I drive a $300 1985 Ford Tempo as my commuter car 50 miles per day that gets about 30mpg. At 3.50 per gallon or $1517 per year in gas it would take 33 years for the Volt to pay for itself and thats not including the cost to regarge and fuel that car. We all know, no chevy lasts that long!! :P

Yup and don't forget you probly would have had to replace the batteries 3 or 4 times by then. Wonder what they cost?

Guys, if this was your Classic Glastron would you trade your Johnson or big block for this new technology?

I don't really follow your line of thinking Barb? A boat is a luxury, I don't need mine to get to work, run my kids around, buy groceries, ect. If I had to I could park it for 10 years and get on with my life fairly easily. That's not at an option with my car. Kind of comparing apples to oranges.

How about if you didn't have to send a loved one that's in the military over to fight a war to protect our oil supply? What's that worth to you? What's the payback on that? Some of the first  people to adopt these types of technology are those that have worked in our Federal government and understand better than any of us how national security is related to imported oil.

An all you guys talking about payback. Really? What's the payback on any car that isn't your bare bones, get me from point A to B vehicle.

@Jason - Explain to me the payback on your Marauder?
(Sorry, not picking on you, just using you as an example ;))

The Marauder is used mostly for pulling the boat, weekend driving, and long distance trips. More of a hobby car or as you say, "luxury"! Just like a boat, it does not have much payback value.

Exactly - So there are reasons for purchasing cars other than payback. No payback on the fancier SLT trim in my GMC PU either. Very few people buy cars based solely on payback or what is the absolute cheapest thing to get from point A to B. You could have used that argument with the Prius when it first came out and gas was $1.30 a gallon. Look at how popular they are today.

The Volt is a very high-end car, technology aside. Even the base models come pretty much "loaded". Some say it really should have been marketed as a Cadillac versus a Chevy due to price point, the technology it packs, amenities and fit 'n' finish. I have to agree.  Understand that many Volt buyers are former import luxury car owners that haven't stepped foot into a Chevy dealership in a long time if ever. They compare the Volt to a 3 Series BMW or like. My wife leased an Audi TT a few years back and I can tell you the Volt was every bit as nice to sit in as that car. Actually nicer IMO.

I'm all for these smart fuel efficient cars, my only problem with the Volt is it was made by GM and they had to bailed out last year. I love my Chrysler, but my next car will be a Ford...sorry for the politics...

Yet you forgave Chrysler for their 1979 bailout. Both loans were repaid and jobs saved, although GM cut Saturn, Pontiac, and Hummer to do it which I'm not happy about. I think GM is trying to make cars we want to buy. I remember as a kid trying to find where they were hiding the new cars so we could see them first. I remember looking over a fence at Downtown Chevrolet at the new 57's and I couldn't wait till I was old enough to buy one. Now they are cookie-cutters. My 2000 Grand Cherokee looks like the 2011 Grand Cherokee. Reward the attempt to change things. The only thing Ford did was drop the Crown Vic for more cookies.

That was a really sad day. One of the best cars ever built in my opinion. The panther platform had one of the longest runs. 1979-2011.
