Title: CVX 18 Paint and interior restore
Post by: fireman24mn on March 04, 2012, 07:33:26 PM
Figured I would start a new thread with pics of the boat as I go. I will caution, as I am not good at remembering to take pics. I will try to remember. The first few pics are in the "CVX 18 On my way to look at it" thread.  First pics is the water that was coming out of the foam. There was a lot still frozen after 2 day in 70 degree garage. 2nd pics is the spray foam that someone had put in when they "repaired" the battery box what a pain that was to get out. 3rd float boxes all gone. and last pic, Jeff how did you run the fuel line on yours? Thinking that I could just uncoil it and run it to the back of the boat then run a regular hose back to the fuel pump.

Mine is a rubber hose all the way back from the tank.  No copper tubing, has a threaded and barbed fitting at the tank that the hose slips on to with a hose clamp.

Same with mine.
Wait, how did that water get into the foam??????

Did you guys take out the copper line or there just wasn't one. Also to turn the tank so it is fore and aft do i need to split the hull or can you get in there to do it with out.
Did you guys use treated plywood or did you just get regular ply and coat it with resin?

I took out the copper line and replaced it.

I used exterior grade plywood and sealed it with resin.

Shawn, I would avoid splitting the boat if at all possible.  If you plan on putting in a new floor do if before you split the hull and the deck.  On the plywood, almost everyone I asked says just use CDX that's what I use.

Is there a reason that you removed the copper? I figured it would be better to leave it, as the copper wont deteriorate like the hose will. And i haven't really looked under the bow but what all needs to be done to turn the tank. Other than a longer fill hose. Is there anything in the way?

Couldn't tell you about the tank, on the CVZ-18, the tank is under the floor.

I took the copper out because I didn't like corrosion on it & the fuel pickup area, I did leave the copper vent line in.  I'm not super worried about it getting cut or rubbing as I've sandwiched it in pink foam, so there shouldn't be any place for it to rub.

I also left an access opening on mine so I can always inspect & replace if I need to...its not best picture, but you can see it in the floor.

dorelse  In the middle of the upright portion it is 2 pieces. Is there a reason you did it like that? My seat back is one piece.

dorelse  In the middle of the upright portion it is 2 pieces. Is there a reason you did it like that? My seat back is one piece.

Yeah, I'll add I'm likely going to re-work some if it...but...I had 2 months to go from an empty hull (no engine or outdrive in it) to a working usable boat last spring.  Some of it was a product of the mad dash to our weekly vacation up to Park Rapids.

I wanted to add a large retractable tow pylon, without cutting into the engine cover.  We tube with a couple of teenagers, and I already had some stress cracking (when I bought it) on the port side because there's no support if the rear bench is removed.

Added this:

So...I put in some additional bracing so the engine cover wouldn't be stressed.  I'm not really going for 'original original' with Goldie, just original enough, but some changes for the way we use the boat.  That pylon comes extends about 2 1/2 feet out of the hole and locks with a pin.  Works well for tubing, waterskiing, etc...

I'm going to be reworking the seating this spring and that will likely all change and be one solid piece with room for the bow cover to store between the bench and the pylon.

Here's how looks when its extended.  It pulls from the center of the boat more, and honestly, I don't like that little tow ring for pulling tubers.

Actually, most of that is going to be reworked to keep everything flush across the rear bench seat, but I'll still have 4 inches of wood for the tow bar area...but the 'bump out' will be gone.

Very cool. I would do something like that but I have the V184 that I built a wakeboard tower for last year for pulling tube skiers wakeboard. Other wise I think that would be a great Idea.

It also tows boats from the tower as we found out last year on the MN river.

Yeah, you're set.  My CVZ-19 had a really nice tow bar...so I was trying to replicate that:

Shawn

There was no copper in my boat Iam sure because it was a later model they did away with it.  Same with Tims as his is a 86 and mine an 87.

