« on: July 23, 2012, 11:32:28 PM »
so im workin on my first boat (GT-150) and i say "i dont need a big mtor, 60 maybe 80"
and i have a 66 80HP johnson i figure will do... but i want trim and tilt so im all over CL for something i can make work.
then BAM... CV173, 115Hp Johnson with a cracked lower unit (hit a rock i guess) $200
what could i say
so after a 7 hr road trip to western mn
i read a post somewhere about a "glastron-aholics" meeting ;-)

Same colors on the cowl as my '73! If it is you have to be careful about which lower you buy to replace it with, I think that year is kinda unique?  (Gear housings may be the same, PowerShiftII, but water pump is double tube, other subtle differences.)

If it is like my 85 Johnson 115 HP, the shift linkage disconnects in back of the carb inside the engine. Screwdriver unscrews the bolt. Let me know if you need a picture.

got it, thanks
couldn't start it cuz the flywheel key was sheared
pulled the lower unit, started dis-assembly but was unable get prop shaft out so far.
the gears seem to operate smooth so im wondering if i can weld the housing back together.
put the key from the water pump in the flywheel and tried to start it, it will pop over but wont stay running.
the wife got a little nervous when fire cam out of the exhaust... seems like timing might be off.

The '73 is a little different, you have to undo the bolt in the center of the "bellcrank" (#12)on the linkage under the bottom carb.  This allows you to separate the two halves(Front # 13, Rear # 45), freeing up the shift rod that goes down to the lower unit.  (It's a little tougher than the single screw method on the motors after that)  It can be done without pulling the bottom carb, just takes a little patience.  Just wanna be careful you don't loose the little bushings in the connections when it comes apart!

Now that I think about it, I took the control cables off the side of the motor to get enough access to do this without pulling the bottom carb.

Not a repair manual ... but some times just seeing the parts break down helps ...

well i got the gear case apart....
the housing is cracked across where the pump fits in :(
so if i weld it, will the pump go back in ?
if it does will it be off center and cause problems.
anybody got a housing that needs a home ?

Ehh Greggs okay sometimes ...  Yo Joe if you have no intentions for it I'd be interested in how 'bad' the powerhead is. Just the block, I have everything else. If the guy ran it out of oil that'd be perfect, I got a set of 30 over Wiseco's itching for a transplant. Driveshaft would interest me too. Lemme know.
