Is it worth it
« on: September 07, 2012, 09:49:51 PM »
While on vacation in Colorado, I found this old Dorsett Monteray boat in need of full restoration.  It has a Flying Scott 65 hp motor and a Johnson kicker.  I think the last time the boat ran was in 1988?  By the time I get the boat home I would probably have $2K in it.    I know, what's it worth to me.  Just looking for opnions/advice.  (Gregg to post pics thank you)

Thanks,

Terry

A friend who had been collecting Glassics for some time told me when I first bought my FireFlite that an old boat, if it has a motor and trailer is worth $300. You put hundreds of dollars, and hundreds of hours into it, and it's worth $300.  Dorsett made a great boat. The nicest one I ever saw was Chuck Rohm's. It was professionally done with Emron, and took a trophy at every show it went to. You will NEVER get your money out of it, but it would be a fun boat.

That is a cool boat Terry. Looks worth taking on. Exterior seems to be in good shape and appears all the hardware is there too. Thats a big plus.

Thanks Gregg for posting the pics.
I think it's a cool boat also, and Nancy likes it too!  Deal maker, not breaker.
That's it Dan, point out the spare tire. Lol.  To be honest, I would rent a trailer and put the boat on it.  Just hope the trailer has a spare.
Jerry, I understand what you're saying.  That's the decision I have to make.  Like i said, plus side is, the wife likes it.
Now that I've had time to do more research on the boat, I may just pass on this one and look fop one closer to home and at a better price. Also, I still have to find a trailer to haul it back with, not to mention a round trip of almost 2600 miles. Not to mention the time to do it in the next week as winter is getting ready to set in here.  I'm going to go look at one more time before we leave.

Thanks to everyone, i'llkeep you posted.

Someone smarter than me once said... "A boat collector can take a 5K boat and make it worth 10K by spending 15K."

Fairly true!

Thanks for the leads Tim and Gregg.  After a few days to really think about the Dorsett, I've decided it's not for me for multiple reasons, logistics is probably the main reason.  I