The tanks also came in the for and aft configuration.  Should not have to split the hull to do it.  Might take some time to build a shelf for it to sit on.  Ours are held down by some big hose clamps. But when you make a shelf for the tank I believe that there is some type of support from it to the bow.  Mine is in storage other wise I would look for you.  Maybe Tim could take a pic or mine is at Jasons in Hudson WI.  you could run over there and have a looksee. Would show you how the area above the kick plate is done with the storage doors to the front bow area.

Don't you need to ground the fuel cell if metal to the engine block?  Shawn here is the thread to OleReds website with pictures of the rebuild of the bilge area on my intimidator.  He rebuilt the flotation boxes a little smaller and shorter.  We left spaces for the tilt/trim pump and blower, and put in a slide out battery shelf.  I also put the stereo amp back there on top of one of the floatation boxes.  My bilge are is full but well planned out.

In the small boxes that you put back in did you put a drainage hole in them or seal them up good? I can see an advantage to sealing them. No water gets in but if did then cant get out. Or put small drainage hole in but then water could get in and not dry all the way. Last though would be Condensation on the inside if you sealed them all the way. Hot engine one side cool water under. Thoughts?

Also any extra supports or mods that people have added that are a good idea? Is there a problem with them cracking or stressing anywhere that I should reinforce.   I will only be making small boxes in the back for the battery and trim pump. going to leave the rest open just making a flat bottom in the storage compartment 1 or 2 inches what ever the one side would need to be. I will have removable "walls" to separate the engine compartment and storage.

I bought 2 expandable/removable plugs (like the drain plug) that I put in those 2 drain holes.  Plugged when I want, open when I want...

I anchored my battery to the floor directly, and then built a small platform for the trim pump.

Mock up of pump mount...I wanted air to flow around it...its fiberglassed in & sealed now.

Going to go get some wood and start the rebuild of the storage area and seats tonight. I never heard from anyone but is there any extra reinforcing that should be done anywhere?

I personally don't have an answer on the reinforcements. I put the flotation boxes back in my cvx18 and plan on the same for my Intimidator.

Jeff put in removable walls...pretty sure and doug took out the floatation boxes and used plywood to reinforce that area.

I cut into the corner floatation boxes and took out all the foam just to make sure there was no moisture or water. Plan to fiberglass back the cut out wall pieces, fill both corners with new foam (Ole Red says "Great Stuff" is okay), and paint the corner boxes and inside of the transom.

My boxes were already separating from the hull.  You've seen my reinforcement already.  I have no plans to put the boxes back in.

fill both corners with new foam (Ole Red says "Great Stuff" is okay),

I have used the "Great Stuff " for several years, but the last time I went to get some I realized they have come out with several different formula's .. not the same stuff, be sure to get the "Red" can that says it set's up rigid, there other formula's not thats more like insulation, plyable, and the black can for bigger gaps .. I used the formula that sets up rigid, and I don't use the "nozzel" that comes with the can,  I drilled 1/4 holes, stuck the spout on the can right into the 1/4 hole and pushed down, the can is emptied in about 10 seconds that way, I also have just slipped a little boxed end wrench over the spout on the can, pulled down on the wrench, kinda like a trigger, and shoot that stuff several feet up into area's I couldnt reach.
The "Geat Stuff" will set up under water, it forms a "skin" over itself that water will not penetrate, but once that "skin" is broken, and submerged, it may absorb water, I don't know that for sure, but most foams will soak up water eventually, I make a lot of effort to keep water out of area's I fill with foam.

I use another kind of foam now, it called "Secure Set"  it's made here in Edmond Ok, designed to set telephone poles, fence post and flag poles, absolutely water proof, and begins expansion in a minute.  two part formula, 50/50 mix for about 30 seconds, pour it in where ya want it, it expands 13 times it's voulmn in just a few minutes.  The Secure Set foam sets up so rigid you can hardly break it with a hammer.

