Title: CV16SS 140 rebuild
Post by: Jason on July 20, 2015, 12:10:09 PM
I pulled the 140 from the CV16SS last fall. Finally got it to Sampson Racing Engines for a full rebuild.

Work will include a full rebuild. Actually will end up similar to Brandon's 140 with the newer style flat top pistons. Will also have a hotter cam, stiffer valve springs, performance machining to valves and seats, Entire rotating assembly along with flywheel will be balanced, ARP bolts, hone, hone align, decking, resurfacing, new oil pump, new timing set, tapped crank to hold front pulley on better than the factory press fit, ect.

Head was magnafluxed. No cracks!

Also upgrading to the Delco Voyager ignition system (no petronix for me!)

Very nice Jason. A little more than I had done, I went back with a stock cam shaft. I will be interesting to see what kind of numbers you put up once it is done!

Edit, I got rid of the pertronix and went back to points and condenser. I also want to play with my timing and go from 4 degrees BTDC to 2 degrees BTDC. I think she has more to give on the top end.

That will be an awesome running machine when its done.
Ha...
the twins are gonna have to wrestle to see who get to drive first.

I picked up a used voyager system used with all the wiring, coil, ect to plug it right in. Price is not bad.

Really won't be too much left of the original motor other than the block, head, and crank.

That is a good system! I want to put one in phoenix eventually, but it is going to have to wait until the CVZ is done.

Nice man! That's gonna be a healthy rig!

I love your CV man. Has to be the cleanest CV I've seen. And that green is insane... pops so great on that boat.

Will the CV16SS be done in time for the Glastron meet, and which boat are you bringing?

Won't be done for Red Wing. Bringing the CV23.

Had to Google " Delco Voyager ".
Thought you were getting another derby van ... LOL

Are we lookin' at another Pickle rocket ?
I love the old school look of the CV's ... and even more with modern power !

Any goal for MPH with the increased horsepower?

Any goal for MPH with the increased horsepower?

I don't expect too much as it takes a lot of power to go a little faster but If I can hit 50 i'd be really happy!

FYI, my 1980 16SS hit mid 40's with ideal conditions.  Great boat, decent mileage, reliable once I got the bugs worked out.  Wanted faster so cvz was next.  Maybe yours will hit 50 with a fresh powerplant.

Well, with the fresh rebuild on Phoenix's 140 we were able to achieve 48 mph on the gps a couple of times. So 50 mph is not out of the realm for your 16ss

With the old motor my top end was 46.8

With the old motor my top end was 46.8

with my old 120 my top end was 43

46.8 wow! Yep 50 should definitely be reachable. 50 mph is still my goal with phoenix, but with her first time on the water being at the meet, well, I will be going easy on her. I want to keep her happy after the way last season ended. I am very nervous!

I though your old motor was closer to 50 mph then that ?

As per the Price and Spec sheets, CV is 275 lbs. lighter then the V-179 with the 140 HP Mercruiser ...

CV
boat = 775 lbs.
motor = 675 lbs.

V-179
boat = 1050 lbs.
motor = 675 lbs.

Maybe she needed a rebuild a long time ago. I've been thinking about putting the rebuilt motor on the dyno to really dial it in.

I did all my tuning in Phoenix, but I also have an open engine compartment. A dyno would have been nice, a controlled environment to test different options is a big plus. You would be able to see if there is a power difference between the points distributor and the delco Voyager system.

Got some updated pics. He's giving me the "homie hookup" on the heads. He wants to get as much power as possible on this little 140.

They'll be nothing left to do on the Pickle. Brand new boat.
So it looks like Jake is still tied up with your motor....

Is Ron Flood (Cedar Machine) doing the machine work for Jake? It looks like his shop. The guy is very meticulous! He did my heads. You have to take your shoes off, depending on the weather, when you enter his shop. He has a chain across the access so you can not go too far. VERY clean!
I did get somewhat of a tour.

Jake is doing most of the machine work at his place but he does not have a honing machine to do the bearing saddles as shown in the last picture so he has Ron do those.

Poor boat.... I see it has cold air intake too.

So adding the cold air intake and single thru hull exhaust dropped the hp from 140 to 135.  Probably be hard to sell such upgrades wouldn't ya think?  Come to think about, it probably does sound like a tuner car a bit.

Had some delays in getting the correct can so a custom cam was machined. But she's home now!

I was gonna dyno it but no way to hook up exhaust. Guess there is a boat dyno in north branch that you hook up to prop shaft. Should have it water ready by next weekend. Got two little time-sucks at home getting in the way of boat time.....

Yeah, your boating/free time will drop significantly for a while...(totally worth it).  Then, it'll free up again until sports start.

Not a total success. Used distributor I bought had a bad module. Would only run with timing jumper wire installed. Contacted eBay seller. New module on its way. Did run it for 20min. To break in the cam though.

Got the ignition figured out. Took it out in the rain today. (You go when you can when you got twin infants!) ran good. High RPM engine noises are gone. Performance is not a whole lot different but a little better. Got 47.2.

What prop and rpms are you running Jason? Oh and what timing did you set is at? I thing my 140 is at 4° btdc. I didn't like how it idled at the books recommended 6° btdc.

23p LASER II. 4500 RPM. The Delco Voyageur idles at 12BTDC/25 fully advanced. My engine builder thinks it should be running at about 32BTDC at fully advanced. So I got some experimenting to do yet......
