5 gal 'Jerry Cans'. Think that's what he called them
That's what they are called. They were designed in Germany during the 1930's for military use. The US and allies copied the design during WW2.The term Jerry was slang for Germans. I had one passed on by my dad however it was lost. One day I left my Garage with the Jerry can sitting on the open tailgate of my pickup. I had gone approx. 3/4mi. when I realized the can was left on the gate, too late it had fallen off. I turned around and headed back to the garage looking for the can. I wasn't fast enough, the can was gone.
Dunno how or when Dad parted ways with those, but I sure wish I'd inherited em.
You still can buy them in metal or plastic however they have the CARB approved spouts.
Here is a metal one.
