I would expect the replacement to have the same number of wires as the original if the replacement came from Mercury unless the 6 wire stator was not original to the engine. Can you describe the wire colors and their placement on the engine? For a 4 cylinder Merc it should have a red, a blue, and two yellows, and maybe a black ground wire. I have seen some aftermarket stators from CDI to use a 6 wire stator for both 6 cylinder and 4 cylinder engines, they just tie a blue and red to engine ground in the 4 cylinder application instead of connecting them to a switch box.

Mercury did make a change somewhere in the 90's and discontinued the original Stators on some models(known as black stator) they were replaced with a Red stator and it came with an adaptor for wiring......it seems to me the reds used green/white etc.......if that is the case you need the adaptor (ties wraps on by the starter I think)........not sure if this pertains to the problem you are having but thought I would throw it out there. I will be out of the store for a week or so but if you wanted to call Hannays with the part number they could tell you if this is the case,  there was a parts bulletin you are directed to when you look up the original Stator. Either Nate (Service Department) or Tom in parts woud be able to check I would think, the number there is 612-781-7411 if you want to call. open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 9-6...9-6.....9-3.

Turns out the stator ( part # 398-9710A45 )  has been discontinued, hopefully its a simple harness fix and i wont have to buy the aftermarket cdi stator ( part# 174-9710K1 )  Would have been nice if Jims Snowmibile and Marine in Holdingford Minnesota would have noticed the discontinued status of the part i needed when i gave them the serial number.   I wouldnt have gone through the 4th without a boat.   Lesson learned just cause a dealer says it's the right part that doesnt mean it actually is.
