Electronic Ignition
« on: November 02, 2012, 09:39:42 AM »
Lets talk a little about electronic ignition.

My biggest question is more on Marine vs Automotive distributor's. I know the biggest difference is in the fact that a marine distributor can not ignite a flame in the engine compartment but is there any difference in the ignition module that would change timing or anything?

Lets say we had a Ford 460 with points and wanted to change it over to electronic ignition. Few option's:
-Install Petronixs Ignitor in points distributor
-Replace distributor with Ford Duraspark distributor and use a Duraspark ignition module or MSD marine ignition module.
-Replace distributor with an MSD all in one marine distributor.
-Replace distributor with a GM style HEI distributor (not marine).

Just looking for a few opinions from those who know the PERFOARMANCE difference between marine and auto electronic ignition.

Jason, speaking from experience the pertronix would be the simiplest install and the cheapest bang for your buck. I have sold several of those units at the Case IH dealer I work at for several old problem tractors and they have made one heck of a machine out of them.

I think he might be trying to run up his 'Posting' totals, and get to the next status level on the forum.   :D

Kind of like I just did.   ::)

MSD (Multiple Spark Discharge) is the leader in racing. they have the ability to do it right, with the right advance curve for marine use, and have a rev limiter that plugs right in. Why would you buy anything else?

Over and above the ignition itself, I found out that there are vented and non vented caps too, at least for my style flat or crab caps. Mine is none vented but thats all they used back then I believe, again at least with my style but the distributor itself has a small screen vent.
With the trouble I have been having getting plug wires and they expense of the cap (~$40.00) electonic conversion kit (~$145.00) I am beginning to wish I had just changed out the whole distributor. Too late to cut my losses now.
