2015 CGOAIA Meet Planning
« on: June 16, 2014, 05:52:40 PM »
Moved/Split thread for 2015 Planning!

I'm good with that, provided you go first...no channel markers...you can find the sand bars first!

Pictures should be fixed.

We had absolutely perfect water Thursday & Friday.  Little wind, no boats Thursday and most of Friday.  Saturday was very windy, so a couple of us went over to the resort to the water park.

Boat issues...mine isn't running right, Mike H's CVZ is gonna be a screamer when he gets it dialed in...Brandon blew his drive coupler...Erik's CV-23 is running great with the new motor.  Joe P's boat is ready to rumble...Joe 'Deuceman's boat was perfect as usual.

All in all a good weekend...thankfully the cicada's quieted down and night...how cow!!!

What else...um...they broke a water main, so our bathrooms were completely closed...had to go over by Barb's cabin to use a bathroom, shower, etc.

There was some discussion about moving it North or West next year...possibly Emmetsburg, Five Island Lake...or to Lake Icaria, Adams, IA...out west.

We'll see.  Emmetsburg has quite a bit to offer, Casino, Freshwater lake, camprounds, hotels, etc, and a couple hours from the TC's.

If folks are interested, I'll run up and take a look some day this Fall.  Supposed to be a nice area.

I lived in Emmetsburg many years ago. As I remember the lake was pretty good. If i remember the whole top half of the lake was pretty shallow, but if i remember they dredged it.  Also if you are thinking about that Area. Okoboji has a pretty large chain of lakes and there is plenty of different camping areas around the lake. I am really going to try and make next year.
I think this has become an addiction.

Okoboji would be fun...expensive, lots to do, super busy lakes, but fun.

My only thought was that Emmetsburg would potentially be more welcoming to us since we'd be 'News'...Casino has a nice RV park, but the campground is essentially a city park...so not necessarily great there.

2 years with terrible bathrooms at a State Park and I've about had it, and who puts a campgound on a hill and doesn't level at least a tent spot (Iowans...that's who)...the other option is a Corps park at Rathbun...but Rathbun is a haul for anyone not in the Southern 1/2 of Iowa.

Anyway, I'm willing to check it out if people are interested.

I will say this, Thursday & Friday were amazing 'on the water' days...even if it took 200 yards for me to get on plane and I could only cruise at 28 mph...still great days.  (DNR left us alone too...well, except for the helicopter buzzing Travis.)

Now...about the Amberg's...   :D

Okoboji does look like fun, but VERY developed but a lot of places to explore. The nice thing is it would be about a four hour drive from Central City.  I do like Rathbun but, I am with Doran the restroom thing has been an issue the last two years. I did send an email to the DNR customer service about the issues from this year. I am curious to see if I get any response out of them.

Lake looks like it is pretty shallow.  http://www.iowadnr.gov/Portals/idnr/uploads/fish/maps/fis74.pdf

Thinking there would not be a lot of room to run multiple boats. I remember the lake just being long and skinny.

If Okoboji was chosen there is many different places to stay and the chain of lakes is pretty large. I have stayed by Arnolds Park area before and a couple of the campgrounds on the west side of the lake. We used to go over there a few times a year when I lived in IA

I was reading yesterday on the Emmetsburg city web site that the lake is only a half mile wide and 4 miles long. Not much room to run IMO. I would say check out Okoboji in the fall at this point, and I would be happy to meet you there on a weekend to look it over.

What dis I miss Doran? Does not sound good.

I think Okoboji would be great as well. A little closer for us MN/WI folks. Chains are always fun. I have not been out there but have always wanted to check it out.

Yeah, I'm not going to Okoboji...but, by all means, go for it.  Those lakes are crazy busy on the weekends, multiple deaths there, BWI arrests...no thanks.

I agree the area has a lot to offer, and Emmetsburg may be too small, but if you want 'room to run' Okoboji isn't it either.

I have (what I'm sure) is a minor issue, in that I my accelerator pump gasket disintegrated, so I have no 'punch it' acceleration, but I also have no throttle speed either.  Engine starves for fuel at about 2k rpms...and I can't get it over that without the motor killing.

Mike H. is sending over his 898 carb from his CVZ (old motor) so I can try it.

The advantage the state park had over the Corps of Engineers parks was the cabin availability and the extra wide boat ramp.  Even with "low" water, there are six lanes.  Last year's high water provided side-by-side room for 10 launches at the same time.  I think we've all made comments about how the tents were tipped just a bit.
I can let the Rathbun Lake Area Chamber of Commerce know about the bathroom issues.  They aren't DNR, but if they feel that they've lost visitors because of it, they might get some new voices in the discussion.  Hard to get a state agency to move forward on anything.

If that is the case, I would say not there either!

Have to agree  - my in-laws have a place on East Okoboji & left Sparkly up there for a summer a few years back.  For the most part the boating was not very enjoyable as the lakes were often very choppy & there are a ton of "ocean liners" on the water that put out major wakes.  However, if you do decide to go Okoboji you could have a boat show at the Arnolds Park docks, they have an existing boat show that I crashed that was pretty cool - everyone ties up their boats & the public comes out all day to check it out.  Other then the docks their really isn't a great area where everyone could beach.

There's also Red Rock up here north of Rathbun. Lots of camp grounds to choose from and a few beaches. It's not commercialized, so it doesn't get busy like Saylorville, Okoboji, Clear Lake, ect.

It's easier to get to also since it's just off of the four lane Hwy163.

It is larger though, so if it's windy it will get rough, but it almost always will calm down in the evening at least.

Red Rock would work...saves an hour off everyone's travel, and 4 lanes all the way too.  A little busier than Rathbun, but it could work.

I could be ok with Rathbun again, but I won't be camping at that campground again.

Ok, resume ideas!

My thoughts for looking 'Up North' was only something in the N/W quadrant of the stat would be a good central spot for everyone...

I am with Doran, Red Rock would work and it does save on drive time even for me.

Rathbun I am ok with going back to again, but a different campground is a must.

Red Rock has some pretty shoreline to follow … it's not too far different from Rathbun in size, so plenty of room for boats.

What about having a meet in Il.thats about the middle for everyone in Iowa and Minnesota. We have the Chain-o-lakes  here with a nice state camp ground and boat ramp.Plenty of places to tie up boats and swim  or places to eat all around the lakes and channels. There is an Island with a bar that has boat races every Thursday, and bands.Maybe an idea.
