Well it's begun... I've had a list of things I have wanted to do to this boat since I got it 6 years ago! This past weekend I knocked a few of those off.
-New carpet. Found this stuff at Home Depot and I personally think it matches better than the old stuff.
-New Stereo and Speakers (which came out of a demo derby car!!)
-Epoxied in depth Finder Transducer
-I also pulled the motor. Figured since it's out, i'll replace the trim hoses and a few leaky gaskets on the motor.
-Next will be the hull which has many nicks and could use the old 3000 grit wet sand.
-Clean up the aluminum trim
Floor and Transom looked great after removing the carpet and engine.
Oh yea, stupid lag bolts sheared off for the front engine mount to the floor so I had to hack that block off and glass in a new one.

Looks good Jason. Was the old carpet glued down and did you glue down the new stuff?
I tried carpet tape on the V175 and am not happy with how loose it is. I may have to go with glue, at least in spots.

The old Carpet was glued in and came out pretty nicely. I had to smooth out a couple areas before gluing down the new stuff. I took the entire gallon to do the new carpet and seems to have held it down nicely. The glue I got came from Rockford Supply in Brooklyn Park. I think it was about $38. Stinky stuff!!

Outdrive needs to be gone through too now. Found some water in the oil so I'll have to give Jim's pal Dan a call!

I took the entire gallon to do the new carpet and seems to have held it down nicely.
Guess I'd better go back and get more, I only bought a quart to do mine! (The carpet is just laying in there now, didn't want to make it permanent until I was happy with the seats.) Outdoor carpet glue, put it on with a notched trowel Jason?

Thats what I did in the last few boats I put carpet in. Lay it all with glue smooth it out and then the next day come back and press it all down again as the glue really tacks up after a day.

Exactly what I did.
I am sure you can use other glue then the stuff I used too. It was only sold in the gallon where I got it.

Got my carpet and glue at Menards last night. A gallon bucket was 13.00.

So you were able to get carpet long & wide enough to do it in one peice ?
Old carpet was seamed in front of seats .

I dont remember what glue I used in the V163 but when I pulled the carpet out of the bildge area, it pulled out some glass too. That was why I stayed away from glue this last time. Maybe some is less sticky or doesnt get hard?
Just dont put down too much or use a trowel with too wide of notches or the stuff will come right through the carpet.

The glue I used was pretty thin. It is actually designed to be used in a sprayer so the the trowel didn't do much good in that respect anyway.
Gregg it was all one piece. Home Depot sells it in a 12' roll. I got a piece 12' by 10' which was perfect for doing the floor and front and back panels. My old carpet had a seam right across the middle of the boat.

I went into the store thinking I was going with the 12' wide single piece as well. (The preferable way to do it IMO) Once I got back in the carpet dept. I found they had 6'x8' pre-cut on sale for $18.86 each, and the "overly-frugal" Mark took over. Two pieces, one split for the sides and one for the main floor, did the trick. If you cut the edges carefully, they're (almost) hardly noticeable.

Wow way cheaper then the stuff I have and it is not superior quality as far as I am concerned, but the main reason I bought it online was to get the larger chunks and avoid any seems. Yes you can do it so its almost unnoticeable but I preferred not to deal with it. It was available in 6' and 8' widths and you ordered it lenghtwise by the foot. I paid close to 100.00 however.

I wouldn't say the stuff I got was cheap either. It was about $140 for the 10' x 12' piece. But, when trying to keep the boat as original looking as possible and with planning on keeping it for a lifetime, $140 all of a sudden didn't seen so expensive. I am very happy with how it turned out.

Laurie picked ours up at Rockford Supply as well for the GT.
same glue, $38 a gal and i think the carpet was around $100, really nice stuff though.

Yes, not cheap but compared to what other things cost, not bad. I like the texture of the new carpet. Its nice your old stuff came out in one piece so you had a pattern.

New trim hoses installed, engine got new gaskets, fresh paint, and back in the boat.
Next is the dead man switch which every one of boats should have in it.

I will be installing a kill switch after catching air at red wing this year. Boy am I glad that did not happen to us when we crossed that pleasure boat wake!

Good work on renewing you boat Jason. I have a dead man's switch but never use it, but that should change. Also I should install a bilge pump.

David, didn't you have a story from a guy you sold a prop too. That he got thrown out of the boat and his boat kept going across the lake? If I remember right, he lucked out and everything ended up ok. It was that story that sold me on installing one of these. It's one thing to kill yourself falling out of the boat but another sending a torpedo across the lake killing other people.

Both my Glastrons have a dead-man switch, a bilge pump, and Okie-Dokie has a water/fuel filter because it has a built-in tank, and I always wear my PFD, There is just no reason not to. Murphy was an optimist.

