a great backup (or primary) plan if my stuff doesn't work or we have issues.

OK - So nothing like leaving planning to the last minute, but... for us last minute guys... I'm planning tomorrow (Saturday) to be a day trip from Rochester.   Should be able to get the family going in time to be there for the run to Lake City.   How are things looking at the campground for launching tomorrow morning?   My assumption is that it's going to be pretty busy.   So I figure I'd probably launch at one of the marinas across the river and then putt over to the campground to meet up with everyone.

And how are the slip reservations looking?   Pretty much full?   Not sure I'd need one for just the day tomorrow, but if we did want to pull up and walk the campground a bit, is there rafting permitted or would I need my own slip?   There isn't a beach area to pull up to, right?

Thanks!   Hope everyone there already is having a great time!

Here are a few favorite pics from my first year at our annual meet! I can't thank you all enough for giving me such a warm friendly welcome to such an amazing group of people! Special thanks to those of you who helped me with my "old boat" problems!

Brian and Liza you two get your own line! You are two of the kindest people I have ever met. Thank you for doing what you do and here's to many, many more years of boating fun and friendship!
