Moment of silence
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:32:34 PM »
It is with the utmost embarrassment & chagrin, but I feel an obligation to tell you. 3/28/11 was the night the V153 suffered it's fatal injury. It's totalled and I'm still sore.

Anyway. So next wednesday around 8:30 or 9:00? Say a prayer for the baddest V153 that ever lived! (Pending David's results ...)

Funny Doug how those dates of tragedy stick in your memory. One of my dates is March 25, 1997 driving the Toyota Corolla in a late Minnesota snowstorm to work and got caught behind another car's snow wake creating a complete white out. Gripped the steering wheel straight and hoped I would not hit him. Hit him and banged my car both front and rear. Still driveable, but sold it soon afterwards. The bright spot is that I have been driving Toyota Celicas ever since.

Yes, those V-153's are great boats.

Doug, those V-153 boats become a part of you that bring up memories from time to time. You could write a book about the restoration and use of your boat. Fortunately, they can mostly be replaced, which is what you have done. But still they have a special place that the present Baja can not fill. RIP Glastron V-153.

Good luck in your constant quest for a higher top speed. I'm sure there are more things to tweak.

I was always told there are pictures...but, until there's photographic evidence...I now deny all charges.

I've never hit one, don't plan in it , but it can happen to anyone, including me. My brother hit one January 7th this year up by the damn in Red Wing. He was out fishing with our dad, stayed a little past dark. Luckily they were barely on pain and going down river. The marker actually went under the boat, only damage was to the bow cap. MY FAMILY KNOWS BETTER. We grew up on the river It was extremely cold out that day so my dad was facing backwards in the middle seat of a tiller style boat. That marker lined up perfectly behind my dad the whole time. Luckily no one was hurt, just real scared.

Sorry about your 153.

I'm trying to find the thread.

If I remember right Doug took a pretty nasty hit with some broken ribs/collar bone??  And the V153 was hurt beyond repair...but it still managed to get Doug home.

BTW...I'm wasn't try to give Doug a hard time...in fact, his accident has made me be extra cautious whenever I'm on the water.  I believe he knows that marker well...so I took his accident as a reminder to always be super cautious even in familiar waters.

After hearing you guys talk about wing dams, those make me nervous as well!

I'm a lot more scared of dead heads. The only way you know they are there is when you hear or feal the boom. Wing damns are usually visable. Again, usually!!

Moral(s) of the story:

Just when you think you know the channel. Ya don't.

Carry a big bilge pump.

Hitting a fixed object @ 25 - 30 mph can be extremely damaging to the Captain (his ego in particular) & potentially fatal to the boat ...

Really Doug, your accidents and injurys should be related to your canvas work - hole through the finger from the industrial sewing machine, sliced finger from cutting the canvas. But your biggies are non-work related: bouncing off telephone poles and falling off  go karts. You might consider working 24/7 to stay injury free, plus enough money for the car and boat of your dreams.

Y'know it truly is amazing I haven't stitched through a finger yet. Then again my machine has a really good brake?

Correction. The go kart rolled, I didn't fall off of it.

edit. Tell ya what sucked most about that escapade was I was 'bout 3/4 done with the V153. Set me back a couple months.
