Donor boat home
« on: March 26, 2011, 02:32:50 PM »
Today the boat in hasty mn was bad somee people can ruin a good boat. We got there its been out side all winter uncovered with 1 foot of ice and snow. Got back in the truck went home so i thought Jason left a link of the a boat in maplewood so i called. After a call to Jason and Jeff to make sure i was looking at everything right i talked down the guy to 400 from 900. It a very ugly yellow boat called mellow yello. It has a 3.0 and i think a mr with tilt and trim. The guy said he had it running last fall and it ran good. but there was a hole in the boat its self oh well. It was in the back yard turned my truck around and went for it. Half way there i got suck could not move. had to get towed out after i called on star because my son locked the keys in the truck stuck in yard of people i didn't know. Thats my saturday but its home time will tell if ik was a good deal i will post pics later. Ok Ok i will need anyone that will help with the tranplant please let me know i would like to start ripe into her soon soon i can junk the other boat and work on my baby.

Good to hear Tom. Looking forward to the pictures. Are you still living near Stillwater/Lake Elmo? First thing will to be to get the engine running in the mellow yellow boat to make sure it's worth the swap.

You may need to glass in a new mounting pad for the front of the engine as this one will be shorter than your 6. I have never done any glass work but after Red's thread it does not look that hard! I know your old 6cyl carb will work on the 4cyl. They are the same.

There you go...make sure the engine is good to go, sell the trailer, you'll be out a couple hundred bucks at most.

Fiberglassing is easy...smelly (and can be messy), but easy.

yup i still live in stillwater i am going to gut out everything around the motor are for easy access. unfornatuly i don'r have a heated garage to let it warm up. I am going to pour the rv stuff through the intake and see if it comes out and the same  with the block if it does thats good i think. i will try try and turn it over and for some reason the gas tank is out but i can run it from a gas can if need be. i like taking it apart when it doesn not matter and wont be put together

I sure hope the engine was winterized or at least drained in the fall. I'd hate to have you find it it wasn't and the block and manifold are cracked. Where are you pouring in the RV stuff? Should be in through the large water circulator hose, when it comes back out through the T-stat housing then the block is full.

you don't need a heated garage! it's only gonna get warmer out from here on out.

I don't know how you can fill the intake/exhaust manifold water passages with rv.

Have fun with the reciprocating saw!

well not sure if not good finnally good to look over motor good and i see ice build up everywhere i am hopeing the drained the motor and intake but i can't tell. i looked over the block well and don't see external cracks but that most likely not tell me anything. what i need is to get everything warm so it melts. At this point i am not confident about the motor but i am not giving up just yet. I was wondering if i should try and turn it over like it is tomake she turns.
the model is a 74 classic the what the sticker says

Put 12V to the positive side of the coil and jump the starter solenoid. Give her a little starting fluid down the carb and see if she pops!

OK so the real advantage to this one over your six is the outdrive set up, is that right? I dont remember looking at it when it was on the trailer. I assume its an OMC? Isnt that what Rich changed out? Could you get the merc outdrive to work with your original six? Maybe its not worth it. I dont know.

Neither of us had OMC engines or drives. If I remember right he was having problems with the engine leaking water into the engine oil from somewhere. The goal is to change out the engine and upgrade the drive system from original 1966 Mercruiser to something newer and more reliable where parts are also more available. My conversion was from 1967 Mercruiser to 1988 Mercruiser Alpha One drive system and a 1986/87 engine.
