Goldie's Whine...
« on: September 24, 2011, 05:21:53 PM »
Winterizing the boat today...heard this whine coming from the rear...its always had it...but this just seems really loud to me.  Think it kind of developed at the meet this year.

Fast forward to about 0:35 seconds into the video.  Thoughts?  The outdrive I just hooked up and used this year, didn't do anything other than new impeller & gear oil...so it could be that...could be the gimble too I suppose, but that was aligned correctly (alignment tool went in like butter...) and greased through the zerk with gimble grease.

That whine may be in the drive, probably the upper bearing pack or improper shimming of the upper gears. When I was first testing my V174 with the replacement engine I "borrowed" a used drive from the boat shop and it had the same whine. It sounded like a jet turbine at times and you could hear it from a distance. See the video links below. Since replacing the drive with a brand new one it doesn't whine anymore. It was cool sounding, I kinda miss it.  ;D

Thanks Rich.  I paid $100 for the complete outdrive knowing that it was an 'old' model and didn't/don't want to put any money into this one.

Any reason to not just run this one knowing I'll be attaching an Alpha in the future?  Or is it something I should get checked out/repaired to keep it working?

I also agree that its in the upper housing...

It's most likely in the upper shaft yoke bearing pack. To replace the bearings and re-shim the gears will cost you a few hundred dollars. I'd say if you don't want to invest any money into it and you're going to replace it eventually then run it until it blows, if it ever does. I think as long as there is oil in the drive and you check it frequently and you're not getting any metal shavings then it should give you no problems.

So I've never winterized a boat myself before. Is it difficult? I keep seeing these kits in stores, online, etc. How many in the group winterize themselves? On the flip side if it is fairly tricky I don't want to kill my motor... Any suggestions for a good place/person to call that does winterizing without spending an arm and a leg? I'm in Woodbury MN as far as geographic location.

Thanks!

No its not difficult...but...if you're not comfortable with it...don't do it.  I have some leeway in that Goldie sits in my garage connected to the house.  It rarely gets below freezing in it.  (Except when the kids leave the door open  :P )

Rich has a nice write up on what to do.  Don't forget Mr. Steve Ackerman, our local resident mechanic.  (74 Carlson) If you're not comfortable doing it yourself...

Here's my write up on the Main CGOA site:

http://www.classicglastron.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3616

I'm completely against the winterizing kits available that contain a jug for running antifreeze through your engine because 1) you'll never completely rid your engine of plain water without first draining it and I don't like diluting the antifreeze with standing water still in the engine and 2) you run the risk of damaging your water pump impeller trying to use the jug to introduce antifreeze through your engine, 3) it's a waste of antifreeze because you shouldn't need more than 3 gallons for the average engine.

Good ideas. Perhaps not this year as mine sits next to my attached garage instead of in it. Heck, I have a hard enough time parking my car in the garage what with all the kids wagons, big wheels and what not! I'll search out a professional and try to find more time to study up on my manuals before boating season next year!

I'll definitely read your link next Rich. Thanks!

Josh - Tanner's in Oakdale would be a good place to check. I've had them do work to my cruiser and was pretty happy with them. Otherwise give me call, I'm in Woodbury. I've always done my own winterizing and can give you a hand.

Excellent Kip! I drive by those guys on 94 all the time and have always wondered what they're about. I just filled out their "Contact Us" form to see what they will charge. I'll see what their response is and let you know!

They are easy to winterize yourself Josh. Sometimes I winterwise mine, then a nice day comes around in late october or november and pull the boat back to the river for more fun, then winterize it all over again.

I have had good luck with Tanners also, bet they get about $100 an hour though.
I think if some one helps you the first time you'll be more comfortable doing it next year.
You'll also learn where and what stuff is on your motor/drive.

If Kip's willing to help, I say "Go for it ! "

Josh - The beauty of those MerCruiser Inline 4's is they are soo easy to work on/winterize as Jason alluded to. Either way let me know.

Josh, if I can do it, you can do it.  OleRed coaches me through shutting it down for winter, but I've done it and could do it again and be confident that it's OK.  Take advantage of the opportunity.

Yeah if Kip is willing to help you learn, go for it and save your money for more Big wheels. Shouldnt take more then a couple of hours I dont think. Depends on if you change the oil now in the spring, outdrive lube etc. Main thing is getting the water out of the block!

You guys are the best and you're right. Why not take the opportunity to learn, talk boats and have a good time doing it right? I'm game if the offer still stands Kip. I'll give you a call this weekend and we'll figure out a time and what I'll need to pick up to be ready.

Sorry Kip, I said I'd call this weekend, but wasn't expecting half the family to come down with pink eye. Kinda threw things off. I'll give you a call soon!
