That's what they are called.They were designed in Germany during the 1930's for military use. The US and allies copied the design during WW2.The term Jerry was slang for Germans.  I had one passed on by my dad however it was lost. One day I left my Garage with the Jerry can sitting on the open tailgate of my pickup. I had gone approx. 3/4mi. when I realized the can was left on the gate, too late it had fallen off. I turned around and headed back to the garage looking for the can. I wasn't fast enough, the can was gone.

You still can buy them in metal or plastic however they have the CARB approved spouts.
