CV23 Exhaust: Yet another thru hull exhaust thread...
« on: April 12, 2011, 11:41:38 PM »
Under intense pressure from Shrom (just kidding bud), I'm starting the CV23 thru hull project thread a few days early. This is inherently repetitive, as I'm using a lot of the same parts that Jeff, Craig and Shaun used, all successfully, but they are getting tossed in a 23 instead...that's the big curveball.

Jeff, the nicest guy ever, is helping me pull the engine, measure and cut holes this coming Sunday, and it seems like we should be able to get the majority of the work done in one day. The only piece I don't have yet is the new t-stat, which I won't be getting until next week from mooreperformance.

Here's a quick list of the parts I'm using (I'll add more pics throughout the week):

"Lightly" used Mercruiser center-rise manifolds (ebay score)
Mercruiser "S-Pipe" kit (same kit as all three guys used)
10" Tips with internal mufflers from mooreperformance
Alternator Bracket from BPI
New (center-rise style) T-stat from mooreperformance.com

It's been a long winter watching Jeff, Shaun and Craig pull off the conversion flawlessly and I can only hope my boat turns out as nice. Thanks again to all of you guys for posting the info and pics that you did!

Here's a shot of the engine before I removed the manifolds and hoses:

Since then I have taken off both manifolds, all of the cooling hoses, mounted the new alt bracket and alternator and cleaned up the motor.

Basically it's all ready for Sunday...

I can Hear it already !
Lets gather all these thru-hull conversions up under the bridge at Red Wing, point em down the river and open em up all at one time ... I get a 200 ft handicap ... call it a Carlson Blast !

I am getting the feeling Red Wing will be quite a bit "louder" this year! I can't wait!

My thoughts exactly...hopefully it'll go quickly with both of us working on it.

And yeah, the Red Wing meet is gonna sound a lot meaner this year... 8)

Shrom - would you mind posting a pic of how/where you mounted your starter solenoid? I think I know where I'm gonna bolt mine up, but would like to see how you mounted yours.

Thanks...

Alex,

Great to hear your getting started! What I did with mine was drilled out the bracket that it is mounted on and put it on the rear manifold bolt (solenoid facing the motor).

Shaun -

Thanks man I'm really excited! It's about time I got this started, huh?

Regarding the solenoid, that's pretty much what I planned on doing. I've already drilled out the old bracket; I just have to wait and see how everything fits with the new manifolds in place. I'm interested to see what Craig did too...

Rosscoe - here's an ebay link for the t-stat from mooreperformance if you haven't found it yet:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/THERMOSTAT-HSG-CONVERSION-MERCRUISER-1978-1982-EXHAUST-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trkparmsZalgoQ3dLVIQ26ituQ3dUCIQ26otnQ3d4Q26poQ3dLVIQ26psQ3d63Q26clkidQ3d8473383734325579780QQ_trksidZp5197Q2em7QQitemZ310157844779

And the only reason my engine seems clean is because it was delicately preserved by a 1/4" of grime 8)

Thanks for posting that pic of your starter solenoid Shaun - I'll be getting that mounted on Sunday....which can't get here soon enough  >:(

Just for the hell of it, here's a shot of the manifolds I got on ebay (obviously I'm not using the elbows). Not bad for $155:

And the tips/mufflers I got from Dennis Moore...I went with muffled tips to take the edge off of the notoriously loud db levels produced by thru hull exhaust, but I doubt the muffled tips will make that much of a difference.

Not the best pics but...

I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality of the tips - the only thing I wish Moore had was a sound clip of the tips in action for those interested in buying them.

The muffed tips will make a huge difference to tell the truth. I had baffles for the Basset Headers on the old flat bottom I had.  I loved the sound with the baffles out but would most always get gigged for excessive noise when I ran without them ... which I usually did!

First off Chris, that flat bottom is awesome :o

I just want it to sound good at idle and not be so loud that no one wants to ski/tube behind it...hopefully these tips proved to be a decent choice.

And considering how loud the cars were that I've owned and built over the years (mostly from the 70's), I really can't believe I want something to be QUIETER? I must be getting old... :'(

Ya, it was a hemi.  392 and it sounded incredible!

Sold it to a friend of mine who wanted the engine for a hotrod project.  Wish I had not given in to him but he made me an offer I could not walk away from.  Been looking off and on for another pretty much ever since.  Was not a good lake boat but sure was killer on the rivers!!! In and out box only.  Idle was moving unless you shut it down and shifted out.  Fun but a bit scary.

Sorry  .. hijacking your thread .. back to the 23 through hull talk  ;D

Alex those muffled tips look great! They have a nice beefy/substantial look. Almost too pretty to cover  up with the flappers. Funny they didn't have some type of a decibel rating on them. For $25 extra a side not a bad investment IMHO.
