CV16ssV8 .... Mercruiser
« on: July 22, 2012, 03:28:58 PM »
When does the Glastron-aholics group meet??  ???

I fell pray to craigslist again.  ;D Found this while I was vacationing in Wisconsin and drove home last week to get it.  A 1976 Apricot CV-16ssV8 with what I was told was a factory installed Mercruiser 888 engine package.  I have never seen one and could not find any documentation showing that the Mercruiser was ever an option.  But knowing Glastron as long as I have do know that if you ask, they will build it.  The fit of the engine cover is the only thing that would have me question that it was a factory installation.  It has teak cowling built up to allow the cover to sit above the exhaust risers as well as a teak platform at the floor to raise the cowling slightly.  It made the trip home fine.  Started right up this morning and seems to run great.  Will have to get it registered and hope to get it in the lake before I head back north again.  Still to hot down here!

Anyone have a CV on a CVX trailer?  I found a 88 CVX-16 with a trailer over in San Diago I am going to pickup for the trailer in hope to get a nice trailer under this boat.

When does the Glastron-aholics group meet??

This year it will be the 3rd weekend in August.   Are you going to take her back up north with you and on to Red Wing?
Looks like a nice little boat.  Good luck with it.

The wood sure show's the 'age' that it could be a factory install...

I am not real sure what I will do for sure.  I am going to try to make the Red Wing meet but have not committed yet.  This boat would be a great little boat to bring with me.  Much easier to tow then the others I have.

Seat are 1976 pattern vinyl.
Must be a custom ordered 1976 Apricot V8 ...

I wonder if it was a dealer modification. Maybe it originally came with the volvo but Jim-Bob came in there and said "that sure is an awesome boat! Too bad it's got the Volvo drive and not a Mercruiser. If you swap it out, i'll buy it!" Looks like they added the teak to give the extra space for the Mercruiser manifolds. Just seems like if Glastron did it, they would have changed the fiberglass cover a little to make it work.

Either way, it's cool! I love the apricot color too.

If that boat had a Volvo drive and was switched out for a Mercruiser there would be evidence around the transom shield as Volvo's shield would have had a much larger hole. That looks like an original Mercruiser install to me.

The under dash thingy is a steal angle reinforcement.  A bit hokie but I am sure it adds a lot of stiffness.  I have a set os the OMC exhaust manifold that do not have risers the will fit under the cowl but I do not know about comparability with the Mercruiser plumbing.  Rich??? Any idea if they could be swapped?  I would love to do through hull exhaust.  This thing is WAY too quiet!!!  :-)

Don't know on the OMC manifold compatibility, haven't worked on enough of them.

Any marine 302 V8 exhaust can be made to work. If you have OMC manifolds, as long as they are water jacketed you should be able to make them work. When I swapped a Merc 888 (same drive you've got) into my CVX 16, I lucked out and found some old Nicson all aluminum manifolds originally made for jet boats with the 302/351 and the fit better than the mercs into my cvx, were lighter, and I went to through hull with them. Sounds awesome by the way... ;)

You could get rid of the exhaust bellows and put a tube in. My CVX18 has a nice rumble when it's on plane. Not the same or as nice as thru-hull, but much better than with an exhaust bellows.

Another thing to think about, I would keep the risers/snails on the exhaust especially if you go through hull. My cvx sits low enough in the water that if the exhaust didn't have the risers on it I'm pretty sure water could run back into the motor through the exhaust if it was off. That's also why I have the exhaust flappers on my through hull fittings as a preventative measure.

You could probably just get some right angle tubes made and do through hull with the current manifolds with the exhaust exits a little lower.

Here is what I did with mine they ended up about 2 or 3 inches below water line so it is still quiet at idle and up on plane its not to loud in the boat. Really only hear when taking off or slowing down.

I think this has become an addiction.

Chris ...
" Under Dash Thingie ... "
OK .. The whole deck is cut out behind the plastic dash cover and mine wiggles around also.
I though I would make a "L" shaped braket to tie dash to center board to stiffen things up a bit.
SWEET RIDE Chris ...AWESOME CV no matter how it came about ...
Love the APRICOT !

Kert ...
That sounds "BAD AZZ" !

Interesting that the CV16V8's did not have the center council like the CV16SS's did.

I really like the through hull idea and have already been looking at that.  I do not have room or anything above the manifold though.  May look at other exhaust logs and see if I can find a set of Hardin Marine manifolds that have a aft exhaust design rather than the standard riser.  Old School flat bottom through hull type.
