Title: Dad's new "old" boat
Post by: Jason on March 31, 2012, 09:08:46 PM
Not a Glastron.....but still a boat, old, and cool!

Dad picked up this beauty today.

1962 Scott Flying Scott Deluxe 17'.

Scott's were made by McCulloch from 1961 to 1963. This was their top of the line boat. All original with exception to the interior vinyl and motor. Trailer is original too and is also a McCulloch brand trailer. Some really nice and neat features on this boat. Seems to be ahead of it's time for 1962.

Motor is a 1971 Mercury 80hp.

VERY VERY COOL !
Cool boat run in your family Jason ...
When I was young (mid 60's) our neighbors had a 25 foot Scott cabin crusier with a 75 HP Scott on the back.
Have never been able to find a picture of it in family photos or searchs on the internet, it was white and light blue.
I think Scott's were made in Mpls.

Will he be out for a run with us this summer ?

Amazing to find a 50 year boat in that pristine condition. The features are unique and very interesting. I followed the Scott line growing up and would spend hours looking at the motors in the brochures. Congratulations to your dad on this rare find.

That is one sweet boat. Gotta love the way that split bow hatch opens and the boarding ladder attaches to the front. Never seen anything like that. They were ahead of their time and had cool usable features.

Red Fish boat company made the Scott boats.  Interesting history at this link.

That is interesting. This 1958 Red Fish sure does look familiar!!!

Bob Hammonds response to this boat: “you know, that is one of the things that still burns me about this business. The Walters brothers took one of our boats, puttied it up and pulled a mold off of it. Added a little bit here and took a little off there and went into production just like that! Planned obsolescence had very little to do with the changing of our styling from year to year....we were trying to keep ahead of the copies that were coming from everywhere!”

So if I understand this all, McCuloch owned Scott and hired Red Fish to build the Flying Scott???? Crazy.

McCulloch bought Scott outboards in 1957 according to this history of Scott Atwater outboard motors.

Too bad the Scott line of boats only lasted a few years.  Makes them even more of a collector item !!!

That Shark Capri is kind of cool looking

I've never seen a Capri. It is cool with all the hood scoops. I've seen a few flying Scott's, but none with that black thing on the back.

My dad growing up in the 60's has a lot of experience with the old Scott motors on the house boats on trips in Voyageurs National Park............... He is not upset at all to see the original motor to be gone! An OMC V4 would have been better. At least the cover would not have been cut to get it to fit under hood. oh well, the old merc seems to run real nice.

I'm with your dad. I wouldn't have a Scott, except on that boat. I won't have another Merc either. This is the poorest designed POS i've ever seen.

Jerry, if Carl Kiekhaefer were alive and heard you say that, you would be in big trouble. Carl Kiekhaefer would hang Johnson motors over bonfires and watch them melt. Dealers were expected to chant with Kiekhaefer slogans like "kill the enemy."

If Ole Evinrude were alive he would be 135 and ROFLHAO.
No heads, so there's no way of raising the compression,
The reed valves are around the crankshaft. You have to pull the whole thing apart to change them (decided to run the stock ones this year)
Mid section is 3 pieces. Just looking for a place to leak.
There's a big rubber block or something under the water pump that can curl up and leak.

You can't run them without a jack plate because they're too long,
You can't run the stock motor mounts, they shake too much and chine walk.
The stock fuel system is a joke.
There's like 7 mounts for the shroud. (all of mine were broken)
#1 cyl is so far from the water pump it runs hot, and #6 runs cold.
I'll take an OMC any day.

I'm bound and determined to make it work, and I got over $1,000 into it already. It does look good on there.

Appreciate the running engines you get for free Jerry, there are "starving" boats on craigslist that would love to have that engine!  ;)

WHOA

I love the motor. It will be the Star of this boat. I don't want to tick everyone off, but if you have worked on both OMC and Mercury you will understand what I'm saying. Somebody lost a lot of sleep designing this thing, and they should have gotten some sleep and done it right. Maybe one of our "super Techs" want to get in on this.
As far as "Free" I still owe Red for all the extra work he did to it before I picked it up, and I have put around 4 Grand into it so far (including picking it up) and have a couple grand more to go, not to mention hundreds of hours labor. TNSTAFL  I just hope after all this work making a "one-of-a-kind" it works, and looks, the way I think it will.

Get Real  Jerry, the $475 you spent on cigerette's at the Indian smoke shop in Oklahoma don't count, or what you spent at the casino.

Seriously ... everyone knows I done a Lot of work on that boat so you would have something you could be proud of, but it still needed to be finished up when you picked it up, but reading your post here, don't have Any reflection of gratitude, at all, just complaints, about my work and efforts, and friends of your's, and mine,  have relayed to me your statements to them that I gave you a $500 bill for a "free" boat when you picked it up, which was actually $478, that you said "just put it on my Tab"

I have known you for several years, made a couple meets with you, and I gave you that boat because you are the only one that has ever said that you liked the concept, and, my thinking,  that you have not had a brought a boat to to any meet in the last three years that would make a river trip with-out having to be towed in, I wanted you and Dottie to have something to make a river trip, be proud of, Dottie is a Sweetheart, and when you took that boat from here, all it needed was to put seats in it, hook up that 150hp motor, install a steering cable, and go have fun, not a show boat,  but all the rest of the work you have done on this baby is on you, and you've done some good work, but it was'nt bad when it left here, and I got pic's to prove it ... and by the way ... I went a little over board myself, before that baby left here,  I had bought you a trailer, the 150hp motor, that you preferred, and a jack plate, centered and mounted according to spec's, and Yes .. you didn't request any of that, I done it for you and Dottie, because me and the Fox Like'd you two, or course, we haven't been around you that much, but our hearts were in the right place.

Live with it !
