'nother newbie maybe need help right away
« on: April 17, 2014, 10:19:47 AM »
Howdy fellow Glassers!  I am interested in this rig but it seems to be quirky.  Advertised as a 68 Glas with an inline 4 cyl.  The guy can't really say much else about it except he hasn't run it due to the previous owner says it has a starter issue.  He hasn't tried or investigated the starter.  Looking at the pics and cross-referencing EVERYTHING I could find,  something isn't adding up.  The engine cover is kinda weird along with the wrapped single piece windshield and that funky thing in the middle I can't find that combo anywhere.  Also, a white/ivory steering wheel??  Can anyone please add some insight here?  Much appreciated.

The 1966 V-154 came with that windshield, but not in that color ...
Brochures were printed months in advance of model release and are often wrong on a number of things.
Cool boat though !

Welcome!

Cool boat. If I were to buy it I would take out that entire motor and outdrive and swap it out with a more modern (70's/80's) 140. I just don't know if it is any longer than that old 60/80hp to fit under the cover. It will be very hard to find parts for that old 60 or 80.

That boat would have come with the Mercruiser "Renault" 60/80 engine but I don't think that's what's in there now. And, as previously stated you're going to be hard pressed to get any parts for that drive system. It would be better to tear it all out and re-power it with a newer complete 2.5 or 3 liter engine & drive package.

thanks for the reply guys.  Well a little more info.  the guy bought it about 5 years from a marina and the marina said there was a problem with the starter but it runs (ran).  The guy hasn't touched it at all.  yeah the only reason I'm debating is the price is $450.00 for the boat and the trailer.  Makes me almost want to jump.  If it's only the starter, 120.00 for one of those.  But....it hasn't been touched except winterized for 5 years.  Thoughts?

Ok, honestly...for $450.00 you can find a more modern foundation for a project boat IMO.

I would pass unless it's free. It's going to be a full project. Like Doran said, look for a more modern platform. Or maybe an outboard version that's easier to swap engines.
In near mint original condition that is probably a $2500 boat. So not all that hard to find for cheap in decent condition......at least around here.

If you're up for a complete project (floor, transom, motor, out drive and interior) offer half the asking price. The trailer is probably worth that but be prepared for a lot of work and if you do it, do it for yourself. Not to flip, cuz you'll likely lose money.
