I/O lower units
« on: May 27, 2013, 08:31:25 AM »
Does anybody know if a mr/pre alpha and a Gen1 are the same bottom end?

I believe they are interchangeable but the MR drive will probably have a pre-load pin on top of the driveshaft which is not used in the Alpha Gen 1.

Rich aren't the internals different, mainly stronger, as well? Seems to me they changed how the dog clutches grabbed or locked into place.

You could be right about that. The internal differences I think are minor, but externally you should be able to swap one for the other if you had to, they still function the same.

I broke something have not taken apart yet.

Took it out down the block for a short spin around the lake.

Everything was working until I slowed down to come in the no wake zone and then nothing.  No fwd or reverse .  Paddled in loaded on the trailer can shift into fwd and prop locks up like it should but will not spin(engage with engine). Pull into reverse nothing. So I assume  that something is broke down stairs as the upper is just a 90 degree transition and gear ratio.

Any ideas are welcome.

I don't think the problem is inside your lower gearcase. Two things come to mind: 1) The upper gears blew - or - 2) the vertical driveshaft broke. I've seen both happen. If the upper gears blew apart then the water pump would have stopped pumping and the engine would have started to overheat. I would pull the top cap off the drive and take a look inside. Check your gear oil first. Take out the upper vent plug and sample the oil, if it's black and really nasty smelling that's a good indication something went bad. The only other thing that I can think of is the coupler on the engine flywheel is spun but you would probably have a lot of squealing noise and some smoke from all the friction.

Blown top end gears look something like this, the gear teeth are ground flat:

If something broke in the drive you might not hear it happen. All the same I would check the condition of the oil and pull the cap to see what's going on inside. Your shift cable didn't come apart did it? When you move the control handle does the link on the drive still move with it?

No problem with shift cable, it is the new style replaced 4yrs ago.

Upper unit is a rebuilt 2yrs ago and lower was rebuilt 4yrs ago.

Oil didn't look that bad as I drained it and just a little metal shavings on the drain plug.

There was a little water in the oil when drained.

pull the lower unit and shift it by hand, I'm betting the problem is down there, water is not a sufficent lube down there, if it was in the upper you wouldn't has a good forward gear either.

Copied from the SEI website.

SEI's drives come standard with a three-year, fault-free warranty. This means that the unit is covered for any failure that requires the drive to be repaired or replaced. Run it without lubrication, crash into a stump, suck up some fishing line, it does not matter, the SEI drive is always covered. SEI believes this warranty is one of the best warranties ever offered for a stern drive or a outboard lower unit. Peace of mind while on the water is important, and SEI goes the extra distance to make sure that our products perform.

My 18 has a SEI on it and I didn't have any problems last year
I think this has become an addiction.

Careful Jason. Jeff may find a new nonboat use for a I/O unit.
