Title: Help on the exterior..
Post by: don62 on October 07, 2021, 02:07:54 PM
Got my Ski Machine running great, now on to the cosmetics, i've googled and researched how to get the sparkle and shine back with so many ideas to try so I thought I would ask here, to the folks that have actually done it. I tried paste wax but thats not going to do it, the surface is not in bad shape, just faded, where should I start??

Buffer at low speed with a wool pad and 3m heavy duty rubbing compound.
Then 3m fineness it with foam pad
Several coats of wax.

I took off bow light and used un faded flake under it as a gauge as to how it should look.
I used just compound and wax at first, but needed to wet sand, compound, Finesse it 2, wax (all 3M products) to get back to original shine.
You could start with some heavy compound and wax to see results you get.

I don't know what you used Gregg, but it turned a yellow boat blue?   😄.    Honestly all three of you had great suggestions.   Always start with the least abrasive and work up.   If compound doesn't remove the oxidation, then work up to 1500 wet, then maybe 1000-1200.   Always use a backer like a 3m pad, never bare hand with paper.    Most importantly, work in small areas and watch for flake to turn silver.   That is an indication you have gone as deep as you can.  If you still have oxidation at that point, it's time for adding gel coat.
