Title: Restoring Cars From The Ground Up Takes Many Hours, Just As It Does With Boats
Post by: David CVX-16 on October 26, 2023, 09:26:52 AM
Not my car, but the pictures alone remind you of the hundreds of hours to disassemble a car, clean the parts, and put them back together again.

Gregg, a Mercury restoration would look like this:

Glastronjohn, that GT 350 Mustang was worth saving. What would be your estimate of the hours and dollars spent on the restoration?

Dave, the resto was done over a period of 3 years. I was driving over the road than so I didn't have a lot of time home. I had the body work done by Chuck Gross who worked at a local Ford dealer when these cars were new. He had a good contact for parts so all body parts were NOS Ford except for the trunk lid which was salvaged from a '65 'stang. I took an evening class for  "engine machine shop" to prep the 289 and a friend and I assembled it in his garage. The rest of the mechanicals and detail I did myself. Never did figure the time it took but the receipts totaled $11,000 in '79 dollars. That didn't include the $800 I paid for it in "75.

P.S. Very nice '56 Turnpike Cruiser. That was the show car powered by a 312 with dual 4 BBLs. The production model was built in '57 and '58. '57s and '58's came with a 368ci and a single 4bbl. '58 also saw an optional 430ci with single 4bbl (360hp) or a 6 pack (400hp)

Gregg, You are right any of the old Mustang Fastbacks are COOL.
