86 Mercruiser 140 internal engine parts search and questions
« on: August 20, 2014, 05:25:52 AM »

Well, I'm back at it again, and hope y'all aren't tired of me asking questions:)

I'm searching for some internal engine parts for the 86 Mercuriser 140.

I have been told that  some Mercruiser 140 marine parts can be GM 350/327 standard piston rings, connecting rods bearings.

the mains are standard 2.5 liter (like the one that came in the citation) or the one that was in the 66 chevy II, the 250 streat 6 is also the same just a extra set of bearings.

1. crankshaft main bearings ( shells )   GM4
                                                        1159857
                                                          88A532

2. crankshaft thrust bearings ( shells ) I need to post bearing numbers, and will do that soon

3. Connecting rod bearings ( shells )   5453695
                                                        GMM40C
                                                         231J43

4. I will need thrust bearings, and will get the parts for them

5 . Rear 2 piece oil seal

6 . Piston rings, not sure of the part numbers yet, standard bore 3.999 - 4.000 the rings are also small block chevy.?

just trying to get answers to these few questions, and line up some parts, thanks a for the help:)

Dwayne, I can confirm the rods are standard 350 and I believe the pistons are also. From what my machine shop told me you basically have half of a 350 engine. But I am not sure if the main bearings are the same as a 350 due to that engine is industrial production only.

Thanks Brandon
The machine shop here in town said same about pistons, rings and connecting rod bearings.
More research I need to do for crankshaft shells
Btw I have a question about your rebuild, can I PM u later?

Interesting. So the 140 must have more stroke compared to a 350 as if it were truly half that would make a 350 a 368 or 6.0. If it uses the same rods, and the pistons are the same diameter, then the crank must allow for a longer stroke.

Vary interesting...I don't think I can use the 93  3.0 connecting rods with the 86 140 crankshaft , and I don't think I can use the 93 3.0 head,  on the 86 block, unless I use the flat top pistons and the 86 140 connecting rods...
Maybe someone will chime in on this

I know the combustion chamber size is different on the heads

On my 140 it is of the 75 vintage. Originally had the dish top pistons, machine shop suggested switching to the flat top pistons. So I did the switch, and I am using the same style head that would have came on it. I don't think any of the changes has caused the engine to have the issue I am currently trying to diagnose.

Oh, your crankshafts from the 86 and 93 will be different due to the fact that the 86 has a 2 piece rear seal and the 93 is a one piece.

Just did some research also on the rods. They are all the same part number from the 70s through the 90s 140 and 3.0lx
