Nice day for prop testing ...
« on: June 08, 2012, 08:47:48 PM »
First off ... HUGE THANKS to Dave for the use of his props, and he went the extra mile to stand on shore and wait for me to come in, then did a "Nascar style" prop change.

AND ...
Your CVX looks ABSOLUTELY AEWSOME !
Even with a Johnson on the back ... J/K

I got to WBL early to do some more adjustment to trailer... Didn't help ... OH well ...
Took CV out with a 17P Alm. prop I got with boat and kept as back up ..

All speed readings are GPS ..

Merc 17P alm. - about 47 mph, over reving to 5500 - 5600 rpms

Dave showed up and we got started ...
Wanted to try Lazer II 22p first but we put adtpter in wrong and couldn't get it out ... so ...
on to the Balistic 22P ... but it hit the trim tab so we removed tab and gave it a shot ...

Balistic 22P 50.2 mph at about 5200 -5300 rpms, could hardly hold steering wheel with one hand when trimmed out and went in to BAD chime walking, I mean bad !
Once speed/trim angle hit about 50mph and motor was trimmed out I couldn't hold it there for more then a few seconds or I'd have been tossed out of boat ..

Next was an old Merc SS 22P prop that hit 48.9 mph at about 5200 - 5300 rpms, torque steer wasn't to bad, more then I'd like but ...

Dave took his CVX out for a spin on this test but had alarm go off so we limped back to launch. Full of oil and good stream out his pee tube ... Might just be a senseror or bad ground ...

So Dave took his CVX home to get set back trim tab and pound out adtpter stuck in Lazer II, he must have broke every traffic law in the books because he was back in an hour ...

We put the set back TT and Balistic back on and got 49.9mph at 5200 rpms with more of the same torque steer and out of control chime walking, very violent chime walk .. Both times(testing Balistic) it had a lots of bow lift.

Next was the Lazer II 22P - 51.4 mph at about 5200 - 5300 rpms, trimmed all the way it had lots of torque steer but no chime walking. Same as other props up to around 50 mph and trimmed all most all the way it had neutral steering ...Full trim and had to really hang on. At least no chime walking.
Trim tab has notiches so can only go over so far ...

Kind of forgot when/where in the order we did it but tryed one of his 2 blade props ..
2 blade 22P - 50.8 mph at about 5300 -5400 rpms, very little torque steer, but weird noise, maybe vibration, maybe just the way the prop is, coming from motor, worked pretty good and felt very smooth.
Maybe a 23P 2 blade would work ?

Also a Power Tech 22P that only did 48 mph at 5200 - 5300 rpms

Last test was the Lazer II with the set back trim tab - 49.9 mph with bad chime walking ... Don't know what was going on there ...

Some thoughts are my steering is sloppy .. I can turn wheel from the 12 oclock to the 1 oclock without moving motor.

Dave will have some props up "For Sale" soon ... LOL

Thanks again Dave ... Your the BEST !

If you run a Merc, you need solid mounts and dual helm steering. PERIOD!!!

Do it before you kill yourself Gregg

I'm jealous.  Out here at Rathbun, I'm all by myself.  I need a prop wrench and a tabbed washer so I can make my swap.  I received that bronze two blade from Don (retroperformance) and have it all polished up and making a really cool paper weight.

Gregg...  sloppy steering will mess with chine walking a good amount.  Gary Vetvic had a CSS that had loose steering and it felt like you were always fighting it.

that would be the first thing i would see if you can fix. is it loose in the front or at the stern?

Gregg, looks like you had a hard day too!

Might consider getting a new no-feedback helm and new cable. Pretty reasonable prices out there, and may eliminate the slop AND the torque steer. Not sure if you have enough hp to need a dual cable setup, depends on what ya wanna spend I guess. Torque steer screws up a nice relaxing ride, for sure!

On the up side, prop testing is a good excuse for lots of hammer-down runs! ;D

115 hp motors can't do that ...

Gregg, both you and I need new steering systems withnot play. I already told you that my V-153 had some steering play that caused violent chine walk, but eliminated by putting spacers around the bolt that connected the arm to the motor triangle in front.

Had audible warning of overheating so idled back to the boat ramp. Will bring the motor over to a Johnson mechanic tomorrow to discuss possible reasons.

Max GPS reading was 57 MPH, but that was the car.

Gregg was gracious enough to say we put the hub in wrong, but it was my fault. DAH. Sometimes I am so stupid. Brought it over to marine dealer and they used the metal sleeve to pound it out without charge - thank you Nelson Marine and Chris in the parts department.

Thanks Gregg for being so patient with the prop testing process. It is work in the hot sun with the selection of thrust washers, setting of trim tab, making sure nothing is hitting when the prop turns. And Gregg is testing a new car on the race track with every different prop, not knowing how it is going to perform. Gregg did me a favorite by testing props I never used before but indications are they never will be good, so they go on Craigslist.

The universl hub kit conversion from Mercury prop to Johnson prop did not work with the Laser II - prop too long and does not allow the Johnson nut on the propshaft to clear the hole to secure the cotterpin.

Beginning to believe that the best props are from that outboard's manufacturer - Laser II for Mercury and Raker for Johnson/Evinrude.

All in all, a great day with alot accomplished, knowledge gained, and a friendship strengthened.

I'll check on the audible code tonight and the mechanic will also know.

That 22" Laser II is the older style with the square vent holes. Keep looking.

We're talking a VRO motor correct? Should chirp once when you first turn the ignition on. Once the motor's running, a "beep beep beep" means low oil level. A "Beeeep" is the hi-temp alarm.

Sounds look a pretty good day on WBL again. We should change the name of that lake to "Lake X #2" with all the prop testing we do on it!

I agree with everyone else Gregg, get your steering figured out first.

Sounds like the Laser II 22P worked out pretty well. I think Laser II's and CV's get along nicely.

Doug Campbell, the expert on Johnson/Evinrude motors, knew the difference between the beep for low level in the oil reserve and the overheating sound. Since I just changed the water impeller and housing, and since there was a strong stream of water out the motor, that should not cause a problem. The audible intermittant beep was for low oil level, but the reserve is 1/2 full and I had just added one pint before boating yesterday. But I will fill the reserve to full and try running the boat in the driveway. Am relieved that it was not an overheating problem, then you should retorque the cylinder bolts and do something else.

But hay,  I have the 1988 115 HP Mercury as a backup.
