Title: CVX windshield gasket
Post by: Hyperacme on May 03, 2019, 11:08:35 AM
Any one have a good picture of side / profile of a CVX windshield to deck gasket ?
OR ..
Have a link to a vendor that sells them ?

Here are the dimensions from my 1986 CVX 18 windshield gasket. The gasket from the 78 CVX 18 is the same. On both gaskets the ends were crushed flat to fit under the side trim pieces. I wasn't about to cut the flat part off just to get an end view so here is my attempt at drawing. The picture does give a bit of perspective.

Total width   22/32 in.

Distance from edge of
 bulge to end 14/32 in.

Diameter of bulge  1/4 in.

Thickness of base material  1/16 in.

I'm getting ready to reset my CVX-20 windshield and planned to use the VW welting that Plugcheck recommended... it's very similar. However, if there is a source for the original gasket, please let me know.  Thanks!

Might be worth a call here.   Not sure if they deal with small qtys orders?

Called "simolex" today and inquired on their P-shaped gaskets. They make to order, and the 1/4" bulb, 1/16" thickness, by 1" height (end of bulb to end of tail) P-shaped gasket is a standard size... that I think would work perfect to reset these windshields. Only problem is, they have a minimum order of 100' (they used to fill smaller orders but not any more as they sell and make over 10,000 products--too much to keep up with, etc.). He told me that 100' would be $225 + tax + shipping.

I only need roughly 8'.   DARN!

Well, lets see if we can get up to 100'.   at $2.50 a foot.(  $0.25 to cover tax, shipping and handling both from Mfgr and again to the member). I will take 16' that's a total of 24 feet so far.

Sounds great, let's keep it going... I'll bump my quantity up to 16'.  We're over half way there.

They also told me they can make the gasket in different densities, I'll call them today and see if I can get more information on that. Maybe they could send us a few samples.

Should I post this on the Glastron FB groups ?
Should be a few people looking for gaskets.

I'm confident we'll easily surpass 100'.   Glad this helps many of you as it does me.  Was unable to reach the rep today, left several messages. It's a Friday.  I'll try again early next week and confirm the details.  We may want to let this ride a while longer and see what the number gets up to? I don't mind ordering it... any recommendations on how to distribute?  There is a chance I'll be coming up to the meet (wanted to wait until it's confirmed but just throwing this out there) so, if they could manufacture and get it to me in the next few weeks I could just bring it with me.  Or if I'm unable to go, I could maybe ship it to someone who will be at meet?  That may be a long shot though... not sure what their turn around would be. Regardless, I don't mind getting the pieces out to everyone somehow if necessary.

What is your opinion on density... I thought he told me there are several options from soft -- firm density.  My initial thought would be for a more firm set up. I don't know if he can send me some samples, but that's what I was going to ask for today.

Super!

Couple questions for the group:
1. Rubber density--Sales mgr said they can make whatever firmness we want, but basically... soft, medium, firm. He can't send me a sample other than a cube, which is too hard to evaluate what it will be like when in a small gasket format. Best approximation he gave me... the "firm" is similar to an automotive vacuum hose.  I went to O'Reilly's and looked at one, I think that would work. But, my thought is go with either medium or firm.
     **WHAT FIRMNESS DOES EVERYBODY WANT?

2. Standard or Custom--Sales mgr said he can make a custom gasket if we send him a sample. Tim had a good idea about using an actual gasket for them to reproduce.  Simolex said there would be a cost increase, but can't be sure unless he looks at the actual gasket first. It could only be an $25 increase overall in cost of the 100' to do it this way, really depends on shape of bulb mainly.  My thought is we go with the standard P-shaped gasket (tail is slightly longer than original).  You would just have to make holes in rubber for the windshield bolts to go through, which I'm thinking would actually be good to have a little more cushion.
**GO WITH STANDARDS SIZE OF 1/4" bulb, 1/16" tail, 1" length (tip of bulb to end of tail) ...OR... SEND HIM AN ACTUAL PIECE AND HAVE A CUSTOM GASKET MADE?

3. They have 1 week min turn around on production for the standard gasket. It won't get to me in time to bring with me to meet, but I could order it and ship to someone in MN/WI that will be going to the meet? The pieces to mail out would probably be less doing it this way.  If we do a custom gasket, it'll take longer and won't have for the meet.

Just let me know what ya'll would like to do!

I would have think that our 40 year old gaskets are harder than they were when new.  I am for middle of the road medium density.

How much longer is the tail of the Stock Gasket to original.  If it is within 1/8" I don't care, Id take the stock size.

I'm referencing John's drawing/measurements above at the beginning of this thread.  I think it's 1" vs 22/32".

I'm trying to reach simolex again and send him a picture of that drawing to confirm the size difference.

This is what I sent to simolex to confirm... this is a side by side comparison of John's actual measurements of a CVX-18 gasket to the description simolex is giving me for one of their standard sizes.

Sales mgr is out today. I will call again tomorrow morning and place the gasket on order.  With 1-week turnaround, then time to ship, may not arrive until end of next week. Is there someone there I can ship it to, that is going to be making day trips from their home to the meet?  This way if it ends up arriving on say Friday or Saturday, they can still bring it with them.  If so, please PM me name and mailing address who to ship to.

Gasket has been ordered and payed for. Jeff volunteered to receive, and it was the only address I had in the area, so shipping there. Simolex says 5-10 days then ship, so we may or may not get by event. Regardless, we'll have it. Had to make a decision, went ahead with their standard size to keep cost down, so tail of gasket may be a little longer than original. Black in color, medium density, 1/4" bulb, 1/16" thickness, 1" length. Length can be trimmed if desired.

100' roll -- $225
processed with credit card -- $4.50
no tax
shipping -- waiting from them to see what this will be exactly

Thanks Chad & Jeff for responding and helping out those that needed the last bit of gasket.  I'm going to redo 2 boats with my 16' so, don't think I'll have a lot left over on this order. I can see doing this again, however, down the line if there is more interest.

I won't be on my computer much the next few days, so sorry not responding right away to questions. I'm waiting on shipping costs for the 100', once they do that early this next week I'll have a total bill that we can then have an accurate cost per foot.

Got the UPS shipping notice & invoice for the gasket. Should be delivered to Jeff's house by 8/20.

- Gasket was $225
- CC transaction fee was $4.50
- Shipping was $27.50
- Total charges to me were $257.00
- $2.57 per foot

Would prefer cash or send me a check/money order. PM me for an address.
