Project Scimitar 2

Project Scimitar

So the work on the Scimitar began today. For once it was not ripping other boats apart as donors!

Shrom CVX-18 stopped over to lend a hand, which was good, as the extra hands were a big help, and he ran to get some tools as well. As expected, there were some bolts that did not want to cooperate, so we ended up cutting the pivot pins, and having to fight a few other bolts, but the drive is off now. And honestly, I know that some guys are running these Volvo drives for nostalgia, but considering the lack of trim, the reverse linkage set-up, and the overall design (too many things to corrode and become impossible to take apart after a few years) I am glad it will be Mercruiser in the end, and obviously the Bravo will be much stronger.

The motor is ready to pull, and should be out in the next few days. Also, I had a chance to remove the interior and look at the floor and stringers, and as I suspected... lots of rot! and, some patches that were less than impressive. this hull will be split and completely rebuilt. I will post more about that as I get to it.

What a shame that someone let it get like that. Oh well, a second life for it is coming. Looks nice on the outside. That is going to be cool with that big block in there.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you there. It will be nice when done though with that BB Bravo drive.

Got some good info and solid advice from OleRed today, so I have a good plan of attack for this project.

Hoping to get the motor out in the next few days, then I can finish removing what's left of the Volvo drive. After that I will be getting ready to take the top half of the hull off. Hoping to get the new transom, stringers and floor in fairly quickly, then I will be past all the tear down, and into the rebuilding stage, and that's where I do my best work, and start puting in serious hours on getting it done. Will it be ready for the meet? Doubtful, but, anything's possible!

I found some interesting things so far... When I removed the floor patch (pressure treated, not good!) I found rotted stringers that someone had bolted 2X4's on either side of with large carriage bolts, and had strips of lenoleum between the floor patch and the stringers. Not sure if they were trying to protect the rotted wood, or the treated...? The glass peeled right off it, and the treated wasn't glued down, and was installed with drywall screws! Also found a 2X3 just laying in the hull under the floor.

So the rest of the floor is out up to the kick panels, the interior is on the burn pile, and I am ready to get the rot out!

Ahh ... the 2x3 was sposed to be 'flotation', dontcha know.

Feel yer pain. Evidently the craftsman who 'repaired' your boat went to the same school as the genius that fixed mine. I am familiar with the carriage bolt/scab/drywall screw method now too. (The linoleum must be something new?) Oh well.

Hey yer sittin on a pile of potential there Wex. Can't wait to see it come together. Carry on.

I have been looking forward to this project for a while, and now that the trailer is under it, seems like things are happening quickly. the Scimitar has a date with an overhead crane tomorrow night. that will get the motor out of the way, and I will be able to finish removing what's left of the Volvo drive, and start really tearing into this baby and getting ready to split the hull.

The motor came out with no issues and is one less thing in the way. this weekend I will finish removing the Volvo transom assembly, and get the rub rail off, and loosen all the interior panels where they are fiberglassed into the hull, so that I am ready to split the top half off. not exactly sure where I want to do that yet, I have a few options, but I want to have as level of a floor as possible, and need heat, with no open flames, due to the fumes. hopefully I can get it set up somewhere soon, and get to work on it. getting the structure done and the top half back on will allow me to really get moving on this thing. looking forward to that!

Sunny and mid 50's today made for some decent progress. Removed what was left of the Volvo transom assembly. That actually went fairly well. Then removed the floatation boxes, can't imagine any easy way to do that. All the floor is out from the transom to the kick panels, and the starboard and center stringers are out to the kick panels as well. We are expecting up to 2" of rain tomorrow, so I set up a step ladder behind the boat, ran a 2X4 from between the t-tops to the ladder and strapped it together, and tented the boat. If you want to make progress, I guess you need to be willing to do battle with the elements!

Thanks Hyperacme, I appreciate it. Still don't know why I can't post pics, but glad you guys will help so I can keep everyone updated, share the project, and get some input and opinions. I'm sure no one is as excited about this project as I am, but hopefully some will enjoy seeing it come together.
