Tom - If you remember, my 898 block was cracked when I took it to the machine shop.  They had an extra Mercruiser block they sold me for like $100 since they didn't have a use for it and it was already bored & ready to go.

I'll bet you can find the same thing...and you won't have to tear it all down ahead of time...just something to think about.

Yes, it was bored .030 over from what I remember...beyond that...I don't remember much else.  I think I spent around $1200 total, including new distributor, rebuilding the carb, and having them run & time the engine on their engine stand.  That way I knew it was running when I put it in Goldie.

Best investment I ever made on the boat IMO.

Tom, The first thing I would do is call the guy that sold it to you. If he sold it to you as a good runner and he knew it was cracked that's fraud. Tell him you want your money back or you will press charges. My guess is he will either take it back, or give you some of the money back. I hate dishonest people.

It still amazes me that frozen water will bust open cast iron. No other path of least resistence then out the side?
I hope I am not dealing with a similar situation in a couple of weeks. Guess no point worrying about it yet.

Tom, let me know when you are ready for the hoist. I am busy this whole weekend but am free most weeknights too. Shouldn't take long. I can take the engine block with me if you want. I have a few other engines and transmissions to scrap anyway.

If it's easy enough to junk it with the boat do that, otherwise I can swing buy and pick it up but we would need to lift it 4' to get it into my truck though.