I do not think Resin/cloth/mat etc will adhere to Green treat.......we tested once .....put some on a peice of green when we went home (done right) the next morning we were able to peel it off..........we have never used green treat during repair.

I made one storage area with a flat bottom for cooler or things that would need to stand upright and a shelf to get the trim pump out of the way. The other side just a 15x18in box for the battery.

Looks good Shawn!

I was peeking at Jeff's this weekend. He built in some real nice carpeted storage areas back there too. Similiar to what you have. He's got the battery on the starboard side and the trim pump on the port side. Just make sure you have enough room to pull that trim pump, change lines, add fluid, ect. if you need to.

Is any one else in the MN area building front seats for there CVX. I have the ones that have the rounded back see pick. Any ways I bought a sheet of "Bendy" plywood to do the seat backs with. Found some one that did it with them on the national site. I have a 4x8 sheet and only need a few feet of it so just wondering if any one else would need any of it. Tim?

The oscillating "multi-tool" with the half moon blade makes quick work of that, just make sure you hold it flat (parallel to the surface so it doesn't "dig in"!).   ;)

Shawn

Looks like they have put different base in at some point.

If you look around your present ones there is a series of 8 holes those are for the correct base.

I just located and drilled new ones on s Scotts new floor in his cvx20.  Not sure on the seat height, maybe could measure his for you.

But I do not see any reason why to ones you have will not work.

I think I will prob reuse them. I pulled them up off the floor and I can see the old holes. Everything looks good underneath no rot or damage I think the whole floor could use a new coat of cloth and resin though Just for some extra waterproofing.

Got some more work done this weekend Repaired and strengthened over the out drive. Had to fix someone else's "repair"  Next ground out the mounting holes for the windshield, cleats and grab rails. Many of them were stripped and had over sized screws in them. Next got the hood back to its original shape. I think someone must have walked or layed on it. It was sunken in and lots of cracks. Last speaker mounts glassed in and some blocks glassed in for the side panels I will be installing.

Yes the swoosh with the orange flake as well. I got a few samples of flake. Wont be the exact same but will be close I like the look of one of the flakes samples  better than the original. Might get a few more samples before I decide. Building the round back seats tonight. That "bendy" plywood is neat stuff.

1st pic is the test cards with black, white and orange base colors, one orange is sprayed over black. No clear or flake yet.
2nd pic Card on left side is 2 different color flakes top half and bottom half
3rd you can really see the difference that the base color makes. I will be spraying the orange base down first. One reason it will use alot less flake and 2 you wont see the black or white showing threw the flake.
4th straight on shot of the card. Black/white/orange base color when looking at the pic
The pics don't do it justice looks way better in person.

Put the new interior in to make sure everything fit and then dropped it off to get the upholstery done.(if i didn't do it now prob wouldn't get done until July) I just have a few more spots to finish up for body work then the final sand and Paint. And the new seat bases showed up last night. How tall are everyone else's bases these are about 8in tall they swivel 360 and slide back and fourth.

Lookin' good! Ya I believe 8" base is generally the rule in these things. Those look like nice beefy pedestals btw.

I agree, the fwd'n aft adjustment feature is nice. (There are days when I feel tall and then some when I feel short ...?) Just make sure when you slide the seat back'n swivel it, it don't bang into the gunnal or control.

Nice job so far. Cain't wait to see the finished product.

Carry on.

The question is Can a 32 yr old man crawl up inside the bow of a CVX 18 answer? Yes. But i would not recommend it. I had to get the bow eye out so there are no tape lines around it. Got to looking at it and the wood was pretty bad so out with the old and in with the new. Hoping to paint sometime next week fingers crossed.

Ordered the Flake today from Roth Flake 1Lb of Trippin Agent Orange and 4 Oz of Trippin Glass House. Also ordered my Clear coat form a company called SPI. Sounds like excellent stuff I could not find a single post and any forum or the internet that said anything bad about there products. They were nice to talk to and very helpful in helping me choose their correct clear that will have enough "open time" to apply the flake and will also have enough UV protection when it is done. Hopefully I can paint next week.

