OT: Timing Belt on Ranger let go
« on: October 31, 2014, 04:23:18 PM »
Put new one on now no compression. I thought these motors weren't sposed to bend valves?

did you make sure the timing marks were lined up when you installed the belt?  I know stupid question but I have to ask.

possible your 180* out cause these motors are not supposed to be an interference motor. if your break or jump time nothing should be hurt... now unless your head gasket has blown which sometimes can happen when the valves are closed and the piston shoves air into the cylinder and it has nowhere to go...it's a possibility...

Thanks Buck. I always thought that these were "non-interference" motors.

I didn't personally string the new belt. But being 180 deg outa time makes sense. I was having a hard time imagining all the valves were bent?

Hope we're not wrong ...

Good luck, hope that's your problem, if not blow compressed air into each cylinder on tdc, see what ya get

maybe you can search through these treads, and find some useful information. I belong to this forum, and have used it many times working on Fords trucks, suvs ect
http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/search.php?searchid=9080482

and here is the home page, if you need it, just look over at the right side column for navigation, and choose what topic you maybe looking for, and they do have a search box for each forum

Just google Ranger valve timing images to get the marks.  This forum might be helpful:
http://www.fordrangerforum.com/4-cylinder-tech/106310-2-3-wont-start-after-timing-belt-replacement.html
If you have to remove the the valve cover and check the intake valve closing  if you can get the valve timing degree specs.  Don't know where to find them.  They recommend changing the belt at 60,000.  My neighbor changed it at 200,000 after it broke. (Old Ranger)  I can ask him.
Bought a big Harley way back in my younger day that had the valve timing off.  Got it fixed by watching the push rods.  Surprising what we can remember.

Good news! Think we got it figgered out. My boy John came over to the shop today with his tail between his legs and mumbled, "Uh ... I think you were right. I may not have used the right timing marks." So we'll see what happens tomorrow. Keep yer fingers crossed.

Speaking of Harleys my lil bro just bought one. So I was able to commandeer his Tahoo for a few days. Can't wait to get outa that leviathan and back into the Ranger. God what a massive vehicle that thing is. Thirsty too.

Forgot to say we pulled the valve cover. That head/camshaft assembly is pristine. No sludge, no carbon, very little visible wear. After 234K it's freakin amazing.

so far, that's good news! I hope it works out for ya, and the clean internal engine parts, ya always want to see that:)...those engines are good. I had a 97 Ranger with the 2.5 5 speed, but it had a 373 factory ring, pinion gear, it was made for hauling, wasn't much on the take off, but would pull my other boat no problem...
good luck, and update us when u find out what happened, and what fixed it..

Not sure what kinda gear is in this one. Doubt it's 3.73. Feels more like 2.73 ... (I can get out'n run faster ...)

Far's the motor not running yet I'm positive it's a timing problem. These are non-interference motors. They don't bend valves or dent pistons if the timing belt breaks. Hence the phrase: "Non Interference".

Try'n tell this to someone who's convinced otherwise. Like pissin in the wind ...

Lemme tell ya Brandon, I'm so freakin relieved it ain't funny.

Hate having to borrow a car from somebody. First my Mom'n then my bro. (The fact that neither one of them smoke has been very stressful on me ...)

Though it has taught something. I would never, ever, wanna own either of those vehicles.

Mom's "Freestyle" never shifts gears! Seriously it's like a slushamatic transmission. Did y'all ever drive one'a those contraptions? Very unnerving.

And Bro's Tahoo is way too big & thirsty for my liking. Had to get on the grabbers purty hard earlier today cuz some snowbird (no offense) pulled out in front of me. Wasn't sure I could reel the beast in in time ...

Don't forget, Ford Rangers were made in St. Paul, MN besides the Ford dam along the Mississippi River. Ford Corporation is still cleaning up the soil to standards. Very valuable piece of property.

Well we had a minor setback this AM. Heater control valve disintegrated on the way to the shop. Replaced it then noticed water dripping elsewhere. From guess what: The water pump.

So guess who drove it home'n spent the day installing a new pump, etc. Required pulling everything back off the front of the motor. Down to removing the timing belt cover. Sigh ...

Naturally it was hot & sunny. Couldn't've been cool & breezy like the day before ...  But we got her back together and running with no leaks to report.

Did so with only minimal blood loss and minor bruising ...  I gotta tell ya this 'old man skin' is for the birds. I'm like a human pin cushion these days. What's up with that?

Ah well. Bobby Beer showed up just in time to hand me my nuts, and bolts during reassembly. And now Rangerette is ready for another 234K! WooHoo!!!

Bobby play trick on Doug. He say turn on AC to make truck warm up faster. Doug check for leaks afterward see water dripping. Doug nearly have coronary before he remember AC make water drip.

Timing belts rarely break on their own for no reason. Almost always a result of a oil or coolant leak or failed idler pulley bearing. Whenever doing a timing belt replace all pulleys with bearings and water pump.
