Gas cans
« on: May 31, 2013, 08:43:30 AM »
Any one been using "no spill" gas cans ?
they look impressive but i don't know I'm convinced they will hold up.
i have a 6 gal can i got at fleet farm with this safety nozzle (CARB) on it, I'm not all that happy with that deal, and the spout is too tall to fit under the splash well.
the last can i bought with the CARB thing on it i tore all the extra junk off the nozzle, and punched a hole in the top of the can for a vent, that at least made it useable.
also not sure if i want to carry that big can all the time, but considering at least a 2gal can to carry as backup.

I hate both of mine.  I swear I spill more gas than I used to.

I have an old metal one that I use for the mower/snowblower that's way better than the 'new' ones.

For on boat gas though, yeah, I have a 5 Gal. no spill one.

Ha! that's what I did too. I hate how they pour so slow. Break your back standing there for 10 minutes while pouring.

I have two Scepter 5 gallon gas tanks I use to fill the bow tank, and this year plan to use them to fill the two portable 6 gallon gas tanks on the back seat. Scepter is sold by Hannay's, Northern Tool, and Walmart for about $17.00 to $21.00. Dimensions are 11 1/2  x  9 3/4  x  15 1/2. The spout is reversable and stores in the gas can when not used. Spout is spring loaded and fills when depressed. Have not had a spill on the boat bow yet.

David -
I have the same can for the mower ... while I don't spill gas on anything, I have two minor problems with the nozzle on that can:  1.) I RARELY can pour a mower tank of fuel without getting gas on my hands - the nozzle leaks out from under the green twisty thing; and 2.) Especially when the can is full, I am wondering why the pour is so slow before I figure out I'm not pushing against the spring in the twisty thing.  Maybe it's different filling a boat where you can push the nozzle against your fill cap, but on a lawn mower I can't dip that nozzle down in the tank very far.

They are junk. Slow and typically leak when pouring. My neighbor got two and they both leak. I still have several of the older style from when the last hurricane came through. Needed extra cans for the generators.

I keep 2 gallons on the boat for emergency use. Gave two gallons to a guy on Monday when his fuel gauge died on 1/8 tank and he ran out.

Maybe just get a 3 gal. outboard tank.
If you run out just connect tank up and your good till ya get back to the gas dock for a fill ...
Lower height then a gas can also.

Yeah, good idea...Bluebell (my CVZ-19) had 2 fuel tanks, and I could switch between the tanks with a valve...that didn't work...so I removed that and put on OB quick connects on the 2 tank lines and the one line to the motor.  When tank 1 ran empty, connected the line into the full one, and off I went with another 20 Gals.

No reason you couldn't do the same with yours.

The Scepter nossles are tricky. They are spring loaded and the spring must be repressed for the fuel to come out. Also some twist thing too. One can buy just the nossle itself without the tank, which I did at Walmart.

There are a number of brands of gas tanks on the market. I chose Scepter after doing a little research. Maybe Consumer Reports or Amazon has reviews.

Well...

Thanks to a piece of tygon tuning and a thumb screw.
I think I will try a small Scepter to carry on board.

I've used replacement vents to convert all my gas cans. No more halfazz repair. Just drill or punch a 1/2in. hole in your favorite can than pop 'em in and your gas pouring woes are over.  I found them at a local race shop and paid about $2 a piece.

As usual I've found a better deal on the net. Now I don't want to hear anymore whining about slow pouring Gas. ;D

Years ago my Dad had probly half a dozen or so 5 gal 'Jerry Cans'. Think that's what he called them. Bleve they were made outa aluminum. Military style, painted olive drab, y'know like the kind carried on back of a old army jeep?

Dunno how or when Dad parted ways with those, but I sure wish I'd inherited em.
