Steering Rack and Outdrive Questions - 79 CVX16SS
« on: May 04, 2020, 12:09:23 PM »
All - So besides the floor needing care down the road, Ive gone through almost everything on this boat with the exception of the steering rack and the outdrive. I though that since the motor has been rebuilt, it may be smart to go ahead and rebuild the out drive. It works fine, the oil is clean but I know its got some seasons on it and I don't know the condition (I did replace the steering pin and gimbal ring). What would something like this run? Or could I tackle myself? What tools are must haves? Or should I put a alpha 1 on it from SE and call it a day? That would bolt up to the helmet and go into the coupler?

For the steering rack, it of course a little sloppy, but till do ok I guess. But it feels like the bushing or bearing at the rack end is moving left and right. Are these serviceable? I have heard of teleflex? This is a Morse. Seems pretty straight forward to replace. Also at the engine end, the link from the pin to the end of the cable is sloppy at the cable. Should I open up and add a bushing or is there a bushing that I can buy? Or would new cable cure this? Or just tell me "you will never get the slop out of the steering"...

Can't answer your questions about drive .. But Teleflex has cable you need. Think they go by "Seastar Solutions" now ..

Outdrive leg service and rebuild is not a terrible task, but does require several specialty tools.   Just my opinion, but I would keep good lube in your drive, change impellor at least every two years and run it till it dies.  The 4 cyl Mills are not too tough on them, they last well.    Another option to consider would be to keep an eye out for one to do a full rebuild on, no sense in having your boat down during season.

I agree with what Mike said on the drive, as far as the steering goes, replacing the helm/cable will probably make the biggest difference in the slop. On the link, of the handful of boats have scrapped out, and the few that I’ve put back together I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on a MerCruiser worn bad enough that I wouldn’t use it. Maybe there is supposed to be a bushing in it and it got lost?

Ill get under there and see. It seems the splines just cone out the end and there is a bearing assembly. If someone had just the steering bearing and splined shaft (that the wheel goes onto) for a morse rack, that would cure my issues.

How long does my cable need to be on the 16 I/O??

I see that there is a helm control, but would it bolt onto my existing rack I wonder?

Should be in the parts number, printed on one end of cable.
Seastar Solutions / West Marine / Overton Marine have a "How to" for measuring cable length on there web site.

Will a new helm/rack bolt right up to the existing mounts on the hull?

I've done a few on outboards, but never on a I/O.
I think everything is standard
Maybe someone with a I/O can help.

At the stern they all mount the same, cable screws on to the tube on the transom plate.
the helm varies some, most helms attach to a plate (like in pix) with 2 or 3 bolts and the plate bolts to the dash. they seem to vary, some have 3, some have 4 bolts. it all gets covered up by the bezel so re-drilling is no that big of a deal. the plates are available in different angles, and tilt is available as well. if ya really want to go "all out" you can get hydraulic systems from sea star for an IO as well, but that's prob overkill.

I have seen some wear slop in the R/P unit at the helm, but more often it's in the stern connections.  With a helper you can see at what connection it is bad at.   Maybe just a bit in several joints.  I had to re-bush the arm on my 16ss, and make up a new pivot bolt.  Still had some slop at the helm, but that corrected the bulk of the issue.

My arm in the transom at the end of the cable has slop and the shaft in the helm.

Show me a picture of the bush?

Sorry, but I sold my 16ss several years ago, looked around but could not find a specific photo of the arm
What I did basically was drilling out the arm, pressing in a
bronze bushing, then using a 3/8" bolt with enough shank to create a bearing surface for the cable end.  Single not a washers set the cable end play, then another that allows the bolt to tighten on the arm.   I can draw a picture if it helps,

So I ordered a helm and rack online and will get next week. Any tips for installing? Attach a string to the cable and pull out from the helm end?
