CVX 18 Paint and interior restore
« on: March 04, 2012, 07:33:26 PM »
Figured I would start a new thread with pics of the boat as I go. I will caution, as I am not good at remembering to take pics. I will try to remember. The first few pics are in the "CVX 18 On my way to look at it" thread.  First pics is the water that was coming out of the foam. There was a lot still frozen after 2 day in 70 degree garage. 2nd pics is the spray foam that someone had put in when they "repaired" the battery box what a pain that was to get out. 3rd float boxes all gone. and last pic, Jeff how did you run the fuel line on yours? Thinking that I could just uncoil it and run it to the back of the boat then run a regular hose back to the fuel pump.

Mine is a rubber hose all the way back from the tank.  No copper tubing, has a threaded and barbed fitting at the tank that the hose slips on to with a hose clamp.

Did you guys take out the copper line or there just wasn't one. Also to turn the tank so it is fore and aft do i need to split the hull or can you get in there to do it with out.
Did you guys use treated plywood or did you just get regular ply and coat it with resin?
I think this has become an addiction.

I took out the copper line and replaced it.

I used exterior grade plywood and sealed it with resin.

Shawn, I would avoid splitting the boat if at all possible.  If you plan on putting in a new floor do if before you split the hull and the deck.  On the plywood, almost everyone I asked says just use CDX that's what I use.

Is there a reason that you removed the copper? I figured it would be better to leave it, as the copper wont deteriorate like the hose will. And i haven't really looked under the bow but what all needs to be done to turn the tank. Other than a longer fill hose. Is there anything in the way?

Couldn't tell you about the tank, on the CVZ-18, the tank is under the floor.

I took the copper out because I didn't like corrosion on it & the fuel pickup area, I did leave the copper vent line in.  I'm not super worried about it getting cut or rubbing as I've sandwiched it in pink foam, so there shouldn't be any place for it to rub.

I also left an access opening on mine so I can always inspect & replace if I need to...its not best picture, but you can see it in the floor.

dorelse  In the middle of the upright portion it is 2 pieces. Is there a reason you did it like that? My seat back is one piece.

Yeah, I'll add I'm likely going to re-work some if it...but...I had 2 months to go from an empty hull (no engine or outdrive in it) to a working usable boat last spring.  Some of it was a product of the mad dash to our weekly vacation up to Park Rapids.

I wanted to add a large retractable tow pylon, without cutting into the engine cover.  We tube with a couple of teenagers, and I already had some stress cracking (when I bought it) on the port side because there's no support if the rear bench is removed.

Added this:

So...I put in some additional bracing so the engine cover wouldn't be stressed.  I'm not really going for 'original original' with Goldie, just original enough, but some changes for the way we use the boat.  That pylon comes extends about 2 1/2 feet out of the hole and locks with a pin.  Works well for tubing, waterskiing, etc...

I'm going to be reworking the seating this spring and that will likely all change and be one solid piece with room for the bow cover to store between the bench and the pylon.

Here's how looks when its extended.  It pulls from the center of the boat more, and honestly, I don't like that little tow ring for pulling tubers.

Actually, most of that is going to be reworked to keep everything flush across the rear bench seat, but I'll still have 4 inches of wood for the tow bar area...but the 'bump out' will be gone.

Very cool. I would do something like that but I have the V184 that I built a wakeboard tower for last year for pulling tube skiers wakeboard. Other wise I think that would be a great Idea.

It also tows boats from the tower as we found out last year on the MN river.

Yeah, you're set.  My CVZ-19 had a really nice tow bar...so I was trying to replicate that:

Shawn

There was no copper in my boat Iam sure because it was a later model they did away with it.  Same with Tims as his is a 86 and mine an 87.

The tanks also came in the for and aft configuration.  Should not have to split the hull to do it.  Might take some time to build a shelf for it to sit on.  Ours are held down by some big hose clamps. But when you make a shelf for the tank I believe that there is some type of support from it to the bow.  Mine is in storage other wise I would look for you.  Maybe Tim could take a pic or mine is at Jasons in Hudson WI.  you could run over there and have a looksee. Would show you how the area above the kick plate is done with the storage doors to the front bow area.

Don't you need to ground the fuel cell if metal to the engine block?  Shawn here is the thread to OleReds website with pictures of the rebuild of the bilge area on my intimidator.  He rebuilt the flotation boxes a little smaller and shorter.  We left spaces for the tilt/trim pump and blower, and put in a slide out battery shelf.  I also put the stereo amp back there on top of one of the floatation boxes.  My bilge are is full but well planned out.

In the small boxes that you put back in did you put a drainage hole in them or seal them up good? I can see an advantage to sealing them. No water gets in but if did then cant get out. Or put small drainage hole in but then water could get in and not dry all the way. Last though would be Condensation on the inside if you sealed them all the way. Hot engine one side cool water under. Thoughts?

Also any extra supports or mods that people have added that are a good idea? Is there a problem with them cracking or stressing anywhere that I should reinforce.   I will only be making small boxes in the back for the battery and trim pump. going to leave the rest open just making a flat bottom in the storage compartment 1 or 2 inches what ever the one side would need to be. I will have removable "walls" to separate the engine compartment and storage.
I think this has become an addiction.

I bought 2 expandable/removable plugs (like the drain plug) that I put in those 2 drain holes.  Plugged when I want, open when I want...

I anchored my battery to the floor directly, and then built a small platform for the trim pump.

Mock up of pump mount...I wanted air to flow around it...its fiberglassed in & sealed now.

Battery box mounted towards center, forward of the engine:

With out putting the full boxes back in do I need to worry about bracing the hull or anything else?

Going to go get some wood and start the rebuild of the storage area and seats tonight. I never heard from anyone but is there any extra reinforcing that should be done anywhere?