Jason, you have a good memory. Yes, he lives in Iowa and was trying the 2-blade bronze prop I sold him. If I remember correctly, the motor clamps were not tight and the boat got out of control and went into a pattern of violent movements. Threw him overboard. He and the boat were okay, but it sure scared him. He is the one the runs a 1500XS Merc jacked up on a Glastron Contender that does about 80 MPH. He is active on the Mercury Outpost site and rebuilds Mercury in-line sixes.
I was thrown out of a 11 foot racing runabout at 35 MPH that hit a wave at an angle and the boat continued close to the swimming area.

It appears this guy WAS using his? Looked like he ended up pretty close to the motor.
Sometimes I use mine but not always. I usually do at Red Wing when running in the group and its choppy.

-Outdrive resealed/new shift shaft
-Got it wet sanded last night 1000/3000.
Now I just need to figure out how to wash this thing and start buffing!

Maybe windex and a roll of paper towel? (Or one of the "waterless car wash" products I've seen at the parts stores.) Growing up in Iowa there were a few places with indoor wash racks like car dealerships or some of the nicer auto shops, any of those around you Jason? I admire your determination to get it done, seems a shame to have to wait for warmer weather to continue. ;)

Your boat project is looking good. It reminds me of the 73 cv16 I had before the 78 Cvx16. Can't do much my way either. The Friday night snow storm dumped 32 inches on me. I'm glad I made the steep winter cover frame out of PVC. Snow just slides right off.
I pulled the factory carpet out of mine in November I didn't like the shag style. Contemplating what to get for carpet for my Spring project.

Jason, try hot water to wash down the boat. I try to wash my small car once a week at the end of the driveway using the hottest of water in a 5 gallon bucket and a sponge. The water cleans the dirt off before freezing, and vaporizes.

Boat is looking great. That's the only green I like.
Maybe a future project for those of you that live up north. I'm in Louisiana so we don't get snow for sure but we do get the cold snap a few weeks here and there. Either way I still have to bathe the dogs and clean up.
When I built my house I had the plumber install a hot water faucet next to the standard water faucet on the outside wall near my driveway. I have a section of heater hose set up in a "Y" and I can mix the water to from cold tap to about 130 degrees. Works great for projects and my dogs look cool walking around with steam coming off their backs after a bath. Warm bath, towel dry and back inside the heated shop. The hot water and some cleaner makes short work of any greasy job.

Jason, how did you do the wet sanding. By hand? Air sander? Etc...? I did some wet sanding on the CV23 by hand last year, but not really satisfied with that and think that it could look better but my arms and shoulders just gave out. I'm looking for a better way, but I don't have a compressor that will run an air sander.

With the way the finish looked on that, I never thought you'd need to wet sand or maybe already had once before? Sure will "pop" now.
I have a garden hose in my attached garage and I added a floor drain when building for washing cars but its not hot water. No water out in the shop. I don't want to heat that all winter.

It never NEEDED wet sanding but it can never be too shiny. There were some spots that were kind of ruff feeling where the clear is beginning to break down. I want her to be nice and smooth and shiny!
I used a random orbital electric sander to do the wet-sanding. Made quick work of it.
I did my V172 by hand and that took forever.

How about a run down on the grits you used? Since it was nice to start with, you probably didnt have to start out with anything very heavy. And did you use any compound, water or what?

Started with 1000 then 3000. Now I need to buff. I probably didn't need to use 1000 though.
On my V172 I started with 600 then 1000 then buff.
But Gregg raves about 3000 so I had to try it. His boat does look awesome!

Looks good. My cvx has a great shine too, but contemplating with just a good wax to keep the sparkle it has. Only area that could use a compound I think is the rear top where the original cover didn't cover. You can see it in the calendar picture. Mainly the 2 rear corners just before the teak strips.
I have 30 inches of snow and its 42 out. Perfect day to be working on these, but can't get to it.

I have to admit after washing the boat from wet sanding and seeing all the little scratches I got nervous. But now after hours of buffing with two different compounds and foam pads and then a final coat of 3M marine wax I can now know what this thing look liked new. If you thought it looked good before, "the 3000 treatment" made it look amazing. It looks wet and is as soft as a babies butt! Thanks for borrowing me the 3000 kit Jeff!
Now I just need to find some sun and open water....

Let me grab my sunglasses before I go blind! Nice work. As an old prop polishing man, I need to expand my product line. White Bear Boat Works (Mike) polished the bow of the CVX-16, but the rest of the metalflake needs work.
Jason, don't run into your boat this year and spoil all your hard work with the bad-brakes ATV. LOL

Let me know which 3m products you used for wax. There's so many to choose from and I just need a compound for the rear transom area near the teak strips that is a little bit faded and a good finish wax for the boat.

I used a yellow 6" foam buffing pad along with this Imperial compound to take out the 3000 scratches.
Then I used a grey 6" foam buffing pad along with the Finess-it II compound to polish. (This stuff is really nice. Buff's out real well and gives it the wet look.
Then I finished it with this 3M marine wax for protection.
