Back from Vacation with the CVZ-19
« on: July 10, 2010, 06:14:57 PM »
Just got back from our week long vacation up in Park Rapids, MN.

I'm very pleased to report that the CVZ-19 ran terrific!  My starting issues did continue until I figured out that I was flooding it and the 1 'kick' & die issue was really that I was going about starting it up incorrectly.  On this one, once it 'kicks' over once, I need to put the throttle back to 1/2 (not in the start position) throttle, and choke it, and it started every morning after that right off the bat.  So, that issue is now solved.  (Still think it needs a tune up...)

(Surprisingly, Force OB's & Johnson OB's don't start the same...funny huh?)

Anyway, I topped out at 57.2 mph on GPS running almost 6k RPM's...I'm not sure the motor is propped right...as I think that's a bit high on the RPM's for a 30 year old motor.  She can do 0-50 in about 9 secs, and really just takes off like a bat out of ....  well, it moves out!

A few pictures & a video:

One of the speed runs...I think I got 55 mph on this one, against a slight breeze and 20 gals of fuel on board.  I start chine walking around 54 and its not a great feeling.

I knew you would like the speed once you opened up the throttle and got used to it!  :)

Whew D, that thing is QUICK!  Glad to hear you're getting it all sorted out.  I'm still learning the little "quirks" about mine every time I take her out too.  There's no substitute for the big ole grin when it's all working like it's supposed to.   ;)

Thats great to hear. Yeah I think they all have their quirks and once you get em sorted out, its great. I had a hard time starting my 100 merc after I got it and the guy told me it was a "cold beast" but I discovered that I need to bulb ALOT and maybe even after cranking it awhile, then she would fire.
Wow 57.2! Whats the redline spec of that motor? What prop are you running now? Very respectible speed. Maybe you dont need to mess with anything, given that speed and acceleration!

I don't know the redline, but I'm guessing I was too high.  I doubt 6k is ok for it.  I think its prop'd a little low.

Prop is a SS Raker 14 1/2 X 20.

We got 5 inches of rain in one night last Sunday and a neighboring house on the lake was struck by lightning and burned to the ground...the boat was completely soaked, even with the cover on it.  It was so much it was able to get in one of the cover vents.  I must have drained it for 30 minutes...that was a tough morning to watch all that water pour out.  It'd even gotten by the drain plugs, so I left those out for the rest of the week.

The debate is still on at my house on which one to keep...Bluebell or Goldie.

Smiles you bet, plenty...but these are the most important ones:

A 1981 235 HP Evinrude = 4750 to 5750 RPM's.
BIA HP = 235 at 5250 rpms.

Looks like ya had a good time !

Hmmm. yeah I think 6K was too much! That monster sure looks sweet sitting in the back of that thing.
Well not sure you are looking for opinions, but "Goldie" seems like A LOT of work and $$. Look at the enjoyment you and the family had with Bluebell. If you want a project and can keep em both at least until the other one is done, go for it! Then you have one to use and can put off the decision until you see how it turns out. Just MO

Very nice! Glad to see you got some well deserved enjoyment out of her. That 235 is quite alot of torque I'm sure, and yes, I would think it might be a little under propped, but that depends alot on what you want from the boat. If it feels good out of the hole, and works well for skiing, tubing, and all around family fun, then I say keep it where it's at, as long as you think you have enough self control to keep from over revving... Not all of us do! :) if you wanna go fast some times, maybe having a "speed" prop on hand is the way to go. Anyway, I have ladder envy! I am still on the hunt for an original style ladder set-up, and I think I may have used up all my parts-finding luck on the bow cover! Nicely done Dorelse, good to see one of these beauties on the water. Hope you got some appreciation on the water.

A 14.5x22 would (in theory) drop you by 400 rpm so you would be at 5600.  That would be perfect for that motor at WOT.  On the other hand, a steeper prop will have less bite and hole shot.  Most of the people that I know tend to run the prop that get's them into the proper band at WOT.  I bet you could get another 3-4 mph out of her too!

You can't be serious about which boat to keep, are you???  In my mind, it's not even a question.

I'll probably catch heck for this...but...I'm a big fan of Piranha composite props, you can send the blades in over and over again until you get just the right set.  I've run them on my last 3 boats and they were great.

I am serious about which boat to keep...CVZ-19 is by no means perfect, CVZ-18 has new stringers, new floor, new transom, new motor and gives me the freedom to 'make it my own' without damaging an original that's too nice to touch...

I have a love hate relationship with both engine types ( I/O's & Outboards), but the CVZ-18 gives my wife the sundeck she wants and keeps me in the classic glastron family.

So yeah, I do have a decision to make...lot's of 'New' when talking about the CVZ-18...ya know?

Anyway, its a great decision to have to make!

I think you should just build a bigger garage and be prepared to let Jr borrow the keys to goldie once in a while!

Glad you had a great time.  Park Rapid?  You must have gone at least near my old stomping grounds.  Will have to make it a joint vacation some year and show you around Ottertail county!

He's already asked if he can help me finish it.

Yep, Park Rapids.  We've been going for 9 years now.

Yeah, you know, everybody says its good stuff, but we've never gone.  The last thing we want to do is wait in line for food.  We usually hit Rocky's Pizza in Park Rapids or the Logging Camp for breakfast.

Logging camp is a rip-off. West 40 (or east 40 something like that) just out of town has a great breakfast.  Standing in line is half the fun. They have a bar. Dorset is special, even if you don't eat at the "Restaurant Capital of the World"  http://www.dorsetmn.com/

Oh, I've been to Dorset, just not interested in dealing with people & lines when I'm on vacation.  Especially for Mexican food...sorry not my thing.  And since I don't drink when I'm responsible for my family, a bar has little appeal...its just not how I spend my vacation days with the family.

Logging Camp is a tourist trap for sure...but the food is decent, its family friendly, and its near by, and the kids like to chase the chickens around.

A great week at the lake for me, is one when I don't leave for the entire week.  The goal is to get away...and relax!

Hmmm...  Two kids.  Two boats.  Seems rather obvious.  Was there some sort of question here???   ;D