I should have the rear seat back from the upholstery shop tomorrow so I can finish up the fit, adjustment, and hidden latches i'm installing on the engine cover.

My advice (its cheap) keep the 4 inch foam in the seat bottom.  Might give the passengers better view and more cushion when you jump some wakes with the boat.  My CSS19 has that much foam in the rear bench bottom.  Can't wait to see the boat in finished form, great project to follow.  TS

4" is too tall for that kinda seat base. 3" medium-firm is what you want for seat bottoms. 2" medium density on the back ...

What kind of mid-coat did you use with the flake?

I didnt use a mid coat. I put down a wet coat of clear and the I had a Flake gun that applied the dry flake into the wet clear. Then a few more coats of clear over it.
Going to try and get the white done this weekend and then 2 or 3 more coats of clear on the whole boat once every thing is sanded flat and there is no orange peel left.

Shawn and Scott, how is White Bear Lake for launching and water depth for boating? My boat is also close to being finished, and I want a safe place to try and get use to a new boat and motor.

If you use the Ramsey county launch it isnt bad. All the rest of the launches on the lake you have to pay for I believe. Back right down the middle of the ramp though. Everyone power loads and all the sand washes up on the sides of the ramp so it is un-level if you are not in the middle. I would recommend looking at a lake map just so you have an idea of the shallow areas. Most are marked pretty good. or just go more to the east side of the lake it is a little deeper and not much to worry about over there. Also just so you know the lake has a year around speed limit of 35mph. Boat, Jet-ski, snowmobile, car don't matter. I have not been out since we got all the rain prob came up a little.

I might try to make a trial run on Thurs or Fri night. Got the trim pump all wired back up and all the old wiring fixed (i Think) I will keep everyone posted, but Sat sounds good to me for some cruising. I could bring my grill out or we could go to one of the bars and get something to eat. Wife said the water wasn't bad temp wise. She was down in the water with my daughter on Mon.

Picks of trim pump all wired, and pic of the new trim switch on the steering wheel. Last pic radio mounted in storage area. In the steering wheel pic you can see the wired remote controls for the radio.

Like Shawn said, the water level isn't much of an issue; lake is about where it was last year and the shallow spots are well marked.  The southwest side of the lake is the most shallow (and that happens to be where our dock is, of course).  The dreaded "prop buster" rock shelf is above water now by the launch, so no risk of hitting that unless you want to :-)  And when taking boats out, definitely stay in the center of the ramp as both sides angle toward the center.  Let me know if people are heading out here and I can meet you by the launch or wherever, can't wait to see the boats!

You can get them to look like a piece of chrome if you rub long enough. But they will require periodic maintenance to keep them looking good as the anodizing is now gone.

Don't forget the new rubber insert to finish it off. Money well spent IMHO.

Correct, but the good news is now that the anode's gone you can use Mothers Polish, Nevr Dull, etc on em.

Agent Orange has a real negative meaning to anyone who served in Vietnam.  Find something different. Pick something that rhymes with Orange.

Oh for cripes sake Jerry. What, didya get some on ya? Not everybody did. Is that what makes you such an ornery cantankerous sob?

"Agent" = 007   "Orange" = The beautiful flake     The name is PERFECT!

Something that ryhmes with "orange" is a toughie ...

Keep em comin!!  I am thinking Agent Orange sounds pretty good.

On a side note had it out on White Bear again and got 51.7 MPH out of her. With me my wife and my daughter in it. Lake was way smoother today.

My two uncles and a cousin here with me were all in Vietnam and they all thought it was a cool name.

How about following the trend in our country today where even food has the name in Spanish?

"Agente Naranja"

Now that looks cool.

Here in FL we have a lil concoction called a 'Orange Whip'. Mentioned in "the Blues Brothers" movie. May or may not contain alchohol, 'pending on what county yer in ...

