That would explain why some of the engine cover on  CVX 18's I have seen have yet another layer on top.   Mine simply has two levels.   Strangely, mine has a recess for the badging.   Brandon, Doran, or other Z owners, does your Z hood have a recess for the emblums?

Not sure what you mean by 'layer'.  There's the big tall engine cover for OMC's, our smooth engine cover for Mercruiser I/O's, and a 3rd cover style as well.

Mine looks like your's with a recess for the emblem.

My 18 had the recess but I took it out when I repainted.
I think this has become an addiction.

I've counted 4 different engine covers on these boats.

The more common engine cover used on the OMC Stringer drive boats was later used on all CVX18's built from around 1985 and on.  These were used whether the boat had a MerCruiser or OMC Cobra drive. Like on Jeff's boat.

The low profile engine cover used on CVX & CVZ 18's with the MerCruiser drive until around 1984. Like on my boat.

The engine cover used on the CVX18 California Special. Pictured here.

And then even another style engine cover used on the early CVX18's with with OMC Stringer drives. I don't have a picture of that one.

I'm not sure why, but I always call that the 'batman' cover...in an ideal world, it'd be awesome to have all 3 to swap on/off as one wanted.

Jerry, that sounds mighty tempting. I prefer turbos myself but a supercharger might be an easier install in a boat

Back 20 years ago I had a Polaris 340 that was way faster than my mind. I wouldn't even want to think about running that.  Looks  good.

They do make water-cooled turbo's but I suspect they are not cooled in the sense our marine exhaust manifolds are.  A nice low profile blower like a B&M would work, maybe even a centri type like a paxton or G scroll(VW).   As an update, I finally broke down last night and filled the engine cover recess in.  It just looked too restricting in size compared to the new decal.   Now that its soon to be smooth, I have greater flexibility in the decal placement.   Painting of the top is nearing, I hope to post a couple pics then.  Considering adding even more flake to the top than the bottom, secrectly hoping its not noticable.

I did refinish the inlay area on the front of the boat, they previously painted right over the decal adhesive.   Does anyone know what the decal looked like in this area for a CVZ?  better yet, anyone know where to find one?  My CVX 16SS has a very nice looking decal there, but its recess is probably twice as long as the Z has.

Mike, they never came with a CVZ-18 decal in the bow recess. only the CVXs did. I plan on having one embroidered in a vinyl bow cover I would like to have  made when the interior is getting done. It will look like the CVX one.
