Talked to Scott, the Johnson mechanic and got some advice on how to test the system further to pinpoint the problem. If I decide to abandon the VRO system, they can install a fuel pump for around $95. Things to think about. Thank goodness for access to information and people who are experts and are willing to share their experiences and knowledge.

VRO pump on my Johnson was just plugged off ... no need for new/differant fuel pump.

Do you have a 2 blade 23P brass prop Dave ?
Think I could try the 2 blade 22P on another outing ?
Speed & RPM's were close and no torque steer/chime walking.

And the price is right ...

Yes, the nice thing about the 2-blade bronze props, at least my 21" pitch ones, is that they have very little torque forces.

The 22" 2-blade HI-Performance bronze prop for sale was designed for Mercury racing boats with motors at elevated heights and may not work at normal heights.

I used a 20" and 22" one on my V-153 with the 80 HP motor many years ago they performed poorly.

But with more horsepower things may be different. Both of you may test it to see how it works. Price is $180.00.

Gregg, the 23" bronze was sold to Ross. The real pitch may be lower, as Ross exceeds 5,250 RPM doing about 48 MPH.

Yo David. Considering you just rebuilt the waterpump, and there's sufficient oil in the resevoir. Simply disconnect those annoying alarms, gauges, etc ...

Granpappy Jack always said they only serve to to distract the driver ...

Doug, I'll have to think about your advice to disconnect the alarms.

Doug, how did you get the Lightspeed 22" to fit your OMC?

The Laser II with the hub adapter to OMC did not work since the Laser II's shaft was too long and prevented the cotter pin from going through the nut.

I am thinking that the Laser II would not go faster than the Raker, and the Laser II has more steering torque. You should try a Raker 24". I'm sold on the Rakers.

Has anyone seen the new Xtreme NFB steering system that just came out?  Kinda pricey, but may be worth it to those hitting the high top end speeds?http://www.iboats.com/NEW-for-2012-Teleflex-Xtreme-Reduced-Effort-Mechanical-Steering-Package/dm/view_id.961870?cm_sp=Jun2012PriceMeltdown-_-MarqueeAds-_-XtremeTeleflex

I have a teleflex you can use to see if it fits. It should. Don't use that prop for a depth finder.

Thanks Jerry ...
It's pretty tight under dash, gauges sit right on top of rack.
Posted over on the main site hoping for some feed back from other CV owners on there motor/prop set ups.
The 2 blade was so differant from other props, smooth and good bow lift it even made the motor sound differant.

My luck Dave sold the prop before reading my post ...

Doug, how did you get the Lightspeed 22" to fit your OMC?
I used Michigan Wheel's XHS (Exchangeable Hub System) part# 106. Bolted right up. Are you trying to put a washer between the nut & brass adaptor? Don't. It's sposed to assemble like so:

Remember too that all thrust washers are not created equal. I have one that's 1/2 again as beefy as some of the others. Is it fully seated on the shaft? (Duh.) If you have an assortment check em with a micrometer. You might be surprized at what you find.

Yeah guess I oughta try a Raker sometime but right now I got bigger problems. (See new topic.)

edit: Substitute "Raker" for "Ballistic". Drrrr

Doug, thanks for the information and diagram. I have seen Lightspeed props for sale for OMC motors and perhaps they make sure all the hardware is designed to fit.

I used Mercury's hub system, and I bet that Michigan's, the one you used, would solve the problem.

But my problem is, referencing to your part numbers:

Part A:  Needs to be thicker so that the prop does not rub against the gear housing (On the Raker, the lip of the prop
fits inside the lower unit gear casing)

Part C:  Needs to be shorter on the end so that the whole mechanism is short enough for a cotter pin to go through the securing
                   bolt.

In summary, I am satisfied that the Raker is a better prop than a Laser II for OMC motors. You should try a Raker 24" on your motor.

David - not that I have a ton to contribute, but I spoke with Red's prop wizard down in OKC when I had the CVZ-19 with the Johnnyrude 235.  He told me that the Raker's were the best prop for OMC outboards.  He could tweak one a bit if I wanted more bow lift, etc, but not to bother with other props and stick with the Raker.

Seems like you're confirming his opinion in your testing.

Good luck!

Mebbe mebbe not Dave. Long's you're using the correct Merc 'Flo-Torq II' equivalent. Part# 835266A1?

Doug: That is the hub kit I used. Borrowed from Don Larkey (Retroperformance).

Dorelse: The Rakers have very little torque steer, the motor does not have to be raised on the transom, and they go fast. In boat magazine prop testing articles, the Raker always did well. I have a 22" Raker for speed and a 20" Raker for loads. Looking for another Raker 22".

Prop testing week #2

We ( Dave & I ) got there ( WBL ) early (8:00) to beat the DNR/Sheriff for some high speed runs ...
Turns out no DNR/Sheriff and no high speeds !

First run was a 21P Ballistic and only got to 48. something mph and over reving ...
Changed over to the 22P Lazer II and best I could get was 49.3 mph at just over 5000 rpm's ?
Not sure if steering helped the chine walking because I never got over 50 mph !
Might go back to the old steering so at least I get over 50 mph ... LOL

Dave tryed a prop he pick up for cheap and got a few tenths of a MPH slower then his best prop so he was pretty happy !
But his speeds were down also, he'll post his top speed but don't think it was over 50 mph ...

I changed plugs, the plugs in there for last weeks run, came with boat and I don't know how old they were but I ran Sea Foam thru it and just wanted to clean every thing up before installing new plugs ... Starts much better now ... Hot or cold !

I'm gonna have to work on Dave to sell me that two blade prop ... he just won't give it up !
... LOL

We did have a pretty good time crusing around in circles at 35 mph ... Had lunch at the beach and talked boats ... weather was perfect !

Dave ...
Showed picture of your CVX to Sara and she LOVES it ... She asked me why I didn't get a nice boat like that !
