Off Topic - Gas lines in South Dakota
« on: February 25, 2011, 10:17:54 AM »
Took a 5 day Snowmobiling trip to the Black Hills last week. My first time out there, beautiful area. This was the line at the pumps to gas up @ Trailshead Lodge south of where we were staying.

This was late saturday afternoon in Spearfish canyon just as the storm started to hit. We left that night versus the next morning to try and beat the storm. Without a doubt the worst driving I've ever done while pulling a trailer.

Looks like a blast Kip. Nice trails there I imagine?
I can not beleive I have been out only once, for less then an hour....in a blizzard. This year of all the years, I should be racking up the miles.
Still time to go. Maybe tomorrow.

Great pics!  I often wish I lived in a region where I could come home from work and hop on a sled, or a boat and go for a ride.  Maybe someday.   I did get a chance do go sledding down east in Nova Scotia a couple of weeks ago (first time on a sled in over 20 years) and we had a blast covering a couple of hundred miles a day.  I did not have the fancy hair on my helmet though :)

12 of us came in from across the country.  Myself and a friend drove up from Phoenix and the others came in via air into Salt Lake City and Bozeman, mt.  Noe of the guys had a friend how has the local rental shop and got a great deal on rentals, sleds and all the gear.  The head dress?  That was my brother's idea.  Being we were all renting equipment, clothing and sleds, they are all the same.  So I picked up the mohawks at a cycle shop so we could tell each other apart.  Package said they are guaranteed to 200 mph! The attach with suction cups.

This is the garage at the house we rented .. a 6 car garage now filled with rented  sleds.

This is looking out my bedroom window ... Nothing but SNOW!

This would be by the front door. ... we come in through the garage.

Geez Ross that's a pretty good day. Should have kept going and made it an even 200! ;D
Hey the trails in the Black Hilld were some of the nicest I've ever ridden. We spent a lot of time boondocking in the woods though which Is what I enjoy the most.

Yeah I felt up to riding more but one of the plastic screws that holds the helmet screen on fell off somewhere so it was a bit irritating having that flapping so I headed home. I was getting a bit worried about my fuel level at one time too because I went out of my way to North Branch where I thought I'd be able to get gas, but Nooooo. Trails stay outside of town so I babied it back to where I knew there was gas.  Trails were pretty beat up/lumpy in spots then great in others. Boondocking is fun but not when you're alone. If I got stuck, I'd be a bit screwed.  :P
A little sore today.

We finished up our 3 days of riding yesterday and returned the sleds and am now on the road headed back to the desert via Salt Lake City and Laughlin, NV.  Going to see if I can swing by Andy's cave on the way through and say hi to who ever is there.  We logged just over 250 miles in the 3 days and blew up only one of the 12 sleds!  Cracked a piston on one of the 600 sleds about 10 miles from the highway.  Tried to limp it back but found a tow strap on a passerby and pulled the sick sled down latter finding out what had happened internally.  They had new pistons in it and had it rented out again the next day.  Managed to get myself out of trouble a few times as I stuffed in the powder a few times.  Did manage to keep it track side down all day!  Powder riding is great but kicked my butt!

Looks like a blast Chirs. Especially with a group...just in case you get stuck. Blew a motor huh. Beat the snot out of it?
Forgive me but I think those sleds look odd. A track with a seat on them but that long track helps keep you from sinking I guess.
Mass quantities of fun in any case.

Actually, they do!   :o That was one of the tricks that the Rental sled's reps told us.  When stuck on an incline in deep powder, roll the sled sideways and it will not do any damage to the sled and once the sled is righted the track sits on firm snow again.  Just don't stand down hill from it!!!  That was my brother in that case.  He rolled it over and was on it again and out of there in no time.  I was amazed even after several roll overs by many riders on hillsides not even a windscreen got damaged.

And when headed down hill and you loose your footing on the sled ... just hang on!  This guy had a long walk through deep snow to catch up to his sled!!