Agent Orange is an awesome name. Got the most votes so far? Don't worry Jerry'll get over it once he figgers out what it means.

Btw every American should visit the Viet Nam Veterans Memorial. aka "The Wall". Arlington too. I guarantee that'd be an experience they wouldn't soon forget. I made it through Arlington okay, the wall was purty tough. Kept tryin to but couldn't manage to get any closer than 'bout 10-15 feet before breaking into tears. The "Aura" round these places will blow you away

Peace

edit. Latigo Naranja rolls of the tongue easier ...

Bring them down if you have room.   Just not sure.

I will bring them to Redwing. I also have 10 new chrome lug nuts that will go with them came in a pack of 20.
Scott we could try to widen the hole in them and see if that would work if i remember they were close to fitting.

My wife asked me what I was so intently looking at on the computer for the last hour +.....my answer "I'm looking at *Censored*"....she promptly came over to look only to find me drooling at the most beautiful thing I have ever seen....YOUR BOAT!! I am in awe!

I am a new member here but a long time member over at CGOA.com. Grew up with a CVX16 and have had a CV16SS and C500 Metric over the past 10 years. Just purchased and will be picking up my latest rescue, a 1980 CVZ18. As you can see, she needed a new home and a great deal of TLC.

She needs a full restoration but will be beautiful again! Stumbling on this thread finalized the decision to change the color of this one to Orange/White w/ Blue accents (Florida Gator here). I am hoping you would be ok with me touching base with you on the phone number listed on your site so I could chat with you for a few minutes about some of the things you did on yours. I am planning on doing all the work myself. My wife's uncle has a small body shop so once I get the big stuff completed, I can haul it up to his place and spray it.

Again, beautiful work! You have one of the most outstanding CVX18's I have ever seen.

Shawn, thanks so much for taking the better part of an hour to answer all my questions. Perfect example why this is such a great group to be a part of. I'm sure I'll bug you again. I wish I had my notes from our conversation, stuck in the emergency room with my daughter. Remember I told you the faster the better? She apparently pushed the limts of the neighbors swing and think she broke her wrist!! Thanks again, appreciate it.

That is an awesome looking paint job!

A few of questions from a novice painter.

Did you us a primer or did you just shoot the BC on top of the gelcoat?

Assuming the boat was painted in the garage, did you do anything to control the fumes? How about dust and such?

If you ever decide to sell this boat send me a PM.

Thanks, Jim

Gregg's not lyin' .... that orange flake is phenomenal.  If you think it looks good in pictures, they communicate only a fraction of the cool factor you see in person.  It's a boat that everyone has to reach out and touch.

I did use primer on the boat before painting. The orange basecoat from house of Kolor first, then the flake, then clear coat. after it dried the sanded the clear flat and smooth and 3 more coats of clear.

As for fumes I had a couple Box fans in a window. Before I paint I always clean really good, blow off everything with an air blower, sweep again, wet the floor down, wipe down & prep the part being painted.  No mater where you paint you will get a few dust nibs in the paint they can just be buffed out later.

As for sale of boat I may consider it after I get the 23 done that I am restoring.

That's the story of my life. Day late and a dollar(usually a lot of dollars) short.

I bet it does look good. It would look even better down here in GA where it can be used year 'round.  :D

It would look awesome being pulled behind my '70 GoManGo Challenger T/A(which I sold a couple years ago).

If I were you I'd sell the orange boat to me and go all in on the 23.  ;D

That is a beautiful boat. I think I'll paint my Macsemiser the same color just to get some practice and a metal flake fix.  8)

Bump from the dead...

A couple more questions, did you need a flex additive in the paint?

Would you recommend paint instead of gelcoat on a refinish?

How did you lay the "swoosh" back out to mask off for the white paint(It appears you painted over orange/flake when you painted the stripe, swoosh and white band around the deck)?

I stealing you color theme for my CVX20 if you don't mind. Your boat is still my all time favorite.
