New Prop
« on: June 27, 2013, 06:18:36 PM »
Just got this in today and hope to try it out this weekend. It's an older Mercury Laser II 25p large hub stainless for 150+hp outboards and Mercruiser I/O's. Not as pretty as my newer 23p Laser II but just want to see what it will do for my V174. If it's going to be too much prop for my engine I may offer it up for sale to the forum.

Bet that's gonna be a lil too tall Rich. But ya never know. If it is I'd suggest having your local friendly prop shop back it off an inch or so, and mebbe thin the blades some.

I got my Power-tech TR4 there and he just added 1" pitch and cupped the brass prop on Fifties Flash. They just moved to a new larger shop and are reasonable and fast.

Buzz's Marine has a shop they ship to. I have seen some of their work and it is pretty good.

Later version 3.7 liter "470" with 4 barrel Q-Jet carb, 1.81:1 drive. Currently running a Laser II 23p which seemed to perform about the same as a Vengeance 23p, topping around 4500 rpm provided my vintage tach is correct but it seems like the rpm is high compared to the speed of the boat. Wondering if I should go to a 1.62:1 drive and stay with the 23p Laser II.

In the video, I turned the sound up,  @ 2:45 sounds like more than 4500 rpms to me, but it sure don't have any problem spinning that 23, I'd think it would spin the 25 alright.  I've had a couple 470's years ago, one had the 4bbl, surprizing power, always wondered how it would have ran with a head off one of the early 429's.  I don't remember what the sticker said, but seems like 4600 rpm was max factory spec's, but that motor of yours sounds like it wants more.
When I first got the Gen II drive for Red's Go;d it was a 1.84 ratio, I ran a 27pitch PowerTech on it and it ran mid sixties, prop calculator showed 9% slippage.
I was running the 1.65 on that boat when I sold it with a 20 pitch 4 blade @5000 rpm and it ran 60 with three big fellows on board, the prop calculator say's it wouldn't go that fast, so they ain't always correct, but I know they are only general principle calculations, but sometimes they are right.

I'll try the 25p this weekend and see what it will do. If I have to my local shop has a brand new Alpha drive with 1:62 gears that I may consider and if I like it can sell the 3 year old Alpha 1:81 drive.

Finally got to try the boat with the "new" prop this evening. Went to go watch fireworks from the water. I didn't get to open her up all the way but the short amount I did run it fast was very impressive. At about 3000 rpm I was getting around 35 mph where with the other prop tach and speedo seemed to match 3000 @ 30 mph. I can already tell I'm going to have a better top end speed and the engine didn't seem to feel in the least bit weighted down. I'm off from work on the 4th so you can bet I'll be out there running the crap out of it.  I'll definitely bring the helmet cam. ;D

I have always wanted to try a 25p laser II on the CV16SS. Anyone in the group have one? Jeff?

Sounds like it may work out for you and become your speed prop. How was holeshot?

The hole shot was pretty good but I didn't nail the throttle, yet. This prop has the older square vent holes which I think help the take-off. My other prop has the newer round adjustable "PVS" vents which I had plugged so up til now I haven't utilized the vents.

So, I had the boat out today for a little while. It was a beautiful day but the water conditions sucked. It was hard to get a good run going and I think the boat spent more time out of the water than in. The most I could manage was 45mph at 4000 rpm according to my gauges. I know the speedo is accurate against a GPS but not so sure about the tach. I did get one video with the crash helmet cam. Will have to wait for more favorable conditions.

I think the fastest I got with the Laser 23p was around 48 mph @ 4500 indicated rpm. Funny I had an older pre-Vengeance Mercury stainless 23p on there a couple years ago that got me to 52 mph @ 4700 rpm and I haven't been able to achieve that since. Maybe I should try that prop again.

Very respectable speeds. What do you figure your red line is?
