I have decided not to find an engine for my v174 but instead a found a 74 glastron on craigslist outboard motor transom good and floor good all it needs is a carb cleaning its at 16 foot with a 85 merc talk to the guy this morning and will sell it for alot cheaper then he as it. It needs new seat which i have a radio, and my dukes of hazard horns which i have. So please keep your fingurs crossed and hopfully by the weekend i will have her home.

What year is your V-174?
I am going to look at one tomorrow.
Is your stern drive good?
The boat I am looking at is a 165 MerCruiser believed to be the 1970
The owner is an old man a little hard to talk to his wife answers most my questions in the background.
He tells me it turns over but will not fire.  So I do not know if it runs or if the drive works.
I hope to pull the plugs, if it turns over I would feel better, can get a little feel of compression I would feel better, if the propeller turns I would feel better.
It is going to sell this Saturday at an auction.  After I look tomorrow it will be easier.  But without knowing if it runs or has a working drive.  I can?t risk much.
If I knew you had a good working drive that may be for sale and are giving up on your boat because of the motor I would feel better.

Wait a minute...that's the parts boat?  That's beautiful!

Ok...what am I missing?  Needs an engine? and what else?

There was a Mercruiser 4 Cyl here on CL in Des Moines for like $200.00 is that what you need?

Anytime I hear "It just needs a tune up" I can count on a major overhaul. Don't trade an upset stomach for Cancer. Be careful Tom.

You could probably get this for the same price as you're going to spend for that other boat...and then you've got a somewhat simliar parts boat...

I just remember from the meet thinking that was a great looking boat.

Maybe I just am out of it, but what's wrong with the boat?  I personally think your better off keeping what you know, and finding a donor motor...if that's what's wrong with it.

I almost thought it was April fools day! Tom, that boat you were looking at really didn't look worth the money either. Like Jerry says "Tune up" really means major overhaul.

If I remember right the problem with your boat was water in the oil and a outdated outdrive with no power trim.

I say we pull the motor and drive out of that boat and find a good 140 and newer outdrive to replace in it. Should be able to find something, boat in all, for under a $1000. Alan found a great find last fall for a couple hundred bucks.

After seeing Tom?s V174. I would not take parts off it if he offered.  That?s a beauty.  I believe strongly that glastrons be saved and restored.  Tom I would slap you upside the head if you showed me that boat and told me you were going to scrap it out.  Forgive me all but I asked the question about parts because I am looking at a 174 and my need parts.  But not from that boat!!!
Tom sorry if your boat has given you trouble.  And if it is your wish to give up on her.  I hope you do find a boat that starts and runs that you can enjoy without the stress.  But that is not scrap.  Keep it or sell it to a club member.
