This glastron thing is contagious
« on: October 10, 2015, 12:44:51 PM »
So , I am flipping through the local Craigy late the other night and I see this title that says " Glastron GS 205 need it gone now " .

Apparently , Someone had a 1996 GS 205 anniversary nestled on the driveway in Orlando all summer covered but left the drain plug in . The cover was not as waterproof as they thought and with all the rain we have had all summer , the boat filled with water. Because the boat was covered nobody knew until the owner came back to town and pulled the cover to use the boat that he had a dirty hot tub with fancy upholstery. One extreeeeamly low ball offer later ... and here we go again .....

1. Much to my gals chagrin this was on the front lawn when she got home yesterday .
2,3  The other goodies ...
4.  You can see the water line YUK !
When in doubt ... Rip it out !!

HaHa....Might not be a bad thing. Anyway looks like a good find and a much easier project than I seem to get involved with. Keep us updated with your progress.

In 1996 Glastron still hasn't learned to not use a wooden floor . Of course , they probably would not recommend filling the boat half way with water either .

1.  After about 35 screws the back seat is out ...  If you look  close you can see the waterline across the battery

2.  If this engine does run I will be watching for a possible leak here ...

3.  All electrical connections including grounds will have to be gone through and cleaned

4.  Mystery oil sludge around gas tank ?? ... Of course the whole floor is going to be replaced ...
When in doubt ... Rip it out !!

Have a new starter on order ... and bought a new can of PB Blaster ..... and spraying the milk-shake stuff out of the trim assembly .

I drained the crankcase and will let the container settle for a while to see how much water is present .

The carpeting and floor is out and the water filled hull is drying . I don't know how to dry the foam except time and dry weather .

Yep ... Foam will never dry out ... replace.
Years ago I made a tent over a boat and ran a dehumidifier for two weeks ... could have ran it for two years ...
Cut it out.

OK Gregg , I cut into the foam and ?? it is dry ?? . All the moisture and rot is being held by the plywood on top of the foam . If you
squeeze the foam in water it does absorb and squeeze back out like a sponge. I will do more test spots later , but it looks like even though he hull was filled with water for like 3 months , the water only permeated to about 1/3" and wherever the plywood is removed it is already dry .   WOW I never would have guessed that !!

BTW - the best price I have found so far on 2-part poly foam Is at us composites ..$67.50 for 2 gal kits of whatever density you desire.
If anyone found better I would appreciate the info. The CV 23 is going to need many gallons . LOL

Unfortunately I can't tell if the foam in the GS 205 is 2lb. or 4lb density as I have no samples to go by yet . Gotta go rip out more plywood .
When in doubt ... Rip it out !!

The foam I put in Phoenix let the water flow right through it. I had some rain get under the tarp when I was rebuilding her.

I'm sure what was in mine was the same, and i suspect it was closed cell but it was still saturated approx 3" in from all sides.
but im sure this boat sat out side for several years, maybe the freeze/thaw cycles made it worse.
if the samples look good thats awesome.
