Some sad news
« on: January 28, 2012, 08:57:42 PM »
Finally got around to investigating why my motor ran like crap last time out. Got 105 psi in the top port hole. 125 in the other three. Dang! Milky substance resembling a 'mudslide' on the plug? Hmm. Me thinks bad head gasket, or worse?

Have already begun annointing the bolts on the offending head with PB Blaster.

Man!? I need this like a hole in the head! Pun intended ...

Doug, the news of low compression in one cylinder has to hurt. Hope that upon tearing the motor down, it is just a minor, inexpensive fix.

Hate to hear that Doug, I too hope it's something simple (=easy and cheap) to fix.  Sounds like water in the combustion chamber?  Joe Poole (Ferguson Poole Marine) has been helping me get O.E. and aftermarket OMC stuff, if you need a good source.  (Most folks think of him for Merc only, like I used to!).  Keep us posted, would ya?

Well it looks purty bad y'all. Cylinder wall is eroded all the way to the sleeve. Gasket leaking there. I think this one's a goner.

Can't imagine it rotting away like that. This motor was rebuilt from the crank up in '07 and religiously flushed with fresh water after every use. Wtf!?

Not a very happy camper right about now ...

Not looking too good there bro. Perhaps that's something a welder can build back up and resurface. In a pinch when I've come across pitting along the cylinder wall or head surface I've used some MarineTex to fill in the holes but I haven't done anything as extensive as what you've got there. Is your engine supposed to have those little black rubber tubes shoved in the water jacket to act as water diverters? I've seen a lot of OMC's that did.

Ya they go here Rich. Solid rubber in this case. Too bad it didn't go on the other side, mighta supported the cylinder wall ...?

Corrosion can always find a way to ruin a perfectly good motor.

The problem there isn't the sleeve which is steel but the mating surface that the head attaches to around the sleeve which is aluminum.

If the cyl got trashed from the water intrusion I wouldn't bother attemting to fix it.  I would just find another powerhead or motor.

If the cyl is still good you can take it to a welder and they can build that area up that corroded.  The aluminum won't weld into the sleeve so you don't have to worry about that.  Then you just have to level that area out after it is welded.

I did a similar repair to an old twin cyl merc and I just used a sanding block to level it out the best I could after the weld.  Then I just used some RTV sealant along with a new gasket and it worked for years.  I would just worry that some other areas of the block aren't far behind that one.

Yeah I hear ya Greg, how far along is the rest of the block. To tell the truth I don't think I wanna know ...?

Yup the cylinder is scored above the exhaust port so the motor's gonna have to come apart anyway. And if that's the case I don't think it's worth it?

Serendiptitiously I installed a bimini at a local marina this morning and spied a dusty 130 looper buried in the corner of the shop. Asked my buddy Donnie the service manager what was up with it. He couldn't remember exactly but didn't think it was terminal. Pretty sure the customer bought a new motor, said he'd look into it.

[Start pipe dream here] Wouldn't it be nice if the problem were a power pack(s) or stator or voltage regulator or rectifier or starter. Or carburators even? I already got all of them parts ...  Loopers are a lil heavier than crossflows but I reckon the 40 bolt on hp would help me get over that ...

Keep your fingers crossed y'all!

Well, swung by the marina this morning with boat in tow. Donnie looked at the motor & said he could fix it. He sounded confident so I dropped it off at his personal shop. According to him the method recommended by both Yamaha and Honda is to pack the affected area of the water jacket with Marine Tex. Then grind out the passage & block sand the face. Swears he's done several that way that are still running. Being kinda a dinosaur I have my doubts but we'll see.

re the 130 loopner. Motor is indeed a runner & could probly be had dirt cheap. BUT. Steering arm/bracket rotten & busted off. $700 part from BRP, plus ya gotta pull the powerhead to install it. Part's been upgraded to stainless steel btw. Gee, wonder why they did that ...?

Motor is an Ocean Pro series which means, theoretically, it's supposed to have all kinds of 'extra' corrosion resistance built in. Hmm. (See above.) However it's really very clean otherwise, but boy is that thing big. Dwarfs the crossflow. Guess it could be my imagination but it looks a heckuva lot bigger & heavier?

Emailed this joker back on Jan 11th.

http://sarasota.craigslist.org/boa/2794797324.html

He finally got around to calling me about an hour ago. Sounded desperate. My bet is there are serious "issues" with the stringers/transom.

Me'n my lil bro are going up there Sat morning to have a look-see. Gonna haul a empty trailer c/o my buddy Steve @ Gulfliner Marine with us.

My plan is to find every flaw that I possibly can & use them to browbeat the guy into submission ...  I know that's not very nice but I really need a motor. Anybody want the hull?

Dang! And I was hopin' for 75 mph ...

Ah well, we'll see. Gonna go up there prepared. Compression tester, fuel, battery. Starting foolid, junker cables, some tools, etc.

At first I thought the motor was a crossflow but more I look it appears it's a Loopner?
