We Got Rain
« on: January 29, 2013, 11:00:53 AM »
we are in the longest drought since the 1940's  we are finally getting a little rain, but we need more, this little shower only brought less than 1" but it sure feels good to get some.  There is not much "run off" to add water to lake Hefner,  the lake levels here in Okc are fed by the north Canadian river, that river is dammed up at Canton, Ok. developing Canton lake, that lake is about 10ft lower than normal, when the water is released from Canton it runs the approx 150 river bed miles to Okc, some water was released there in Canton, but the river bed has soaked up so much water that it has taken 16 days to just get a trickle of water into lake Hefner as of yesterday.

Sad that rain is a post-worthy event Red.

Hopefully you guys get soaked this spring so you can use your lift someday...

Congrats on the rain!

Ever heard of the fog day rule? It states that moisture should occur around 90 days from a day that has fog. I have been trying to keep track here and so far it is fairly accurate. So far it looks like the end of march and the beginning of April are loaded with moisture.

At least for my area!

Hope I don't sound like a kook but it just seems to me our powers that be oughta be able to run a hose from a flooded area towards a drought stricken one. Evidently they've never heard of an 'Aquaduct'? Well yes, aquaducts are a relatively new concept ...

I reckon so long's the TV or computer or 'smart' phone's still on it don't really matter much anyway ...

Doug -
Our powers that be would prefer something a little more technologically advanced.  I hear they'd like to relocate and transmit specified precipitation on a high-speed wireless signal.

A steady stream of "Okies" left for California in the "Dust Bowl" days of the 30s. It has a history of being uninhabitable. Those of us that live here with a lake in a stone's throw from home, wonder why anyone stayed to turn out the lights.

The experts, (whoever they are), say that we would be in a dust bowl situation now with this drought, but that the state is more developed than it was in the 1930's.  Oklahoma was the 48th state, prior to that it was Indian territory and so was very under developed until after the depression.  Those of you that live within a stones throw of a lake should not judge those of us that don't.

Seriously, we've been in a drought here too for about 7 years according to a DNR type I contacted. Some of the lakes near me are so low I wont go in them. I've hit underwater objects when the water was high. At the landing I use most, there used to be a tree stump off to the side of the landing, under the surface a couple of feet. Now, standing at the waters edge, that stump is taller them me.
Think we all need to do some rain dances.

It will be worse this summer. We haven't gotten any snow this winter. I have seen Lake Hefner. It's a beautiful Urban Lake, but now it's a mud hole. If you're a boater, you want to be where there's a lake. Besides I really want Red closer to us, and Barb too. I'm looking for another "Okie migration" North this time. Just throwing out the welcome mat.

Hey Honey, Dan's parents has a Great Deal, it's a thriving little farm, they raise alpaca's,  Ok ? whats that ?  Oh, they are a cute little Llama looking critters, kinda like sheep, they eat your flowers, drink out of the bird bath, poop on the lawn, spit at you when you come in the gate, and all ya got to do is shave them once a year, make a blanky, or knit a sweater, a pair of gloves, stuff like that and go sell them at a flea market, Oh No !  not the animals, the blankets, gloves and stuff ... what ! stick What Where ?

Thanks for the laugh this morning Red! Sounds like the Fox and my wife have the same allergies. That and it's 13 below this morning with -26 windchill!

Hahaha ... yeah.  Mom must've been smoking something we dreamed of having the grandkids come to her alpaca farm.  Now she's been through knee replacements and other issues ... Now they figure the lakes and trails and such are plenty of activity for grandkids.

She's got a basement full of shearings, though.  Never sold an ounce of fur.  It's all been corded, graded and bagged.  Matched up by color and just sits there.  I don't ask.

Maybe integrate some of that fur into a boat interior? Dont they have something like that on the ceiling of CV21's or 27's?  Charge extra for a comb or brush.
