Another expansion plug job!
« on: November 04, 2011, 04:04:39 PM »
Attention Glastron pit crew

Scott & Pauline's CVX-20 needs the expansion plugs replaced.
Scott would like to do the repair in his garage in Maple Grove, MN.
I think we have an engine hoist at the shop that can handle it - 7' 6" lift / 6' 6" horz. reach.
Jeff & Jason have already committed - We just need to decide on a week-end day in Nov. that works for both.
Pauline & Kelly have agreed to prepare a nice lunch for the work crew.
Scott has all parts ordered including valve cover & oil pan gaskets.

The only gaskets we can't find are the two in front that are probably OEM Berkley.
Because the engine get it's water from the jet pump, there is no water pump, just a spacer & cover (2-gaskets)
If anyone knows how to find them, please let us know.

Jim you could contact Rick at CP Performance/Berkeley and maybe he can help with those gaskets?

Rick Bourns [rick@cpperformance.com]

I could help too but if you get too many bodies, they are just in the way.

Just got back in town today. I am free just about every weekend. I am willing to bet the timing cover is the same as a normal 460 so the water pump cover probably uses the same gasket too.

EDIT: I am free this Saturday and the entire next weekend. Would be nice to get it done before thanksgiving.

I can get a plug installer tool too from my neighbor. Just helps to keep from installing the plugs too deep and keeping them straight.

Scott would like to schedule for Saturday the 19th.
Anyone that wants his address, send him a PM.

Thanks for the gasket links, I'll let Scott follow-up.
It's a good chance Jason is right, same as a standard 460.

Sounds like Saturday the 19th (9am start) is a go, at my house in ----EDIT----  Many thanks to those of you that are willing to offer your help and/or insights,  and to Jim and Jason for leading the charge.  What a great group of people to be associated with!

My wife Pauline and Jims wife Kelly will make up a nice lunch for the crew.

Sounds like we have a puller available with some serious reach to it, so that will be nice.  I am in the process of locating parts, kits, gaskets, etc to take full advantage of having the engine out of the boat to do what is needed.

Scott has a good supply of hand tools.
I'll bring my air compressor, impact wrench & sockets
Maybe Jason will bring anything special we may need besides the drivers.
I never used the hoist we have here at the shop, but one of my techs says it will handle the big block - We'll see  ;)

It looks like we have a good crew, Jason - Jeff - Gregg - Steve - and of course me, the pit boss!
If anyone else is interested, Gregg is bringing Jeff's buffin' box!

All needed parts located except for the 4 expansion plugs in the heads.
Size needed is 43/64" / No one in my area has them.

Jason, can you check in Hudson where you got the ones for Brian's 460?

Just a quick search online and you can get the entire set for the engine from what I see for anywhere from $12 - $30 depending upon if it's steel, brass or stainless.

Check Jegs, Summit Racing, Ford motor racing, Napa and they should have everything you need in one kit.  I just helped my neighbor with his 440 for his Challenger and his kit came from Jegs for under $30 for every plug and dowel.   Looks like the Milodon Brass kit for the 429/360 from '72 - 97 is probably what you need. About $26 at Summit.

Hope this helps.

Need them for Saturday. Too late to order online
Scott already has the engine plug kit - The 4 for the heads don't come with it.
We had the same problem with Brian's 460, No head plugs in the engine kit.
Steel replacements should be OK. Old steel ones lasted 35 years.

NAPA part number should be 381-2188 for the 43/64 plugs.

Thanks for checking Jason!

I will be bringing a 110V welder so someone can re-weld Scott's trailer fender.

Someone will need to bring a welding hood.
