Would like to change the impeller on the 88 SPL but without a manual showing how to disconnect the shift rod and not having any experience with this style of lower unit I'd like to get some opinions from the staff here.
I've changed them in the past on smaller outboards with both mechanical and electrical shift and it wasn't a real issue.
Is it worth the hassle or just pay someone. I know that lower unit has to be quite a load to handle when reinstalling.
Let the suggestions begin.
Speaking of manuals, does anyone use the online manuals that you download for a price and if you need to, print a page for reference? Sounds pretty good to me.

If I remember right the shift linkage is under the carbs somewhere attached by a rod from the lower unit and a cotter key.

Mine '94 60 HP 3 cyl is under intake/block on right side attached by a rod from the lower unit and a cotter key, like Jeff said.

After some poking around I figured out how to disengage the shift rod. I'm assuming that since the shift rod has a slight "S" bend in it at the top that it's fun to get it through what I assume is the rubber seal just under the lower cowl cover on the pivot point of the motor bracket. This should be an exciting job for the first time. I think I'll attempt it Sunday evening after I get back from the river. This way it gives me a week to get it done for next weekend.
I did a search but didn't really turn up much on the subject.

Was told ... Haven't done mine yet, this fall will be three seasons ... that it's hard to reach the cotter key under the motor... so might be another one under there.
Looked at mine when I got the motor and there was one under there on mine.
Boats still back in corner of garage so can't look/get a picture.
Searching Google ... will get back at ya ...

There are a couple of different methods for releasing the shift rod. On one method the rod is held into the clevis with a threaded bolt that removes from the port side, the other is the clevis and horizontal shift rod slide to disconnect the vertical shift rod but you have to pull a retaining pin on the starboard side to slide the rod.
The vertical rod that goes into the gearcase is screwed in inside the gearcase, but it isn't supposed to be tight. This is an adjustment to properly set the height of the link at the powerhead. DO NOT turn the rod in either direction when removing or reinstalling the lower unit or it could throw off your shift adjustment.

Remove the 'air silencer' (plenum?) cover then the base & raise it outa the way. Add light. Bolt/pin is right there under the carbs.
As Rich mentioned try not to turn or disturb anything. If it were me I'd remove the prop beforehand. 'Less things move the better.

Done. Did it in under an hour and played on the river this evening. While I had the lower unit off I changed the water intake screen as mine was a little broken in spots after 15 years. Damn it was hot, though. Just the other day it was 103 with the heat factor, (humidity) Miss the cool water in Austin.
