Very nice! Someday I want to add a 160 to the collection.

Keep up? You couldn't keep up with the CVX? Ha!

It is a 115. Bad lower unit. I want to put the short shaft 150 on there, but I found some rebuilt lowers for $300 so may just fix it. Runs nice. Fits in the garage!

I don't know how the parts interchange is on Mercurys, but I have this parts motor, if you could use this lower unit we could work something out

Brian

Not sure if a short shaft motor will work on that hull

It is set up for a 20" lower unit

Somebody on this forum has tried it with very mixed results

The LU on the 85 HP motor will fit, might have to change prop if gear ratio is different.
Do a Google search for " Mercury 850 & 1150 drive ratio's.

It appears the 850 foot will work on the 1150. The 850 has a 2:3 1 ratio and the 1150 a 1:78 1 ratio. It's just the housing on the lower that's bad. PO had the motor tilted very high and the threaded area in front of the prop got ice in it and split. I would think the gears are good as water didn't get inside. May be able to swap the internals? I would like to keep the 1150 on there, its rigged nice and runs nice. I got the 150 for the picklefork, but was considering putting it on the GT thinking the shorter shaft would help top speed. I'll get ahold of you Joe!

Being able to fit in the garage and still be able to move around is nice. The CVX prop touched the back wall and the lip of the tongue was an 1/8in from the garage door ribs. That was also at an angle so it took up all the space. I need a pole barn!

I read/wrote that wrong. The 1150 has a 2:1 ratio.

If you used the 85 lower unit, you would have to go about 3 pitches higher to compensate. That would take you to a 24" Laser II. Speed wise, I have no idea how much slower (or faster)  the 24" would be than the normal 21".

I had a 80 HP Mercury (2.3 to 1 lower unit gears) on a Glastron V-153 that went 44 MPH with a 21" 2-blade bronze Quicksilver prop. Switched to a 115 HP Mercury with 2 to 1 gears and used the same 21" pitch prop to go 54 MPH.

A lot of the Mercs changed internally and cases, but the case should interchange.  I had a 115 with 1.78 gears that went bad.  I put a 80hp lower on, had tremendous torque but sold it and installed on a heavy IMP.  The guy tore the gears out.  I think the gears are too thin for the power.  I would get a newer 2:1 lower if that's all you need.  If I understand you want to put the 85 lower on the 150 or the 115.  That will work.  Just don't Hammer down too hard.  Check the ratio on the 150.  The gears are hard to set up preload and free play on.

I am looking to replace the LU on the 115. The LU on my 150 is correct for that motor and set up by a 30+ year Merc tech. I'm not taking that one off!!!

The 85 hp will work .. If it's been sitting a while have it pressure tested first, to make sure seals are good ...
I have a Lazer II 22 pitch you can try.

That's a 50-51 mph boat with a 135 w/1.78 gears.  We had one.  It ran 52 (speedo) @ 5100 with a 23 no cup 2 blade bronze.  And about 50 with a 3 bronze 21.  Putting in 2.3 gears might be disappointing.  With a cup 22 you might get 47.7 @ 10% running 5600 according to the prop calculator.  49.4 @ 5800.  That's adding 1" for the cup.  You can try it .  5800 won't hurt the Merc.  The earlier ones had a small outside strake.  Chine walked.  They modded it about 1973 to about 3".  Check it out.  72 was the first.  Built til 76 according to Iboats.

Mine is a '75. I have never had anything fast enough to be chine walking. Doesn't look like fun!

Old Walt on the national Glaston site said one did not have chine walk until 60 MPH. Anything under 60 MPH was loose steering, bad motor mounts, or improperly balanced boat.

Above 50 these things start rockin an a rollin , my best was 54 in my 72 with a 87 merc 115 , the chine walking was getting worse the faster i went and was quite unnerving . Still a really fun boat and a real head turner .

The 72 had the narrow outside strake.  I think the 73 was modded to prevent the chine walk.  The old 115 probably won't have that problem.  Anyone else check/measure yours to see if I'm right.  They also had a steeper V hull  That's why I opted for the CVX.

OK ... Thought I had seen it before ...

Very negotiable since I have not been using the boat much over the last two years and would like the garage space back. This boat gets attention whenever it's on the water!

For Sale: Classic 1975 Glastron GT 160 in medium blue. In decent shape for it's age. The boat is powered by a 1978 Mercury I6 "Tower of Power" that was rebuilt roughly 8 years ago. The carbs were rebuilt around 2 years ago. The fuel pumps, wires, plugs, etc were all replaced in the last few years as well. The boat has power tilt and trim and with a substantial 1/4" thick stainless steel transom plate. The windshield and aluminum trim is in great shape and was buffed out a few years ago. I had some electrical issues inside the engine cowling so 90% of the engine wiring harness has been replaced. The tilt trailer is in great shape and has some new poly rollers. It has a newer winch, wiring, and lights. The tires, bearings and bearing buddies were replaced a few years ago and are in great shape. The floor and front seats were replaced at some point and are serviceable as-is. It has a rear engine support strut and transom straps for trailering as well as a new cover last fall (2015). It also has an older stereo with CD player, air horns, etc. I replaced the fixed antenna that was on the boat when I bought it with a power antenna so it can be lowered under the boat cover. I have two propellers for the lower unit.
I have reproduction graphics for the side "football" emblems and a reproduction sticker for the round chrome GT 160 emblem on the deck that I have not installed yet. Please see pics for detailed condition.

 Areas that need attention:
The interior is in decent shape, but the rear flip-up seat retains it's original upholstery which is a bit faded, dry, shrunk and in need of help.
The transom does have some soft spots on the inside as is typical on boats of this vintage.
The boat was stored inside for the last 10 years except for the winter of 2014 when it was parked under a cover in the yard. I accidently left the engine tilted up and water froze inside the exhaust outlet leading to a crack in the exhaust output exit near the propeller. I am currently looking into replacing the lower unit with a good used lower unit, but will negotiate on price if you are interested in fixing it yourself. It is possible that a good welder could repair it since there is no fluid leakage.

Fwiw $250's a fair price for a good gearcase of that vintage.
