2011 Flood
« on: March 28, 2011, 05:24:15 PM »
River is getting pretty high. The Hudson Marina is about to go under water. I think the river is still suppose to crest on the 31st and it seems to be going up at least a foot a day. You can see these boats are getting close to being set free. This marina must have hundreds of boats sitting on the shores winterized. Not sure what their plan is, but million's of dollars in boats look to be soon floating down the St. Croix.

My question is  if the river got really high what holds the boats down from floating off their lifts i always wondered that

There's nothing holding them down. They'd just float away.
I drove down by the river on my way home tonight too, to check it out. Drove down to the landing and the water is well up into the turn around area.
There is a pier sticking out at Wolfs Marine that is usually WAY out of the water and they store boats on that. The water is near the top. I've seen it go over before and about 4-6 feet up the side of there building. They moved the boats that time shortly before the water reached them.
Looks like many more at the Hudson Marina. I wonder if you have to have flood insurance for a boat in dry dock. ???

Ouch...  many of those boats probably have their out drives pulled off for the season as well.   Should the float away, I bet they won't be floating for long.

I did the accounting and tax return (as their outside accountant) for the St. Croix Hudson Marina back in 2002 or 2003 after the flood that spring. The flood damaged one building beyond repair and they built a new building housing the conference room, living quarters, store, and boat service area. Each dock site is owned and the expenses of the Marina are divided up and assessed based on the length of the dock footage. That year, each member contributed their share to the cost of the new building plus the regular fee for normal costs. They built the new building on higher ground and hopefully they built high enough. They also had a shrink wrap fire that year. I wish them the best as they were great people to work with and the facilities are top flight.

I did some recon at our beloved ft. snelling launch and the park & parking lot are under water again this year, we'll see if it tops last year or not...the re-freeze and possibility of more snow are making flood season a little whacky this year.

I stopped at the landing again north of stillwater and its higher then it was earlier in the week. Could still drive through the turn around at the landing so far. Still more ice to melt too.

Gregg, dont you usually get flooded at work? How that going?
