shift interrupt switch
« on: June 09, 2013, 09:05:48 PM »
I haven't done much tinkering since we got home with my shift setup. But I had a thought. When we where riding in Hot Knots there was a trigger on the control handle to go back into neutral that seemed to act like a shift interrupt switch.

I had a thought. I don't use the trailer button on my control handle as my interrupt switch if I could not get mine to work correctly. Any thoughts on if that button could be wired to act as a manual replacement?

I've never seen it done that way but I suppose it's possible. You just have to tap into the tach signal wire, go to the switch, then run a wire from the switch to a negative ground.

I'd fix the actual problem. Way easier.

That's my plan Tim, just a back up idea just in case.

Was just reading through my cylmer manual on their shift cable adjustment procedure. I think I will read it again tomorrow and try to get it adjusted properly.

I had the lower unit shift cable replaced two summers ago on our '74 V184 with the 188hp Merc I/O (302 Ford).  I wish I would have done it years earlier.  Life is alot easier on the starter these days!

I had tried blasting lube through that cable with a motorcycle cable lube tool but it never seemed to help.

Peter cable is two years old and not the problem. The problem is my cable adjustments. I rushed it so I would have Phoenix Rising for Rathbun after getting her back from the boat shop. And I did not have a good understanding of the interrupt switches purpose. But after talking to other members about it, I now understand its purpose and function so the adjustments should be rather simple.

Ah!  Yes, that is a tough one.  It's been a few years since I fidled with that.  I borrowed the Merc manual to adjust my original cable.  I remember that the cable makes the shift, and the cable housing makes the ignition interupt.

When I decided to replace it I took it to a friend that has a boat repair shop in Garfield, MN, so I didn't have to adjust the new one.

I hope the adjustment goes well for you.

I remember adjusting the cables on the 140. It's a pain and the "perfect" spot is really hard to get just right.

This is my procedure for later designs, Alpha's without reverse lockout. Something here may be useful.
